EPPiC Broadcast
01/19/21 • 36 min
Child welfare and family services claim to act in the best interest of children, but far too often government agencies punish innocent parents and rip apart low-income and minority families.
What would a child welfare system look like that supports parents and keeps families together?
This week, Michael talks with Joyce McMillan, Founder of JMAC for Families and the PLAN Coalition. Joyce is a deeply respected NYC activist for families, and she has been there herself. Joyce tells us about her work defending families in New York, how the system is failing parents and children, and what a better model of child welfare might look like.
See more of Joyce’s work at her new website, jmacforfamilies.com.

Considering All Options with Vivek Sankaran
EPPiC Broadcast
09/17/24 • 30 min
This week’s guest is Vivek Sankaran, a professor of law at the Michigan University School of Law and Director of their Child Advocacy Law Clinic. Vivek recently argued two cases in front of the Michigan Supreme Court, which highlight the harms of permanently terminating parental rights without considering other ways to preserve the parent-child relationship. Vivek argues that if a child is in a secure situation, and is benefitting from their parental and familial relationships, courts should not immediately assume that taking away the parent’s right to be in the child’s life is in the child’s best interest.
