Are older Americans receiving cancer screenings they may not need? | Engage Episode 4

Engage

You probably know about the importance of cancer screening, but did you know that some people might be receiving cancer screenings unnecessarily? In this episode, Dr. Jennifer Moss discusses her research into the cancer screening rates of older Americans.

The U.S. Preventative Services Task Force publishes recommendations for medical tests, including cancer screenings. These recommendations include things like age and other health conditions. People who receive tests outside the recommendations may not need to be screened, a situation called overscreening. Dr. Moss recently reported results of a research study looking at cancer screenings by analyzing a National Center for Disease Control database.

Engage is a podcast of Penn State Clinical and Translational Science Institute. In each episode, you will learn about the research process and how Penn State is helping to improve the health of our neighbors and communities.

Research Ethics | Engage Episode 5

How research is conducted is an important topic. Scientists must balance several principles when conducting research with humans. According to the National Institutes of Health, these principles include scientific validity, independent review of the research, and making sure that participants are properly informed before participating. Answers to the scientist’s research question should contribute to the understanding of health or improve how we prevent or treat medical conditions. The exposure of research participants to the risk and burden of the research process must be justified.

Research ethics can help scientists balance these needs, which can be at times competing interests. Research ethicists like Dr. Jen McCormick with Penn State Clinical and Translational Science Institute study these issues.
