Dr. Nijay Gupta joins Paige Clingenpeel on this week’s episode of Embracing Your Season. Dr. Gupta is a successful author and academic writer and serves as a Professor of New Testament at Northern Seminary. Paige and Dr. Gupta discuss growing up in the church and his book, Tell Her Story , which addresses how women led and ministered in the early church. This podcast is packed with amazing knowledge that is easy to understand.

Takeaways:

  1. Dig deeper into the Bible - There are opportunities where you can grasp the word of God and its truth, while recognizing that certain directives or prohibitions were specific to their historical context. They may not universally apply to what God desires for us in our roles, leadership, and relationships.
  2. Ask questions - Why do we believe what we believe? It leads us to a place where we learn things. It directs our steps in a way that makes us open to hearing different perspectives. It leads to more truth and understanding in the way God has intended.
  3. Have conversations - Keep the dialogue open even when you disagree. Learn to listen with a desire to understand and respect each other's opinions.

Are you a parent of a special needs child? Do you struggle with finding community and connection? On this week’s episode of Embracing Your Season, host Paige Clingenpeel has Julie Hornok on the show. Julie is the co-founder of Labeled and Loved which is a non-profit organization that is passionate about empowering women to find grace, acceptance and strength in the midst of even the toughest circumstances life has to offer. Humbled by parenting kids with extra needs, she works to build community for those who feel alone and spread her message of hope to anyone who will listen.

Paige’s Takeaways:

  1. We can focus on what our kids can do. Flip the script and walk through the positives of their day to day so we also have that mindshift. If we focus on the negatives just think about how discouraging that can be to us as parents but also to our children. We can still grieve the things that they can’t do.
  2. Stop caring about what other parents think. Don’t focus on the opinions of others around you, instead focus on what is best for your own child at that moment.
  3. Find Community. We cannot be doing this alone. IT doesn’t matter if you have special needs kids or able-bodied kids. We can allow other trusted people to speak into our kids' lives. Be intentional about who we are allowing into our lives and our kids lives.

Did you know that your diet could be related to mental health issues like anxiety and depression? On this week’s episode of Embracing Your Season, host Paige Clingenpeel discusses several takeaways about diet and how that correlates with anxiety, depression and other mental health issues. We need to be mindful of what we are putting in our bodies and how it is affecting our everyday health.

Takeaways:

  1. Stimulants - Caffeine, soda, energy drinks, coffee and some teas are examples of stimulants that can affect our bodies in negative ways.
  2. Make a food diary - What are we eating and drinking that can have a negative impact and correlate with anxiety symptoms?
  3. Sugar - How much processed sugar are we consuming? Sugar hits the same part of our brain as the pleasure center.
  4. Food allergies - They can cause headaches, inflammation and impact your body in negative ways. The majority of the “feel good” chemicals come from your gut so if you are feeling awful, it might be that you need to heal your gut.
  5. Water - It’s a natural purifier. Some anxiety symptoms come from lack of hydration.
  6. Vitamins and minerals - What fruits, vegetables and proteins are you eating? The food diary can help with this in order to keep track of what vitamins and supplements your body might not be getting so you can add them into your routine.
  7. Sleep - Lack of sleep can increase mental health issues like depression, anxiety, irritability, and conflict resolution skills. Sleep helps heal our bodies and restore it.

Clinton Faupel, Co-Founder and Executive Director of RemedyLIVE is joining Paige Clingenpeel on this week's episode of Embracing Your Season. RemedyLIVE is a technology and faith based, non-profit that produces interactive events for people ages 13+ that are struggling with mental health issues. Clinton shares a wealth of knowledge in having those hard conversations with our teen’s about their secret struggles with anxiety, depression and suicidal thoughts. Sometimes all it takes is someone to listen.

Paige’s Takeaways:

  1. Don’t live in isolation. When we stay in isolation it increases the lies that we believe exponentially. When we are alone it is harder to fight our struggles by ourselves. RemedyLIVE is a great resource for us all to use to address mental health struggles and find community.
  2. We need to practice active listening. Just listening is one of the best predictors of health in your relationships with your child, teen, and even with your spouse. Sit side by side with your child and just listen. Active listening can increase the success of your connection with your child. Recognize whether your child is in a war or peace time. This is helpful for navigating feelings and offering solutions that will be heard by your child.
  3. Make a commitment to get off your phone and be present with your family. Be intentional with the time we have been given with our kids and love them well.

On this week's episode of Embracing Your Season host Paige Clingenpeel has special guest and personal friend, Whitney Bandemer on the show to address being vulnerable, asserting your needs and figuring out how to find trusted people to help you make the best and wisest decisions in life. Whitney is a wife and mother as well as a former attorney, an organizational architect, experienced people leader and owner of WB Consulting LLC.

Paige’s Takeaways:

  1. We should have a multitude of counselors in our lives in order to make decisions and have a community that can help us be healthy and whole. A multitude of counselors is important because we have blind spots. We have biases that we bring into our day to day lives as well as bigger decisions we have to make. We need trusted people in our lives who have discernment. We also need to choose wisely who we allow to speak into our lives.
  2. We have to be open and honest about what we need from the people in our lives or in our relationships. Communicating like this can help our relationships across the board. Help them understand what their role is in the conversation.
  3. How can we implement some of these things for our kids now? How can we help them grow in their vulnerability or grow in their needs? We need to be modeling this well and share our emotions appropriately so they can see what emotions look like. When they see that we can be vulnerable and share deep and hard emotions, they can learn from that. Teach them who they can trust. Helping them from a young age, identify what makes a trusted friend, a trusted adult, someone they can walk alongside with in life because they aren’t always going to come to us.

On this week's episode of Embracing Your Season, host Paige Clingenpeel has a great chat with her good friend, Tiffany Gardner. Together they discuss navigating the holidays and setting boundaries. There is fun in family gatherings but there can also be high stress and triggers. We can often have different perspectives and expectations when it comes to setting boundaries which can either result in the holidays being a beautiful reunion or a perfect storm.

Takeaways:

  1. Getting to know your child in all ages as they develop and grow into an independent adult. As parents, we want to celebrate their individuality but our rules will change and adapt with all the growth as well.
  2. Boundaries are healthy and important! Explore what are healthy boundaries in your relationships in general and your marriage.Talk to trusted people, therapists, mentors and advisors that can speak into setting healthy boundaries in your life. Plan how to implement those boundaries in a kind, loving but firm way.
  3. Choosing the right timing to communicate those boundaries. Don’t discuss it during Thanksgiving dinner. Maybe write it out beforehand and be very intentional about the timing.
  4. What if someone is coming to you to establish and communicate a boundary? It can hurt a little bit to have this conversation that is being brought to you. Be mindful that this person wants a relationship with you. Honor them by listening, asking questions for clarity and receive it in humility reminding ourselves that we value them to respect the boundary.

How can we as parents, step-parents, caregivers, leaders, and mentors, be a safe place for our kids to be able to talk to us about their biggest questions? On this week's episode of Embracing Your Season, host Paige Clingenpeel interviews Kara Powell, PHD as they discuss her book, 3 Big Questions That Change Every Teenager. Kara is the chief of leadership formation and executive director of the Fuller Youth Institute at Fuller Theological Seminary and provides a wealth of knowledge when it comes to changing the narrative with our youth today.

Three Takeaways:

  1. Every behavior that our child has is rooted in what they are hungry for. Help them identify what is wrong, what they are striving to achieve and walk alongside them to answer questions.
  2. A lot of the things that are identified in our children are from external perspectives or influences. Helping our kids know and understand that ultimately our identity is in the creator, know who He is and who we are in Him.
  3. Their journey will look different than yours. Stop dictating to our kids what they need to believe, what their relationship is like with Jesus. Instead ask questions and open up dialogue with them to understand where they are at.

The increase of anger and conflict is growing in this day and age and virtually everything is being recorded and uploaded to social media. Listen as they keep it real and share their life stories and actions at their kids' sporting events.

Takeaways:

Tips for Parent Anger at Sporting Event:

  1. Have a conversation with yourself about your values and what matters the most. These questions set the expectations for our behavior. Represent your family and Jesus by being calm and respectful in difficult moments where it is easy to show frustration and anger.
  2. Recognize and know what triggers you or sets you off. Be mindful of your environment, take deep breaths, and communicate to your spouse or friends that you need a break, a walk, etc.
  3. Address the thoughts you are having before speaking them. Our kids are watching us and we need to be good examples to them and those around us by practicing self-control.
  4. Pray it out! Prayer can change things so be mindful by letting Jesus into our experiences.

Helping Kids Process Emotions in Sports:

  1. The way they are coached has an impact on how they react or respond to disappointments.
  2. Learn to be teachable and grow, especially when making mistakes or feeling like they have failed.
  3. There’s a sense of injustice sometimes in sports. Build resilience in experiencing injustice because these things happen in life.
  4. Believe the best in everyone.

Paige’s Positivity:

  1. My own worth is not equated by my performance.
  2. Building a community of people who are like-minded can make a huge difference in your life.
