Creating A Climate Positive Economy – Aimee Christensen, CEO, Christensen Global & Founder/CEO, Sun Valley Forum
Electric Ladies Podcast
06/22/23 • 54 min
“What I'm hearing is, how do we go faster? How do we transform the key industries that are driving emissions now? And, that can be the solutions to our climate crisis, to our biodiversity crisis. They're really seeking what are the strategies, where should they be going strategically to shift capital, to shift their operations?...I'm seeing is a great eagerness to learn to act, uh, far ahead of the global targets by governments. So working with companies, working with, uh, local and regional and state governments, um, working with innovators to large corporates. Uh, what I'm hearing is how do we go faster and how do we do it in a way that is truly credible?”
Aimee Christensen on Electric Ladies Podcast
Climate change affects the entire economy – every sector – and therefore, any solution requires a multi-sector, multidimensional approach. But how do those work exactly in real life? What’s working?
Aimee Christensen, CEO of Christensen Global and Founder/CEO of the Sun Valley Forum, has been collaborating with top leaders across sectors in this work every day for 30 years, making the hard choices, running the numbers, identifying financial products and metrics.
Listen to Aimee on Electric Ladies Podcast help us make sense of these strategies in this enlightening interview with host Joan Michelson.
You’ll hear:
- How to build successful public-private partnerships.
- How to align financial assets with growing a climate positive economy.
- What impact new federal funding, ESG reporting and climate disclosure rules will have.
- What corporates are doing to transition to net zero operations and why.
- Plus, insightful career advice, such as...
“Something that I've tried to do in my career that's been important has been to trust my gut and to be a truth teller....People are looking for community, so even if you think you might be the only one who's raising this issue,...you will find your people. And if you don't speak your truth, if you don't ask the hard question, you won't find the people who are looking to align with that aggressive leadership and trust your gut on that. So trust your gut, whether it's about a new job, about a direction we need to be going in, even if it feels a little bit lonely, because... You'll be proven. People will find you and want to collaborate with you.” Aimee Christensen on Electric Ladies Podcast

The Power Of Buildings – Katie McGinty, Johnson Controls Chief Sustainability Officer
Electric Ladies Podcast
02/13/24 • 43 min
“The march that we have seen in businesses taking on climate commitments has been one of those forcing functions to bring the data related to buildings front and center (because buildings account for 40% of greenhouse gas emissions) ....There is a whole heck of a lot of inefficiency to cut out of those buildings. And so, as we think of the enormity of the climate challenge, buildings are that rare space that actually taking action cash flows is accretive to your bottom line because you're cutting out a whole lot of waste that otherwise there's just a burden on your bottom line.” Katie McGinty on Electric Ladies Podcast
Buildings are 40% of greenhouse gas emissions, so they are paramount to addressing the climate challenge. But how? It’s complicated. Buildings are complex ecosystems with tons of regulations to meet because of how central they are to our well-being and safety.
Listen to Katie McGinty, Chief Sustainability Officer of Johnson Controls in this fascinating conversation with Electric Ladies podcast host Joan Michelson. Johnson Controls has played a central role managing our workplace environments for over 140 years.
You’ll hear:
- The impact of covid on buildings and how that has affected carbon management programs.
- How buildings are managed and equipped to improve their performance and reduce costs, including by integrating various systems that were previously isolated.
- How the centrality of the workplace in retaining top talent has affected building infrastructures as much as climate commitments have.
- The impact of the Infrastructure Investment Act and Inflation Reduction Act
- Plus, insightful career advice ....
“At the end of the day, what matters is relationships. And if you have a choice to produce a good, even if not immaculate PowerPoint or presentation, whatever it is...take a risk of walking it around to a couple of people and say, ‘I'd really love your feedback on this.’ Take the time and maybe get out of your comfort zone to build those relationships. The other thing (is)... amplify... Make it a point of saying, ‘Sue just said X, Sue, I actually thought that was pretty interesting. Could you say a few more words about that?’... I think we can help our colleagues come into the game if we reinforce the foot they have put forward and we open the door for them to be able to express themselves more fully.” Katie McGinty on Electric Ladies podcast

“Seek First To Understand” – Jennifer Hough, Author, TEDx Speaker & Advisor on Talking About Climate Change
Electric Ladies Podcast
10/08/24 • 76 min
“If you want to get something done in this world that transcends what's already happening, if you want to be a pioneer or a leader and make something new out of what has been...then you have to be willing to listen to the people that are trying to hold dearly to how it has been and who are afraid of how it has been going away. And one has to become a master bridge builder. In order to become a master bridge builder, one has to be so committed to asking questions to drop into a place of understanding such that you understand where the commonality is....Find the common points.”
Jennifer Hough on Electric Ladies Podcast
Historically devastating hurricanes are wiping communities off the map, courtesy of climate change, and historic private sector and government investments show that clean energy and climate resilience technologies are economic engines. Yet there are still climate deniers and those battling to reverse those investment – even as they praise the jobs created by those investments in their areas. How do we bridge the gap?
Listen to Jennifer Hough, author of “Unstuck,” TEDx speaker and advisor to leaders, explain how to listen differently and talk about these issues differently in this enlightening conversation with Electric Ladies host Joan Michelson. They also share insightful career advice.
You’ll hear about:
- How to listen differently to the climate deniers and others afraid of (any) change.
- What “cognitive dissonance” is and how to transform it.
- How to talk about climate change in a way that builds bridges.
- How to incentivize people to see solutions differently.
- Plus, insightful career advice, such as...
“The first piece of advice that I would give is that...(you want to ask yourself or the Universe) ‘What's the greatest thing that you can do with the skill sets you already have that might leave you feeling satisfied, fulfilled, and like you had a life of meaning and that you went to bed that night knowing that you did what you came to the planet for and you woke up in the morning excited about getting up?’ Answering that question sometimes takes six months, two weeks. It, it's not something that most people can answer right off the bat. They can answer it sometimes generally, but not specifically. So that would be number one....The second thing is, in order for your glass ceilings to become your floors,...you want to work with someone consistently that's guiding you, 'cause doing it alone is for the birds,....finding someone to work with, man, that's so important.” Jennifer Hough on Electric Ladies Podcast

Climate Philanthropy - Heather Grady, Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors
Electric Ladies Podcast
12/12/23 • 46 min
“Philanthropy generally, we consider, contributing private money for public good or community good. And climate philanthropy is simply, when we are making those private contributions in ways that are going to address the climate crisis that our country and that the world is facing today. I would expand that slightly by saying that one of the trends that I'm seeing is a real interlinking of climate and nature problems and climate and nature solutions.”
Heather Grady on Electric Ladies Podcast
Philanthropy is being reinvented today, including what is now called “climate philanthropy.” It’s in part about considering the solutions nature can provide to the climate crisis, instead of just relying on new technologies. They each have a singular purpose as well as a role in the bigger vision, and require accountability
Listen to Heather Grady, Vice President and Practice Lead for Environment and Climate at Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors, explain how they are leveraging philanthropy to help avert climate catastrophes in this fascinating conversation with Electric Ladies podcast host Joan Michelson.
You’ll hear:
- What climate philanthropy is and how it works – and how they view “risk.”
- How they are leveraging the new federal funding, including the Inflation Reduction Act.
- What they think of the oil companies, ESG (environment, social, governance) and other hot topics.
- Which areas Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors focuses on and why
- Plus, insightful career advice ....
“When women are clear that they do want to make a difference, that they want a job with purpose, that's a good thing to put in your cover letter and express on your cv. There are people who haven't worked on mission-driven organizations or companies yet. But if you've spent time, say, doing a lot of volunteer work in your community, whether it's climate or children's rights or whatever it may be, make sure that you're emphasizing that when you're applying for positions. We are really looking in my organization, and I see this increasingly, people are looking for new employees who are values-aligned and values aware.”

Hire The Outliers – Joan on Lesley Michaels Show, “Women We Should Know”
Electric Ladies Podcast
07/11/23 • 25 min
“72% of CEOs say that innovation is one of their top three priorities. And close to 70% of them say they have a hard time driving innovation in their organization. I would posit, having been in there and been an intrapreneur myself, that the problem is they hire the wrong people. They hire for what I call mediocrity, they hire based on fit. And they hire based on past experience doing exactly what they want that person to do. And that's not where you get innovation. Innovation comes from connecting different dots and connecting dots differently.” Joan Michelson on Lesley Michaels show “Women We Should Know”
This week’s episode is a tribute to a brilliant woman who shined the spotlight on “Women We Should Know” with her podcast of that name, and by helping them publish important books. Lesley passed away unexpectedly recently, and we honor her life by airing her interview with our host, Joan Michelson on Lesley’s Show.
Lesley Michaels climbed the corporate ladder in the male-dominated oil and gas industry, and then channeled her frustration with how women didn’t help other women at the time, into a crusade to lift up other women. Last year, she published her own book, “On the Shoulders of Mighty Women: A Modern Feminist's Guide to an Equitable, Diverse World.”
Listen to Lesley interview Joan and you’ll hear Lesley’s magical gift for supporting women – and her own insights as well as Joan’s.
You’ll hear:
- Why and how to hire creative, innovative people.
- Why women are natural innovators
- Joan’s stories of driving innovation in Corporate America
- Lesley’s insightful questions
- Plus, insightful career advice, such as...
“You're going to change direction like four times in your career. Maybe eight, maybe 12... I've worked in different industries. So when you have a functional skill, you can be in different industries. And you will grow, you will evolve. You'll reach a point where it's like, okay, so been there, done that. I want to do something else now. That's okay. Be in tune with that and understand that. As one of my guests said on my show, don't just go for a dream that you've always had, because you might have outgrown that dream now. You might be ready for something bigger, better, different.” Joan on “Women We Should Know”

Good Corporate Citizenship In A Crisis – Susan McPherson, McPherson Strategies
Electric Ladies Podcast
11/15/23 • 39 min
“Companies are not just being more strategic about corporate social impact, but are taking on the role of activists themselves. Consumers and employees now expect companies to be vocal and to protect the rights of our people and our planet. CEOs are the voices of companies and can no longer remain neutral and silent as our world grapples with serious challenges.” Susan McPherson, McPherson Memo
Company leaders are in a quandary. They want their organizations to be seen as good corporate citizens but they don’t know how to deal with the complicated, emotionally-charged and overlapping crises we are all facing today. The barbaric attack on innocent Israelis by Hamas on October 7th and the massive military response by Israel on Gaza alone – on top of the war in Ukraine and attacks on democracy from American influentials and climate change – are paralyzing many private sector leaders. What should they do?
Listen to Susan McPherson, CEO of McPherson Strategies and highly-regarded veteran communications leader, explain how leaders should/could manage this fraught time in this candid and powerful conversation with Electric Ladies Podcast host Joan Michelson.
You’ll hear:
- What a good corporate citizen really is.
- What “green hushing” is and where it’s coming from – and how it’s not anti-ESG.
- How to respond to complicated geopolitical crises
- How to be an authentic leader and who are some role models for that.
- Plus, insightful career advice, such as....
“it's doing an internal audit of yourself and learning what your superpowers are, and then being able to show up in the world, offering support to others. And I guarantee you, the support will come back. It may not be the next day, it may not be the next week, but over the arc of your career and connecting is hard....(and) Lead with kindness, lead with compassion, listen more than you speak.” Susan McPherson on Electric Ladies podcast

Mobilize, Measure, Manage ESG – Evelyn Saelens, ESG Advisory at UL Solutions
“These climate events, they're impacting our everyday lives. They're making the world unsafe...Sometimes it might feel that it's hard to get to solid, tangible information. It's hard to know that what you're doing is meaningful, that it really has an impact. So the, what made it extremely interesting at being able to develop these ESG programs at UL Solutions is that the science and the standards driven angle always flows through what we aim to do.”

We can be aggressive if we know what we want. Let's do it.
