Moni Sullivan
Education With An Edge

a degree. In 2004, Moni had her first child and became a stay-at-home mom. She always had a dream of becoming a mental health therapist, but thought she was too old to go back and finish what started over a decade ago. When her youngest started kindergarten, Moni made the decision to go back to school.
A year before she was set to graduate, Moni embarked on a journey that would forever change the trajectory of not only her own life, but the lives of her family and others who have heard her story. Moni was suffering from severe depression and considered dropping out of school. In January of 2018, Moni decided to reclaim her life and started taking care of her health.
In the past 3+ years, Moni has lost 118lbs. “When people see me, they focus on the physical changes. While the physical changes are awesome, what this journey has done for my mental health often brings me to tears. Making this investment in myself has saved my life, allowing me to be a better version of myself.”
Moni graduated from the University of Nebraska Omaha with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology in 2019, proving that it’s never too late, and you’re never too old, to chase your dreams. While she had visions of becoming a mental health therapist, Moni uses her degree and her own journey to help others. “I receive several messages from individuals who share their journeys with me. We celebrate weight loss but my favorite things to celebrate are the non-scale victories. To have someone tell me because of my story, they started theirs and they finally see their worth, it makes me cry happy tears. This journey I’ve been on has not always been easy, it’s been full of a lot of peaks and valleys, but I never gave up. To hear people say my story has inspired them to create their own, words can’t express how much that means to me. You are beautiful, you are strong, and you are worth it.”
Moni has recently created, Unearth Yourself, which can be found on Facebook and Instagram. “I wanted to create a community to help individuals realize their worth and that they are not alone in the feelings they are experiencing. I get it.” A Hurrdat Media Production. Hurrdat Media is a digital media and commercial videoproduction company based in Omaha, NE. Robin La Fleur: My Mental Health Transformation
Education With An Edge
08/01/22 • 20 min
After serving 30 years in the military working as an RN in the medical field, I was forced to make life and death decisions daily. I witnessed trauma- mentally and physically, collaborating with patients with severe medical injuries, accidents, and suicide attempts,-with some people losing their lives. I have learned to suppress my emotions with an ‘invisible Shield of Armor’ which enabled me to prevent patients from seeing my emotions. I lived by an unspoken rule of silence, not showing weakness. Today, I still feel guilty about patients that have committed suicide who I could not save- multiple wives blamed me as a nurse for not being able to save their husbands. I often think back on what I could have done differently to help save their lives.
Over the years I have struggled with my own pain of survivor’s guilt and personal trauma from witnessing so much suffering, but I hid my feelings and my PTSD disorder in multiple little pockets on the inside of my armor because in the Military, we do not talk about our pain. Our training is to be strong to ‘march on smartly, the mission comes first.’ In the medical community, front-line workers are “secondary victims” since we do not have time to process what has happened, or to cry or talk about our experiences. My job was to clean up the room, console the family and put a smile on for the next patient needing medical care. I still carry survivors’ guilt for my first boss who committed suicide despite my attempts to prevent it.
Over time, my mental health fell into a downward spiral, and I went from a high-achieving performer who received multiple accolades, to fearing everything and everyone. I decided to take a medical leave and began collaborating with a therapist who has helped me achieve leaps and bounds so that I could heal and be better able to help others.
Today, I am proud to have turned my trauma into triumph by mentoring women who need to heal emotional hurts. As a member of the Board of Directors, a Medical Advisor and fundraiser forReformations at the Crossroads, a non-profit for women, I help them overcome their past, create a supportive community, and to gain mental wellness for a successful future. My personal experience of feeling broken mentally and physically has made me a perfect fit to empower women with Hope, Love, and Freedom from pain- transforming their minds, bodies, and spirits to create the life they deserve!
