190: We're talking today about practices and products that give the air of casual elegance - the girl that's always put together but never trying too hard, can host on a whim, and loves a little indulgent skincare. Creating moments of little luxury does not mean compromising our values of conscious consumption; we're exploring the more sustainable options to habits we're picking up with time.

Let’s introduce the concept of ECOFEMINISM. There is an intersection of gender equality and environmental exploitation ... and today we’re just skimming the surface of the issues within that connection. Beyond explaining the ideology behind ecofeminism, we’ll also touch briefly on women’s education, maternal health, fast fashion, and veganism.

I’ve taken an unintentional hiatus recently, largely due to some recent heightened climate anxiety... so today, we are defining climate or eco- anxiety, and breaking down some tips from the American Psychological Association on how to best combat these feelings. We’re talking burnout, dissociation, and making sure we’re setting ourselves up best to regularly support our mental health around this climate crisis, not just when we’re getting big waves of doom-and-gloom.
Episodes mentioned:
126: Climate Anxiety: How to Turn Worry into Compassionate Action with Dr. Renee Lertzman

185: Today's episode is emotional - we are discussing the SCOTUS decision to overturn Roe v Wade, effectively retracting the constitutional right to abortion. We review what this decision means for women living in poverty, BIPOC women, women threatened by extreme weather events... and ultimately the challenges that continue to mount for these individuals in the face of climate change.

Is ‘conscious consumerism’ enough? This week we’re exploring what it means to truly use your dollars to influence change with author and activist Tanja Hester. Tanja’s upcoming book, Wallet Activism: How To Use Every Dollar You Spend, Earn, and Save as a Force for Change bridges the knowledge divide between environmental and social activism, and acts as a through, no-BS handbook to navigate the nuances of thoughtful spending (and saving!). Our conversation explores case studies of the power of collective *and* policy action, consumer guilt, and how to do your best in a (broken) capitalist society.

We’re speaking with Marci Zaroff, a true pioneer in the environmental-consumer movement! Marci coined and trademarked the term “ecofashion” in 1995 – she’s been leading the way for a more sustainable society for almost three decades, through food, wellness, fashion, and social justice. We discuss at length the term ECORenaissance: the title of her first book serves as a very comprehensive term to describe her life’s work and where consumerism is moving. We talk about the organic agriculture business case, why fashion is a crucial means for delivering the sustainability conversation, and how pop culture’s understanding of sustainability has shifted in the last thirty years.

We’re speaking with the incredible Dr. Katharine Hayhoe! Dr. Hayhoe is widely regarded as one of the most influential voices in the climate conversation (and one of my personal inspirations). Dr. Katharine Hayhoe is an atmospheric scientist her research focuses on developing and applying high-resolution climate projections to understand what climate change means for people and the natural environment. She is a professor and director of the Climate Science Center at Texas Tech University, and has authored 125+ peer-reviewed publications. Plus, Dr. Hayhoe served as a lead author for the Second, Third, and Fourth U.S. National Climate Assessment. Among her many honors and awards for climate communication, environmental leadership, and her influence on this crisis, Katharine Hayhoe was named one of the United Nations Champions of the Earth, the UN’s highest environmental honor. Today, we’re speaking about what climate change looks like today, the wide array of climate solutions available, and how to communicate climate as we look forward. We discuss carbon pricing, the personal carbon footprint, and the historic influence of oil/gas companies.
Katharine Hayhoe’s TED Talk, “The most important thing you can do to fight climate change: talk about it”
Episodes mentioned:
* 91: BP, Amazon, + Corporate Idealism | Christine Bader* 84: UN Sustainable Development Goals, How Humanitarian Concerns Are Tied To Climate | Claudia LaRue

We’re speaking with Leah Thomas, of GreenGirlLeah. Perhaps you’ve seen her viral Instagram post with the title slide of ‘Environmentalists for Black Lives Matter.’ We’re speaking today on Intersectional Environmentalism – defining it, relating it to feminism a bit, and talking broadly about how different cultures experience nature and those human-environment relationships historically. We also touch on climate racism, and why black, POC, and marginalized communities are experiencing the most severe public health risks from environmental degradation. Additionally, we talk about the cognitive dissonance around why we may be experiencing disconnect from natural disasters and environmental degradation.
Leah Thomas is an intersectional environmental activist and eco-communicator based in Southern California. She’s passionate about advocating for and exploring the relationship between social justice and environmentalism. Her work has been featured on The Good Trade, Buzzfeed, Vogue... her ideas of ‘intersectional environmentalism’ are literally changing the environmental world as we speak. Find her online at greengirlleah.com + on Instagram, @GreenGirlLeah.
Additional episodes on equity, climate racism, human-environment interactions and injustices, etc:
