On December 31, 1999, the world was on edge about a possible technological shutdown. Due to a programming bug that only allowed the last two digits of the year to update, people theorized that a society that relied on technology would fall into complete disarray when the date failed to change at the turn of the millennium. Much to people’s relief, the “Y2K Bug” caused minimal disruption. However, what if the widespread panic had been warranted? Kyle Mooney and Evan Winter imagine a possible doomsday scenario in their apocalyptic comedy, Y2K.
In the film, outcasts Eli (Jaeden Martell) and Danny (Julian Dennison) are determined to end New Year's Eve with a kiss from popular high school basketball star Laura (Rachel Zegler). But when the clock strikes midnight, the festivities quickly turn to mayhem as technology revolts, transforming into monstrous, humanoid killing machines. As the chaos unfolds, the characters embark on a wild, action-packed adventure to survive—narrowly escaping death and avoiding becoming slaves to the machines. Along the way, they receive help from unlikely sages, including Limp Bizkit's Fred Durst and video store clerk Garrett (played by Mooney).
Other familiar faces include '90s icon Alicia Silverstone and music artist The Kid Laroi.
We sat down with Mooney and Winter to chat about all things Y2K.

Ep 23 | Conversation with Surf Mesa
ECHO - The Podcast
10/08/20 • 20 min
File under “mellifluous.” That’s how Los Angeles’ Powell Aguirre likes to think of the music he makes as Surf Mesa. It’s electronic, but full of organic texture. It’s rooted in dance, but sounds best by the light of the full moon. It’s sweet, but also thoughtful. In other words, as Surf puts it, “music for good feels.” That phrase certainly sums up his biggest hit to date, “ily (i love you baby)” featuring Emilee, a tropically tinged bop that was born on TikTok, but quickly conquered listening platforms around the world, amassing over820million combined streams to date, topping U.S. and Global Viral Charts, and debuting on Top 40 radio. Early press has included Rolling Stone, Billboard, HITS, Idolator, Soundazed and Fresh Music Freaks.
Though he’s only 20, Surf has logged an impressive number of hours honing his craft. He grew up in Sammamish, Washington, outside Seattle, where an older brother hooked him up with FL Studio –when Surf was in third grade. The summer after his senior year,Surf broke his leg and was bedridden for months. Unexpectedly, that time stuck at home paid off in the form of an EP, titled bedroom, of course. When the cast came off, he wasted no time moving in with musician friends in Los Angeles.
Then one night scrolling TikTok, he came across Batesville, Arkansas’ Emilee Flood playing an acoustic cover of Frankie Valli’s 1967 hit “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You.” Captivated by her honeyed voice, Surf dropped the audio into his DAW and, within hours, had posted his remixon SoundCloud. Soon, label reps were blowing up his phone. He signed with Astralwerks.
There’s no shortage of collaborations in the works, beginning with Surf’s remix of Marshmello and Halsey’s “Be Kind” and his new single, “Somewhere” ft. Gus Dapperton. While the electronic landscape evolves at a dizzying speed, Surf knows what he wants from his own music. He calls it “electronic alternative”–a style that balances digital textures with piano, guitar, and even acoustic drums, and focuses on songwriting as much as sick beats. It’s catchy. It’s chill. It’s mellifluous.
We chatted with Surf Mesa about his music and future in the music industry and much more.

Ep 30 | Conversation with Ian Nelson
ECHO - The Podcast
11/20/20 • 22 min
Raised in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Ian Nelson began his acting career at a young age. He is best known for his screen debut in the blockbuster film THE HUNGER GAMES, his arc on the hit MTV series TEEN WOLF, and his leading turn on Peacock’s THERE’S JOHNNY. Over the last 11 years, he has had the privilege of starring alongside actors like ROBERT DOWNEY JR, JENNIFER LOPEZ, BETTE MIDLER, JAMES MARSDEN, and LAVERNE COX to name a few.
All throughout his life, Nelson has been passionate about music. He always travels with his guitar, and a few years ago while on location, he started writing his own songs. When Nelson returned to Los Angeles, he shared a demo with one of his vocal coaches, DAVE STROUD, and Dave introduced him to up-and-coming music producer JACOB MCCASLIN. Together the two began collaborating on what would become Nelson’s debut single: “21st Century Love.”
Nelson got the idea for the song when he was on a dating app and matched with a beautiful red headed girl, whom he knew nothing about, yet couldn’t get out of his mind. Perplexed by how real his attraction felt, Nelson wanted to write a song that explored the changing landscape of loneliness, intimacy, and the desire for connection in our technology-dependent modern age.
The music video was shot in April of 2020 at the beginning of the Pandemic, as the deserted streets of Los Angeles provided the ideal setting to express the themes of the song. At the crack of dawn, Nelson and Co-Director, LA celebrity photographer, COLLIN STARK, embarked on a socially distanced shoot to capture the one-take video that also features one of Nelson's passions: tap dancing. In addition to his directing and producing, Nelson also served as the video's editor.
We chatted with Nelson about his debut song and video and much more!
