Eating Like You Give a Damn
03/16/20 • 61 min
If you’ve been wondering what all the buzz is about around zero waste and sustainability, then you’re gonna love what I’m serving up for you today...
Carly Bergman is a vegan and zero waste advocate who studied sustainability and eco-spirituality at Florida Gulf Coast University, and is certified in permaculture design. Together with her boyfriend, Brendan, she founded Sustainable Duo, a brand that makes sustainability trendy and helps people to connect more with nature while providing common but sustainable everyday items that are usually made of plastic, like eating utensils, toothbrushes, and hygiene kits.
Carly and The Sustainable Duo is also known for Futuristic February - a challenge they run in the month of February to bring global awareness to the amount of waste we as individuals accumulate each month while providing advice for simple, sustainable swaps to decrease our carbon footprint.
The couple also founded the company Plant Protein, which provide holistic protein bars that are not only vegan, but also - you guessed it - sustainable.

07: Why Sex and Fitness are Better as a Vegan (at Any Age!) | Ellen Jaffe Jones
Eating Like You Give a Damn
07/29/19 • 59 min
This episode is chock full of expert advice on eating plant-based affordably...strength, fitness, and agility at any age...and sex.
Yes, my friends, we get to learn some very interesting things about sex and how it can be taken to new heights when you’re eating like a vegan. This isn’t bait, this is real science and it applies to both men and women!
(We keep the conversation clean and informative, but it may not be suitable for young ears)
Ellen is a prolific author of 6 vegan health and fitness books including Eat Vegan on $4 a Day, Vegan Fitness for Mortals and Vegan Sex. She’s a nationally ranked sprinter and recently won the Gold at the National Senior Games in the 4x100 meters in the Women’s 65-69 age group.
She has placed in 173 5K or longer races for her age group and competes in everything from the 50 meters to the marathon, rare for anyone vegan or not.
She’s a certified personal trainer, running coach, and sought after speaker. And, Her family was part of the breast cancer gene studies, and she is the only adult female in her family without it.
In this interview, we also talk about:
- Why Ellen thinks many athletes drop out of their competitive sport as they get older, and the secret to maintaining high energy and mobility while reducing your risk of injury as you age.
- How races typically end with animal-derived foods as a reward for the competitors, so Ellen decided to sponsor a race with all vegan food - and I think you’ll be surprised to hear the community’s response to that.
- Plus, she provides very valuable expert advice for anyone at any age who’s starting or continuing a fitness program to remain injury-free and increase your stamina.
So, stamina in fitness and in the bedroom - so be sure to listen to the end.

11: Disrupting Food and Fashion with a Boot-Loving Texan | Kat Mendenhall
Eating Like You Give a Damn
08/26/19 • 61 min
Do you feel drawn in by the message of making conscious and cruelty-free choices, but find it difficult to identify as any of the labels we see related to diet and lifestyle today?
Or maybe you’ve tossed around the idea of turning your passion for plant-based living into a business that you love?
If so, then you’ll relish this inspo-packed episode because I am excited to present Kat Mendenhall - who is a boot-loving Texan who grew up among cattle ranchers, became a vegan coach, and set out to change the world without changing her personal Texan style.
Kat is on a mission to disrupt the fashion industry by offering a line of cruelty-free cowboy boots and other non-leather Western accessories. Kat believes animals should not suffer for fashion and creates high-end beautiful vegan products that replace the use of animals without sacrificing quality.
She is also a master vegan lifestyle coach and educator certified by Main Street Vegan Academy, a certified culinary nutrition expert through The Academy of Culinary Nutrition, and is certified in plant-based nutrition through the T. Colin Campbell Foundation offered at eCornell University.
In this lively chat, we discuss:
- How the leather industry is mistakenly viewed as a by-product of the meat industry, and Kat explains how it is actually a co-product driven by consumer demand
- The most critical (and highly toxic) problem with leather affecting human life and why it’s the social justice issue no one’s talking about - and Kat’s proposal to fix it.
- Kat shares valuable tips if you find yourself living in an area that doesn’t have a vegan presence for support
- And, She even breaks down exactly what it looks like to work with her as a master vegan lifestyle coach, as well as how you can order your very own custom cowboy or cowgirl boots that are made from non-toxic, high quality, and sustainable vegan leather.
Plus, Kat has a cool collection of Texas Vegan Recipes in an e-book to give you for free. Sign up for her newsletter on her website and it’s yours!

14: Lies About Protein Exposed by The Game Changers Movie | James Wilks
Eating Like You Give a Damn
09/16/19 • 39 min
What does a winner of The Ultimate Fighter, a five-time Formula One champion, Jackie Chan, the number 1 ranked tennis player in the world, and Arnold Schwarzenegger have in common?
They are just some of the many big names in Hollywood and sports that you’ll find on the world-class team responsible for the highly anticipated, revolutionary new documentary which is fueled by the truth about meat, protein, and strength called The Game Changers.
The film follows the story of James “Lightning” Wilks, a UFC fighter whose world was turned upside down when he discovered an elite group of world-renowned athletes and scientists who prove that everything we had been taught about protein was a lie.
And today’s guest is none other than James Wilks himself to share the goods on why and how this movie came together.
James Wilks is a combatives instructor for the US military (including the US Marines, US Army Rangers, and US Navy SEALs) and a former UFC fighter who won the Ultimate Fighter in 2009. After a shocking discovery regarding gladiators - which he tells us about in this interview - it launched him on a five-year quest for the Truth in Nutrition, modeled after Bruce Lee's Truth in Combat philosophy.
He put every preconception he had about nutrition to the test, traveling to four continents to meet with dozens of the world’s strongest, fastest, and toughest athletes, as well as leading experts on athletics, nutrition, and anthropology.
What he discovered was so revolutionary, with such profound implications for human performance and health — and even the future of the planet itself — that he had to share it with the world. Is the world ready for what James and his team have to share? We’re about to find out!
In this interview, we talk about:
- What exactly sets this film apart from any other that utilizes studies on sports nutrition - and human nutrition in general
- James’s personal experience of measurable performance enhancement that gave him a huge advantage over his competitors just 6-weeks after going plant-based (and strength and fitness enthusiasts, you’ll be blown away by his achievement)
- And James explains how diet directly impacts your - um - manhood, and how to prevent and reverse erectile dysfunction at every age...no viagra necessary!

13: Benevolent Pirate Answers Your Burning Questions About Seafood | Captain Paul Watson
Eating Like You Give a Damn
09/09/19 • 53 min
Do I have an episode for you to sink your teeth into! My guest is both loved and feared by many all over the world for his 40 plus years of marine animal and ocean conservation activism.
Captain Paul Watson, esteemed Founder and President of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society has starred in seven seasons of Animal Planet’s television series Whale Wars, and he has received many awards and commendations over the years for his conservation and animal rights activism - including from the Dalai Lama.
Sea Shepherd, which Captain Paul founded in 1977, does so much in service of our seas, such as removing killer nets, conducting vital marine research, cleaning beaches, patrolling waters, as well as taking aggressive nonviolent action against anyone threatening the fragile balance of our ocean’s ecosystems.
Hundreds of thousands of marine animals – some of them already endangered – are targeted and trapped by poachers each year. The sustainability of the planet is at risk, too. With so much at stake, Sea Shepherd is unrelenting in protecting the seas and stopping those who destroy habitats and marine life.
In this interview with Captain Paul, we talk about:
- Why he decided to part ways with Greenpeace (which he co-founded) and set up an interventionist organization to go after poachers in our oceans
- How he landed the show Whale Wars on cable television, which ran from 2008-2015 - and you’ll be amazed to hear the incredible and historic victory for whales as a result of that
- The truth about sustainably sourced, wild-caught, dolphin safe fish, and whether or not farmed fish is a better alternative
- And we also get to hear about the politics of species extinction, the media's response to Paul’s aggressive tactics as an activist, and his firsthand experience seeing the demand for vegan food around the world today.
And, if you get jazzed and want to join the Sea Shepherd movement and support this heroic cause, he gives us a glimpse into volunteer life, too!

25: Transforming Cattle Ranches into Compassionate Businesses | Renee King-Sonnen
Eating Like You Give a Damn
05/04/20 • 55 min
Did you know Texas is going vegan? At least, with sustainable farming pioneers like this guest, Texas and other cattle-raising states are well on their way...
Renee King-Sonnen - former cattle rancher's wife who loved rodeos and cowboy boots - is the Founder and Executive Director of Rowdy Girl Sanctuary - a 501(c)(3) non-profit. Since going vegan in 2014, Renee has converted Rowdy Girl Sanctuary from a cattle ranch to a sanctuary for over 120 animals (and her husband from a multi-generational cattle rancher to an animal rescuing vegan). This is the first documented beef cattle ranch vegan conversion in history, and also has pioneering initiatives such as:
- The Rancher Advocacy Program which transitions cattle ranchers and animal farmers out of animal agribusiness and into other viable farming and business practices,
- and Families Choosing Compassion is a compassionate alternative to Future Farmers of America and 4-H and brings families of children together that are saddened by the end result that leads to the slaughter of raising their animal friends as “school projects.”
Rowdy Girl Sanctuary inspires other ranchers to experience a paradigm shift while helping them move from participating in the cruelty of factory farming to living out compassion towards the animals raised for food.

04: Get Your Life Back with The Autoimmune Recovery Blueprint | Dr. Benjamin Benulis
Eating Like You Give a Damn
07/08/19 • 53 min
Researchers estimate that approx 1 in 5 Americans suffers from 1 or more autoimmune disease. And, it’s estimated that up to 10% of the global population suffers..but many more suffer undiagnosed. Which means that someone you know is suffering...perhaps it’s you?
Autoimmune disease occurs when your immune system mistakenly attacks your body and causes your body to overreact to harmless allergens, and the autoimmune category consists of up to 100 diseases that are widely scattered over a number of medical specialties. Unfortunately, this leads to an exhausting journey of suffering while seeing multiple doctors over an extended period of time before even reaching a diagnosis.
Which was exactly where Dr. Benjamin Benulis unexpectedly found himself in his late 20’s, before becoming a doctor, that is.
Back then when he was just Ben, he was suffering from extreme muscle aches, and he was in chronic pain, he was fatigued and had severe digestive pain which he describes as WW3 going on in his intestines....and also eczema which developed on his hands.
So his health, his social life, and his performance at work all tanked.
He was shuffled from doctor to doctor for a long time when finally someone suggested he take a food allergy test. And just wait till you hear what the results were, and how he became highly motivated to heal himself when medical doctors couldn’t!
Today, Dr. Benjamin Benulis is a plant-based doctor of chiropractic in Phoenix, AZ. After coming to a plant-based diet to reverse his own autoimmune disease, he now helps people all over the world do the same.
