In this episode of Earl Grey, hosts Joe Keegan, Justin Oser, and Amy Nelson discuss "The Most Toys," an episode in season three of The Next Generation in which Data is kidnapped by a nefarious collector of unique items, Kivas Fajo. 1701-B.Viewers of Star Trek: The Next Generation often spotted those golden Enterprise models in the Observation Lounge over the years - but what was the story behind them? We knew the 1701 and would get to know the Enterprise-A in the TOS-era films; the heroic sacrifice of the Enterprise-C was eventually told in the season three episode "Yesterday's Enterprise." However, there was an Excelsior-class-sized hole in the Enterprise legacy. It was not until TNG's inaugural motion picture, Star Trek Generations, that fans witnessed the christening of the first "Kirk-less" U.S.S. Enterprise - the NCC-1701-B. Earl Grey discusses the ship itself - a modification of the Excelsior-class design (one that remained dormant for several generations!), that had some "extra fat" in its "dad bod," from nacelles that go on for light years to the "love handles" around the main deflector. The trio also discusses the members of the maiden crew - from the much aligned Captain John Harriman to the plucky Ensign Demora Sulu, whose story would be expounded on in the novel-verse. They also try to untangle the timeline of when the third Starfleet vessel named Enterprise entered and left the scene of the Trek verse. So don't sit down in your chair - instead make time for the important things, like this week's discussion of the starship Enterprise, NCC-1701-B.HostsDaniel Proulx, Phillip Gilfus, & Darren MoserEditor / ProducerDarren MoserExecutive ProducersNorman C. TNG Season Eight.

Going into Season Seven, many of the actors from The Next Generation were contracted through Season Eight. At some point, the decision was made to end the show so that the creatives could focus on movies and the launch of Voyager. In this episode of Earl Grey, hosts Phillip Gilfus, Darren Moser, and Daniel Proulx discuss various aspects of TNG’s lost season. What would we have wanted to see? What would we want to avoid? What might we have gotten? We also discuss how an eighth season of The Next Generation might have affected the other incarnations of Star Trek.

The Arts in TNG.The Next Generation arguably features the most concerts, play performances, poetry readings, and art works than any other Star Trek television series. Whether it was having every senior officer being musically inclined, having fun in the clay modeling room making a mask or an entry for "Captain Picard Day," or keeping Commander William T. Riker from the nude modeling painting class, TNG inserted cultural works into many episodes. The show's writers/producers made sure that noted Shakespearean performer Sir Patrick Stewart incorporated several references in the series' seven-year run, from the Bard's historical plays to his sonnets. Lt. Commander Data's development in humanity also included his exploration of artistic self-expression, leading to him playing the violin, painting his dreams, and being directed by Captain Jean-Luc Picard in his one-man performance of a "A Christmas Carol." Join co-hosts Phillip Gilfus, Darren Moser, and Daniel Proulx as they find the "sweet spot" of the NCC-1701-D, bust out their Ressikan flute and rolled-up piano keyboard, and talk about the great music, plays, and art of TNG. Try not to fall asleep as they reenact the most famous poetry reading in all of Trekdom! HostsDaniel Proulx, Phillip Gilfus, & Darren MoserEditor / ProducerDarren Moser

Emotion Chip.A central character struggle in Star Trek: The Next Generation is Lieutenant Commander's Data's lack of emotions. Our favorite android experienced life on the U.S.S. Enterprise-D but was constantly challenged in his attempt to relate to emotional humanoid life forms. Phillip, Daniel, and Darren look at the flagship's second officer's "pre-emotion chip" existence and ask: Did Data actually already have the capacity for emotion? Did he evolve over those seven years, experiencing emotional states?Earl Grey also examines the ever-changing look and features of Dr. Noonian Soong's emotion chip, introduced in the fourth season episode "Brothers." They discuss its appearance in "Descent, Parts 1 and 2," and the chip's installation during the inaugural TNG film, Star Trek: Generations. The trio asks whether "emotional" Data in the film was done well and how fans received that portrayal. They also look at the emotion chip's cameos and various "upgraded" features in the other three feature films. So "stop it, stop it, stop it!", open up your mind, and listen to this episode (which may overload your neural net), analyzing Data's emotion chip.HostsDaniel Proulx, Phillip Gilfus, & Darren MoserEditor / ProducerDarren MoserExecutive ProducersNorman C. Spooky TNG.Mystery. Flickering lights. Strange sounds ... and clicking ... always the familiar, repeating clicking sounds ...Star Trek: The Next Generation has its fair share of episodes that cause fans to hide behind the couch. Darren, Daniel, and Phillip turn down the lights, get out the flashlights ... er, palm beacons, and talk about their favorite spooky TNG episodes. There is the surreal happenings in the fourth season outing "Night Terrors," where a sleepless crew fights their own minds playing tricks on them. The trio also discusses the alien abduction mystery "Schisms," with the "scary" talents of the Holodeck computer knowing the difference between a table and a chair. The sixth season gave fans the Inception-like episode "Frame of Mind," with Commander William Riker taking us on a psychotic thriller of a ride. Then there is the "100% scientifically-accurate" story "Genesis," which has us ready to hang from the bulkheads, as we look out for "de-evolved" Lieutenant Worf or Spider-Barclay.So feel the terror in this Halloween-inspired episode of Earl Grey, as they discuss the spooky episodes of Next Gen.HostsDaniel Proulx, Phillip Gilfus, & Darren MoserEditor / ProducerDarren MoserExecutive ProducersNorman C. Captain Picard must find the saboteur after an explosion in engineering and information leaks to the Romulans. Starfleet sends in Admiral Satie to assist Picard. Her determination is relentless. She continues her search even after the resolution of the problems have been found and ends up calling Captain Picard a traitor to the Federation. In this episode of Earl Grey, hosts Richard Marquez and Amy Nelson with special guest Patrick Devlin discuss "The Drumhead." This profound episode reveals the true nature of witch hunts. Episodes We Love to Defend.

While The Next Generation is widely loved and home to some of Star Trek's greatest stories, it's also well known for having a few episodes that are a nacelle (or two) short of achieving warp speed. From Season One's "Justice" to Season Seven's "Sub Rosa," there are those that just don't seem to stick with most Trek fans. In this episode of Earl Grey hosts Phillip Gilfus, Darren Moser, and Daniel Proulx each choose the top three episodes that they love despite the flaws, then defend them against the petaQ... we mean other hosts. It's a free for all on this week's Earl Grey!

Trek Switch Season 2. For a second time, Phillip, Daniel, and Darren explore a season's worth of Star Trek: The Next Generation episodes and decide which stories might be better explored in their sister Trek series. In Earl Grey 124 "Hide and Trelane," the trio delved into the inaugural season of Next Gen - this time it is season two's turn to be "Trek Switched." As usual, the co-hosts can choose to either rewrite an episode or make it a prequel/sequel story for Enterprise, The Original Series, Deep Space Nine, and Voyager. This episode asks how would Captain Jonathan Archer and the NX-01 crew deal with the "explorer" Nagilum in the 22nd Century? Earl Grey re-visits controversial ground by setting "The Child" in the series it was originally meant for - the original NCC-1701. The threat of the Dominion War causes Captain Benjamin Sisko and his Starfleet crew to face off against their Bajoran militia co-workers in a version of "Peak Performance." Lastly, Captain's Assistant (or Assistant to the Captain) Naomi Wildman causes a great debate about the prime directive when she ends up with a new "pen pal."
