Dystopia Tonight was born out of the Covid-19 Pandemic to give people a light-hearted break from the absurdity of the world around them by showcasing artists, comedians, musicians, and actors from all across the entertainment field and getting them to open up about what exactly they’ve been doing during this bizarre time in everyone’s lives. John asks about the state of their lives, careers, and well-being, while we all navigate through the current dystopia we’ve come to find ourselves living in.

Dustin Chafin and I are not sure where we met but we know it was probably someplace shitty and that’s all that matters. We talk about his patch into comedy, paving his way through NY by running sought after comedy shows early in his career, his move to LA, his incredible storm off on Last Comic standing, how the pandemic change his perspective and more! Enjoy!

Maria Comstock and her dad, a retired United States Spy, AKA “Agent Buttercup” blew our collective minds on this episode of Dystopia Tonight. After finding out her dad was a spy she started making the now wildly popular TikToks titled “Asking A Retired Spy the Questions We Really Want To Know.” We dive into some of the unanswered questions on many of their TikToks, how she discovered he was a spy, the true message behind their videos, Maria’s college life, her activism, and what they both see as their role and opportunity while making these videos. Enjoy!

Had the pleasure of being on another podcast with Dr. Firth a few months back and after finally getting to read his book “A Human History of Emotion” having him on Dystopia was a must! Incredibly thoughtful and funny with an ability to communicate what he’s found while digging through our emotional history makes him a great guest and a brilliant author. Enjoy!

Actor, Ghostbuster, and all around great guy Ernie Hudson joins us on Dystopia for an amazing conversation about his life in entertainment, being a father, dabbling in Standup, the appeal and resurgence of everything 80s, acting opposite his son on Oz, his new show The Family Business on HBO, and of course all things Ghostbusters including reprising his role in the new Ghostbusters: After Life! Enjoy!

Ritch Shydner is the absolute best of the best. Incredibly funny, giving, and a wealth of wisdom and stories from a lifetime on the road and in show business as an actor and writer. His documentary “I Am Comic” is one of the best documentaries on comedy I’ve ever seen and his book “I Killed” will actually put you in the time and place of the worlds best comics as they talk about their stories from the road. We cover a lot in an hour but we’ll def have him back for more. Enjoy!

Amazing comic and great friend of the show, Tommy Taylor Jr. joins us hot off the heels of his standing ovation worthy Dry Bar Comedy special out of Utah! Hailing from DC and crushing it in commercials, dating shows, HBO and his own long running live monthly shows titled Almost Ladies Night it was a blast catching up with him. Especially considering he was on the very first “lost” episode of Dystopia Tonight. Enjoy!

Day 101 - Jane Morris & Jeff Michalski

Dystopia Tonight With John Poveromo

play

Getting either Jane or Jeff on individually would have been incredible (and will eventually have to be done) but to get them both on at the same time was an unbelievable treat and a fascinating trip through their history in comedy/improv and the acting world.

Almost all of late 20th century comedy came through them. And to say they’ve worked with everyone is an understatement. Al Pacino, Meryl Streep, Tom Hanks, Jackie Gleason, Amy Sedaris, Chris Farley, Stephen Colbert, Drew Carey, Gary Marshall - I’ll stop there because it is harder to find someone in comedy who isn’t connected to Jeff ands Jane and I’m truly happy to call them friends and to have had them on my show. Enjoy!
