Now that the Super Bowl is over, it's time to focus on the 2023 dynasty fantasy football season. If you play in a salary cap league, like Dynasty Owner, that means talking about contracts and real NFL player salaries.
Jay Pounds (@jaypoundsnfl) and Steve Van Tassell (@SteveVT33) review a bunch of potential trades by a Dynasty Owner who has a bounty of five 2023 rookie picks, 15 picks in 2024 and 10 picks in 2025. For the past few weeks, these off-season articles on helping to get people ready for their 2021 Dynasty Owner start-up leagues have mainly looked back at the 2020 season.
These have included articles on the best players in the regular season and playoffs, players who should be picked in the first round based on their 2020 performance, players to avoid drafting based on their 2020 performance and salaries, second half breakout players and players who faded in the second half of 2020. All of them looked at which players to draft, or not draft, this upcoming season based on last season.
In looking at how the two Chase for the Ring Champions (Eddie Driscoll in 2019 and Viktor Kilgore in 2020) put together their Ring winning teams, it appears that drafting is critically important to Dynasty Owner success.
However, there are limits though on just looking back at past performance. Past performance is nice, but is only one part of your overall draft strategy.
There are plenty of ideas on how to construct a winning redraft or “regular” dynasty fantasy football league, but likely none of them can be fully applied to Dynasty Owner because of the inclusion of salaries and the salary cap.
Players and analysts can’t even agree on what draft strategy or strategies work in non-Dynasty Owner leagues and with only two years of history, there are no long-standing Dynasty Owner draft strategies that can be evaluated to determine their effectiveness.

As ironic as this may sound, I believe I just received one of the best orphan teams anyone will see and really defies the stereotype of orphan teams always being bad. The main issue with this is I am wanting to strip the team down to nothing and build it up with all of you and I just don’t see any positives from destroying what is already a phenomenal roster, luckily, I have a backup plan.
Before we get into the backup plan, I want to give you a bit of perspective on why we are going this route instead. I want to first start by breaking down the roster I was given so you can really understand why we are going with plan B instead. Below are the players on the roster by position.
I did leave a few players off the list, most notably Auden Tate and the kickers. As you can see this team doesn’t need much work outside of tweaking a few minor things. The main two moves I am looking to make before the 2021 season are trading Wilson and Golladay for future picks, or young talent. In this league Prescott and Cooper are free agents, so by trading Wilson and Golladay I pick up whatever value I get in return on top of Prescott and Cooper in free agency.
I am hoping trading off these two for Cooper and Prescott will be enough to put this team over the top and make a real run at The Chase for the Ring! Enough about this orphan team, lets jump into plan B. Plan B will be to input my original rebuild team into this series instead of the team listed above. I have mentioned this team in previous articles, the cause of the rebuild is the fact that I severely underestimated the quarterback position in Dynasty Owner and injuries. Below I will go in depth into the team we will be building together by position, as well as listing all of the future draft assets I have acquired for the team.
The time has come for the start of the series I have been waiting for, the orphan rebuild series. I am really hoping this series will be a lot of fun and a lot of you will join in and provide some input on specific moves. I would also love to have a few of you join in on a few videos so we can talk in depth about certain moves that need to be made. Blind Comparison: Miami Dolphins

The topic for today’s article will be the Miami Dolphins. The Dolphins barely missed the 2020 NFL playoffs as they were the final team left out in the AFC. They finished the season with a quiet 10 – 6 record. What also (not so quietly) occurred is the fact that Ryan Fitzpatrick was benched for Tua Tagovailoa after Week 6 when the Dolphins were 3 – 3. I’m not going to comment on what the Dolphins should or shouldn’t have done. Clearly they found success for the rest of the season as they went 7 – 3 after the initial benching. What I am going to say is that I found it to be a strange move. More importantly, this seems to be a theme for Fitz, especially over the past few seasons. I’m not sure what the stigma behind him as a starting NFL quarterback is, but there is clearly something. Remember back in 2018 when Fitzpatrick and Jameis Winston split the season. More accurately, Fitz started seven games and Winston started nine games. Neither were impressive as far as a winning percentage goes. Fitz went 2 – 5 as a starter and Winston went 3 – 6 as a starter. The fact is that neither of these players were getting the job done in the win column, but they were getting it done for fantasy owners. That’s really the most frustrating part. In 2018, Fitz was on pace for roughly 4,700 yards, 34 touchdowns and 24 interceptions. In fact, if you combine both Fitzpatrick and Winston’s stats for the year, this is what they would look like...

Rebuilding owners, it is time for another article to help you rebuild your Dynasty Owner roster! I am sure you have all figured out by now what this article will be. If you are just tuning in, we will be covering the AFC East in today's article. The past three weeks I have covered every player in the three remaining AFC divisions (that we are not talking about today) and placed them into three separate categories – Buy, Sell, and Hold. Remember these players are being viewed in the eyes of a rebuilding owner. The Buy category are players you will see are placed there for several reasons but the most important is they should be near the prime of their career as you wrap up your rebuild. The players in the Hold category tend to be players with a lot of question marks, players whose value has taken a significant hit, or players who are stuck behind a stud. The players in the Sell category are aging veterans who will either be on their last leg, or out of the league by the time your roster is ready to compete for championships. With the Wednesday news that New Orleans WR Michael Thomas was declaring himself out for the rest of the 2021 season, followed by Cleveland WR Odell Beckham Jr. being dismissed from practice, how to rid your Dynasty Owner roster of a high salary player should have been a hot topic of discussion among Dynasty Owners. There was a lot of other news on Wednesday as well with Aaron Rodgers testing positive for COVID followed by the news of his unvaccinated status, plus the sad news about how fast Henry Ruggs was driving on a residential street in Las Vegas when he crashed his car and killed a woman. It was a busy off-day for the NFL and Dynasty Owners with those players on their rosters. The Raiders rid themselves of Ruggs after the incident and Dynasty Owners probably need to do so as well. However, what’s the best way to remove Ruggs or another player, from your Dynasty Owner roster or should you do it at all? It’s not like a regular redraft or dynasty league, in which you make the decision on whether to drop the player and move on. This is Dynasty Owner which unites the fun and excitement of Fantasy Football with the skill and strategy of the Front Office and the business side of owning an NFL Franchise.

What’s up fellow Dynasty Owners? I hope all your playoff matchups went better than mine as I will not be winning a League Championship this year despite having two absolutely loaded rosters. I am not going to waste anytime this week, let’s get right into Jay’s weekly recap.
Week 15 in the NFL was extremely crazy, and it was headlined by the Detroit Lions beating the Arizona Cardinals and opening the NFC West back up for grabs. The Browns almost pulled one out without their top two quarterbacks and my main takeaway from the game is Baker Mayfield should be doing so much more with this roster around him. The Chiefs and the Chargers battled it out in an epic overtime thriller with the Chiefs coming out on top and sweeping the Chargers, which gives them a crucial head-to-head tiebreaker if needed. The Colts stunned the surging Patriots, and, in my opinion, Jonathan Taylor should be the front runner for MVP right now. The Bills took advantage of the Patriots loss beating the Panthers and now have a chance at redemption against the Patriots this week. The Ravens may have found a long-term backup in Tyler Huntley who almost led the Ravens to victory over the Number 1 seed in the NFC, the Green Bay Packers. The Saints seem to be some type of kryptonite to Tom Brady as they pulled out another improbable victory against the 44-year-old G.O.A.T. The last game I have on the list is none other than my Steelers keeping their playoff dreams alive beating the Tennessee Titans on Sunday. Good luck this week everyone! Now on to the free agents!

Two teams remain in contention for The Vince Lombardi Trophy, and we are a week and a half away from completing a season that I thought never had a chance to finish. After watching the early issues MLB had, I had little hope that season or any shortened season would finish. Not only did all those shortened seasons conclude with a champion, but the NFL is about to complete an entire season with zero cancelled games. Sure there were delays and postponements, but the fact that no games were cancelled blows my mind. A truly remarkable feat.
Is there a chance that a Patriots or Chiefs’ player contracts COVID prior to Super Bowl LV? Of course there is. It may even be probable, but the NFL has shown us that they will play on (even without a quarterback on the roster). This leaves little doubt in my mind that we will be watching football on February 7, 2021.
Today we are wrapping up the NFC West. We have already discussed the Cardinals, Rams and 49ers so we will be ending the month with the Seattle Seahawks. Like the 49ers, the Seahawks have an above average number of “noteworthy” free agents this year. In all, I recorded seven players that we need to keep our eyes on over the off season. Those players are:
Greg Olsen
Jacob Hollister
Carlos Hyde
Phillip Dorsett
Josh Gordon
David Moore
Chris Carson
I won’t be talking about all seven of these players in this article, but I do promise to update you all when/if they sign a new contract. For today though, I’m going to speculate about Carlos Hyde, David Moore and (the man you came here to hear about) Chris Carson.
