Duke Basketball Roundup - #408 - FINAL FOUR BOUND! Duke dunks Arkansas
play

03/27/22 • 41 min

They did it! The Blue Devils made it to the Final Four as their offense again proved to be more than enough to foil one of the best defenses in the nation. DBR Podcast hosts Jason, Sam, and Donald got together just moments after the game ended to discus how Duke dismantled Arkansas 78-69. The podcast crew has plenty of praise for Duke's big men and for some clutch shooting from the Duke guards. And the guys also reflect on how unlikely and amazing it is that the team is doing this in Coach K's final season at the helm. And, before they sign off, the podcast crew spends some time talking about what comes next. We may not know yet who Duke will be playing, but it sure looks like it could be Duke and UNC in the Final Four, a matchup that is both exciting and terrifying. Learn more about your ad choices. Duke Basketball Roundup - #318 - Coach K’s retirement announcement is official
play

06/03/21 • 50 min

The DBR Podcast is back again for more coverage and discussion of the enormous news that Mike Krzyzewski is ending his career of over four decades as the Duke Men's Basketball head coach, and that Jon Scheyer is taking his place in that job. Donald is unfortunately still not completely with us, but we soldier on with some limited audio from him. We begin with a discussion of how Duke got to this day and all of the challenges and considerations that went into the joint decision to announce Coach K's retirement on the same day that the program announced Scheyer's promotion. Jason notes how the timing of the announcement dovetails perfectly with Nina King's elevation as Duke's newest athletic director. After the break, we get to talk extensively for the first time about now head coach in waiting, Jon Scheyer. We feel good that he will bring his recruiting prowess to the top job, but what else are we looking for as he assumes arguably the highest-profile job in college basketball? We'll be back again really soon to keep talking about Coach K, his legacy, and the new world of Duke Men's Basketball under Coach Jon Scheyer. Stay in touch with us at dbrpodcast at gmail.com and you'll hear from us again very soon. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

The Duke Men’s Basketball Team finally open the 2022-23 season, and it’s a great debut not just for the many freshmen and transfers on the team, but also for head coach Jon Scheyer. We recap the good, the bad, and the favorites on Episode 456. The 71-44 victory over the Jacksonville Dolphins was a great effort on both offense and defense. After dishing out the headlines, the crew recaps everything, starting with standout performances from players like Mark Mitchell and Jeremy Roach. Of course, we have to eat the veggies with some of the things to improve, and then we end with a new thing that we think we’re going to keep: favorite play of the game. Each of us nominate a couple of plays that we thought were worth the honors. After the break, we preview Friday’s matchup with the USC Upstate Spartans. With the season just underway, there’s not a lot of stats to review for the Spartans, but we dig deep to bring you the best analysis of what we can expect on Friday evening. We have a lot coming up this week, including a great interview with Duke Women’s Basketball head coach Kara Lawson! Look out for that later this week. Duke Basketball Roundup - #459 - Lessons learned from Kansas defeating Duke
play

11/17/22 • 59 min

Duke may have lost in the Champions Classic to Kansas, but the Duke Basketball Report Podcast crew is really excited about how Duke looked in this contest. Obviously, they are raving about Kyle "Mr. Double-Double" Filipowski but also saw a lot to like from several other freshmen who are not playing like this is just their third game in a college uniform. And, though there was a lot to like despite the L, the guys also discuss the problems from this game, including some rather controversial decisions by the referees (cue up a good little rant from Donald and Jason). After the break, the DBR Podcast looks across the ACC to examine the problems some of our conference rivals are having and what it means for Duke if the rest of the ACC is struggling in the non-conference season. Duke Basketball Roundup - #572 - Bear Trap Nabs Baylor

This was a big win... a win Duke needed. The Blue Devils victory over Baylor was a crucial non-conference game for a team that didn't perform as expected over the first month of the season. But Duke has been a whole different animal lately and Baylor bore the brunt of it. The Duke Basketball Roundup does a deep dive into all the ways this edition of Duke is different from the version we saw a few weeks ago. The perimeter trio of Roach, Foster, and McCain were outstanding on both ends of the floor in this one. And we have a special shout out to Ryan Young, who had crucial minutes late in the contest to seal the win.

Duke Basketball Roundup - #426 - Bilas on Banchero’s NBA Future
play

06/08/22 • 40 min

We are back with Episode 426 of the DBR Podcast, and we begin a 5-part series on each of the Duke Blue Devils that hope to hear their names called in this month’s NBA Draft. For that, we call in Friend of the Podcast and ESPN analyst Jay Bilas to begin our series with Paolo Banchero! However, before we start on the series, we discuss the news yesterday of the hiring of Rachel Baker, who will serve in a new role as General Manger of Duke Men’s Basketball. We discuss the role and how Baker will help the entire program set itself up to be a leader in the arena of NIL opportunities. It also helps the program to adapt to the times quickly as we move into a new era of college basketball. After the break, Bilas joins us to discuss Paolo Banchero. We discuss the strengths and weaknesses of his game, why he’s so highly regarded as one of the top 3 prospects in the draft, and what he improved on in college to give him this opportunity to be a star at the next level. While we are fairly confident that Banchero will end up with the Houston Rockets as the 3rd pick in the draft, we do a bit of Over/Under on his draft slot to close out the show. We will be back this weekend with the second player in our NBA Draft preview series, which will be A.J. Griffin. Until then, definitely let us know your thoughts at DBR Podcast at Gmail dot com! Duke Basketball Roundup - #556 - First Loss! What Happened Against Arizona?
play

11/11/23 • 56 min

The Duke Basketball Roundup takes a deep dive into the good and the bad from the Blue Devils' heavyweight matchup with the Arizona Wildcats. It was a tough, back-and-forth battle that put several Duke weaknesses on stark display. The starters suffered from poor shooting early and Arizona really dominated the boards, especially in the first half. When Duke turned to what was expected to be a deep bench, the guys who came in failed to provide a meaningful lift. But, nothing we saw rises to the level of an unfixable problem. The big question for Duke moving forward is, will they learn from this game and transform into a better team?

Duke Basketball Roundup - DBR Bites #27 - Silencing the Screaming Eagles
play

We’re back with a new DBR Bites Episode 27 as we preview Duke’s Black Friday game against Southern Indiana!

The Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles come to Cameron on Friday night in the finale of the Blue Devil Challenge, and Duke wants to knock off the Thanksgiving food coma with a good showing. Jason and Donald give you a thorough breakdown of what to expect from Southern Indiana, from what they do well to where Duke can take advantage. This is a chance for Duke to get out and run, but they want to take care of the basketball and move it around to get good shots. Duke Basketball Roundup - #573 - Duke Football wins twice and FSU sues
play

12/26/23 • 47 min

We’re back after the Christmas holiday to recap a couple of big Duke Football wins as well as the future of the ACC on Episode 573!

Duke Football won the Birmingham Bowl 17-10 last Saturday, and Donald and Jason recap the big win for the Blue Devils. Donald was there and gives some insight as to how everything was down in Alabama. Both of them comment on how awesome it was to see the team win and commend Trooper Taylor and the rest of the coaching staff and players for keeping it all together for one last run this season.

The conversation shifts to next season, as new head coach Manny Diaz secured his first huge recruiting win with the transfer of Maalik Murphy from the Texas Longhorns to Duke. We marvel at how big of a get that is for Duke Football and what Murphy can bring to Durham next season.

After the break, the Florida State Seminoles have officially sued the ACC to get out of the Grant of Rights deal, but not before the ACC sued first to keep them tied to the deal and the exit penalties should they decide to leave the conference. Luckily, Donald is an attorney in his normal life, and he read both of the complaints filed by FSU and the conference. He gives the breakdown on what each side is asking for in their various lawsuits and how this could affect the future of the ACC.

Duke Basketball Roundup - DBR Bites #26 - How to beat the Bison!
play

11/16/23 • 20 min

Let's be honest, Bucknell won't be as tough an opponent as Arizona or Michigan State but no one should be overlooked or dismissed so the Duke Basketball Roundup crew is here to look at what to expect from the Bison. They've got an excellent scorer on the wing who can rip down the nets with his 3 point stroke and a 7-footer on the inside who will present a challenge for Flip and the Duke big men. Have a listen to the podcast to hear a bit more about what Bucknell does well and where they struggle. And, as soon as the game is over don't forget to send your suggested headlines (alliteration and puns preferred) to DBRPodcast at gmail so the guys can read the best of your submission when they recap the game over the weekend.
