Estrogen is not only good for your brain, your bladder, and your bones, estrogen is also good for your blood vessels. And a lack of estrogen is one of the reasons, that heart disease spikes in women post menopause. Hormone therapy, if started within ten years of the menopause transition, appears to be heart protective. Today I am joined by Dr. Marla Mendelson, a cardiologist and associate professor of Medicine at the Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern University. She is also the former co-director of the Women’s Health research Institute. Dr. Mendelsohn has devoted her career to the evaluation and treatment of women’s cardiovascular health throughout the lifespan.

It’s no secret that there is a connection between menopause and hot flashes, but there are many other symptoms that are consequences of a lack of estrogen beyond night sweats, vaginal dryness, and bone loss. And joint pain is definitely on that list. So, what is the impact of menopause on arthritis and joint pain? Is estrogen therapy the answer?
In this episode I am joined by Dr. Stephanie Faubion, the Director of Mayo Clinic’s Center for Women’s Health, chair of the Department of Medicine at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, the medical director for The Menopause Society, and the author of The New Rules of Menopause: A Mayo Clinic guide to perimenopause and beyond

We discuss:
  • The relationship between JOINT ACHES and ESTROGEN
  • If it is the CARTILEDGE, BONE, or BOTH that appears to be impacted by the loss of estrogen
  • Why so many women are diagnosed with FIBROMYALGIA at the time of menopause
  • Why SLEEP APNEA also increases in Menopause and contributes to fatigue
  • If HORMONE THERAPY should be prescribed to help achy joints and arthritis
  • The increased prevalence of CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME and FROZEN SHOULDER
  • If joint pain is an indication of OSTEOPOROSIS
  • If most DOCTORS are aware of the relationship between joint aches and estrogen
  • When joint aches are NOT RELATED to MENOPAUSE
  • The impact of estrogen therapy and JOINT REPLACEMENT
  • OTHER FACTORS that contribute to achy joints post-menopause and what can help
  • The importance of ERGONOMICS and joint pain

It used to be that the term “bioidentical hormone therapy” referred exclusively to compounded hormone products. But today, the term bioidentical includes FDA approved commercial products and compounded products. A legal loophole combined with aggressive marketing has resulted in women believing that compounded hormone creams and pellets not only work better but are safer than commercially produced products.
In this episode, Dr. Streicher discusses:
The following common MISCONCEPTIONS about compounded hormones:
  • Misconception #1 Compounded hormones are NATURAL but all commercial hormones are synthetic or made of horse urine
  • Misconception #2 The estrogen in compounded hormones is DIFFERENT from the estrogen in commercial pharmaceutical products
  • Misconception #3 Compounded hormones are SAFER than commercial hormones
  • Misconception #4 Compounded PROGESTERONE will PROTECT your uterine lining
  • Misconception #5 Compounded hormones undergo the same QUALITY CONTROL as commercial products
  • Misconception #6 Compounded HT is CUSTOMIZED based on your hormone levels
  • Misconception #7 PRESCRIBERS of compounded hormones are hormone experts
The Problem with PELLETS
When it is OK to prescribe a compounded hormone

While many women are aware that hormone therapy is good for the bones, it is usually thought of as a side benefit. You know, women take hormone therapy because they are flashing or can’t sleep and then are told, are told, by the way ..estrogen will also help prevent bone loss.
In the United States, there are 10 million women with OSTEOPOROSIS and 43 million women with OSTEOPENIA. Most of these women have no idea that they are at risk for a potentially life-changing or even fatal fracture and also have no idea that hormone therapy is a proven strategy to treat low bone mass and prevent osteoporosis. Today, I am joined by bone guru Dr. Kristi DeSapri to talk about the role of hormone therapy when it comes to low bone mass and osteoporosis.
In response to questions that came in on social media, we address:
  • Is hormone therapy preventive against further bone loss or will it also help build bone?
  • Is the same DOSE that prevents HOT FLASHES also going to protect your bones?
  • When it comes to bone health, does it matter if you use TRANSDERMAL or ORAL estrogen?
  • What about TESTOSTERONE?
  • Can you use hormone therapy instead of bone-building drugs?
  • Is it ever TOO LATE to start hormone therapy to help your bones?
  • And so much more...
