A "grind mentality" can be positive if its the mindset of working hard, consistently, and persevering through obstacles and setbacks. This can be a positive approach to content creation if it drives you to produce high-quality and engaging content on a regular basis.

However, if you adopt a "grind mentality" that prioritizes quantity over quality, or if you become so focused on consistently producing content that you burn out or neglect other aspects of your life, it can have negative consequences. It's important to maintain a healthy balance and not let your content creation goals consume you.

In general, it's better to focus on creating meaningful and valuable content that your audience will appreciate, rather than just churning out a high volume of content for the sake of it. Your audience is more likely to engage with and return to your content if they perceive it as high-quality and enjoyable, rather than just a grind.

Social media can be an important tool for increasing discoverability on Twitch, a live streaming platform for video games. Twitch streamers can use social media platforms such as Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook to promote their channels and interact with their audience. Social media can also be used to share highlights, schedule upcoming streams, and provide behind-the-scenes content, which can help attract new viewers to a streamer's channel. Additionally, being active on social media and engaging with other streamers and members of the gaming community can help build a streamer's personal brand and increase their visibility on Twitch.

Just because we need to use it does not mean we are not impacted by prolonged usage. The effects of social media on individuals can vary. Some studies have suggested that excessive use of social media can lead to negative effects such as increased feelings of loneliness, depression, and anxiety. However, other research has suggested that social media can have positive effects such as increased social connectedness and communication. It is important for individuals to use social media in moderation and to be aware of how it affects their mental and emotional well-being.

So while content creators need to use social media for discoverability and growth, we are still susceptible to the negative mental health impacts. But the problem we are going to address here is the business of social media, and it is probably worse than you think.

Down the Rabbit Hole - Hogwarts Legacy and Cyberbullying on Twitch and Social Media
play

02/09/23 • 37 min

J.K. Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter series, has been the subject of controversy in recent years due to her comments and tweets on transgender issues. In 2020, she received criticism for tweets she made about transgender women and for expressing her views on gender and biological sex. These views have been widely criticized as being transphobic and have resulted in a significant amount of backlash from the LGBTQ+ community and allies.

Many fans and organizations have taken issue with Rowling's views and have called for her to educate herself on the experiences of transgender individuals. Some have also called for a boycott of her work and for her to retract her statements. On the other hand, some people have come to her defense and have argued that her views are protected by free speech.

Regardless of one's personal opinions on the matter, it's clear that Rowling's comments have generated a significant amount of controversy and have sparked important discussions about trans rights and equality. It's important for individuals to engage in respectful and informed conversations on these topics, and to continue to work towards creating a more inclusive and accepting society for all.

And now this controversy has spilled over into the release of the Hogwarts Legacy video game. This has led to renewed protests on social media and even spawned a site, which at the time of this has been closed, that was set up to publicly out any Twitch streamer who played it. This led to many complaints of bullying of streamers.

Yes, cyber bullying is a problem on Twitch, just like it is on any other online platform. Online harassment, including cyber bullying, can take many forms such as hate speech, personal attacks, threats, and spreading false information. The anonymity of the internet can make it easier for some individuals to engage in such behavior, and the large, global audience of Twitch can amplify the impact of cyber bullying.

Twitch has policies in place to address cyber bullying and other forms of harassment, and they take reports of such behavior seriously. However, as with any large platform, it can be challenging to monitor and enforce these policies effectively. It's important for users to report instances of cyber bullying they encounter and for Twitch to continue to work on improving their anti-harassment measures to create a safe and respectful community for everyone.

Finding success in Streaming and Content Creation can be difficult. It is hard to know exactly what to do and how to correct things if they are not going the way you want. In this week's podcast, we talk about REVERSE GATEKEEPING which essentially means telling someone that they will succeed if they do exactly what you say. It's different from gatekeeping as you aren't withholding information, you are saying you are the only source of truth. It's also different from gaslighting which refers to a form of manipulation where an individual or group makes someone question their own memory, perception, or sanity.

Reverse Gatekeeping can be problematic for a few reasons:

  1. It implies that the person cannot succeed on their own, and that they need to rely on the advice giver for guidance. This can be demeaning and can undermine the person's confidence and self-efficacy.
  2. It can limit the person's creativity and critical thinking skills, as they may feel pressured to follow the advice exactly as given, rather than considering different options or coming up with their own solutions.
  3. It can lead to a lack of ownership and accountability for the person's actions and decisions. If they do not succeed, they may blame the advice giver, rather than taking responsibility for their own choices.
  4. It can create a dangerous dependency on the advice giver, and can be a form of manipulation or control.

It is important to give advice and guidance in a way that empowers the person to make their own decisions and take responsibility for the outcome, rather than giving a sense of command or control.

Down the Rabbit Hole - Should we stop supporting Big Twitch Streamers?
play

01/20/23 • 19 min

Do you think it is important to support and encourage streamers regardless of their current level of success?
TyfloRen and I discuss what a big streamer is, the type of support you can give them, if WE support big streamers, and what this all means.
Smaller streamers make up the vast majority of channels on Twitch and financial support make a lot of sense. Income is not consistent and a few dollars can go a long way toward improving their streams and quality of life. Larger streamers often have access to resources and opportunities that can help them achieve their goals, but that doesn't mean they don't face challenges or need support. Additionally, supporting successful people can help them continue to achieve and contribute to their communities, which can have a positive impact on others.

It is important to recognize that success can be defined differently for each individual, and that everyone's journey is unique.

Today, TyfloRen and Moorph talk about why streaming and content creation can feel overwhelming, and give some of their own strategies on how to deal with it because it is no secret that being a streamer on Twitch can be overwhelming, as it involves a lot of work and commitment. The pressure to consistently create and stream high-quality content, engage with viewers, and grow your audience can be stressful. Additionally, the pressure of maintaining a consistent streaming schedule and growing a community can make it hard to take time for self-care.

However, many successful streamers have found ways to manage the stress and make the most of their experience:

  1. Set realistic goals: Break your content creation and streaming schedule into manageable chunks and set specific, achievable goals for each session.
  2. Prioritize self-care: Make sure to take regular breaks, practice good sleep hygiene, exercise, and eat well to maintain your physical and mental health.
  3. Seek support: Connect with other content creators and streamers through online communities, or consider working with a therapist or counselor to talk through any feelings of overwhelm.
  4. Learn to say no: Avoid overcommitting yourself by learning to say no to opportunities or projects that don't align with your goals or that would cause undue stress.
  5. Organize your time: Use a calendar or planner to keep track of deadlines, meetings, and other commitments, and make sure to schedule in time for relaxation and fun.
  6. Take time for yourself: Make sure to take time for yourself and your interests outside of content creation and streaming. This will not only help you to recharge but also give you new ideas to bring back to your content.

Down the Rabbit Hole - KICK vs TWITCH: Detailed Comparison - Which is best for you?
play

04/09/23 • 28 min

Today we compare Kick vs Twitch to see which one is the best streaming platform based on universal categories. Yes, Kick is the new kid and still in Beta, but since they are declaring themselves a worthy successor already, its fair game.
For this comparison we are looking at 8 categories including; monetization, 3rd party tools, discoverability, analytics, technical features, growth, rules, viewership, and engagement.
If you are thinking of platforms overall, here is a good list of things to keep in mind when making your decision:

  1. Platform and games: Look for the platform that offers the games you are interested in streaming. Some platforms specialize in certain games or genres, so make sure the platform has the games you want to stream.
  2. Streaming quality: Consider the quality of the streaming experience. A good live game streaming site should offer high-quality video and audio with minimal buffering.
  3. Community and engagement: Check the site's community and engagement features. A good live game streaming site should have a community of users who are engaged and actively participating in chat and other interactions.
  4. User interface: Consider how easy it is to use the site. A good user interface should be intuitive and easy to navigate.
  5. Pricing and monetization: Look at the pricing plans for each site and consider whether the cost is reasonable for the features and services provided. Some sites offer monetization options, such as donations or sponsorships, so consider those as well if you plan to monetize your streams.
  6. Device compatibility: Check if the site is compatible with the devices you use to stream. Some sites only work on specific devices or operating systems.
  7. Reputation and safety: Research the site's reputation and safety measures. Look for sites that have a good reputation among the gaming community and that prioritize user safety and privacy.
