Bob Schreck
Dollar Bin Bandits
04/03/24 • 76 min
Another editorial powerhouse, Bob Schreck has been all over the comics industry for the better part of five decades! He started out organizing and running conventions for Creation Entertainment in the mid 70s, then worked in marketing for Marvel before taking the reins at Comico (with then-wife and past guest Diana Schutz as EIC). From there, it was on to Dark Horse, where Bob expanded from his marketing role into editorial, overseeing such titles as Frank Miller's Sin City, Art Adam's Monkeyman and O'Brien, and the influential anthology Dark Horse Presents. Soon after his Dark Horse stint, he co-founded Oni Press, where among other projects, brought filmmaker Kevin Smith into the comics world. Then it was on to DC, where Bob oversaw huge Batman storylines like Hush, The Dark Knight Strikes Again, and Batman: Year 100, as well as Green Lantern, Green Arrow, All-Star Superman, and Sweet Tooth (Vertigo). And he still wasn't done, working for IDW and Legendary Comics after that. But jeez, we've got to end this intro!
You can follow Bob on Facebook.

Mike Friedrich
Dollar Bin Bandits
11/09/22 • 33 min
In movies, there's Star Wars. In TV (but also movies), there's Star Trek. And in comics, there's Star*Reach. That highly influential independent comic book anthology was the brainchild of today's guest, Mike Friedrich. The forerunner of indie comics that proliferated in the 80s, Star*Reach published 18 issues in the mid 70s, and is fondly remembered for its envelope-pushing style. Mike was also a prolific writer for mainstream comics in the Silver Age. At DC, where he got his start under Julie Schwartz, Mike wrote for such titles as Challengers of the Unknown, Detective Comics, The Flash, and Teen Titans. At Marvel, he scripted Iron Man, Captain America, and Captain Marvel, among others, and helped introduce Thanos and Drax the Destroyer. The guy's a legit legend, ok? Listen up.

Richard Bruning
Dollar Bin Bandits
11/02/22 • 64 min
Writers and artists: we're always talking about them. But even though they're the primary movers in the creation of a comic book, they're not everything. Particularly overlooked is the design of the books, especially in physical form. Today's guest, Richard Bruning, knows all about design and how much it contributes to the comic book medium. After serving as editor-in-chief and art director for Capital Comics (overseeing Nexus, Badger, Whisper, and others), he moved to NYC to become design director at DC.
Among other accomplishments, Richard contributed to the design of Watchmen and Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, and oversaw the branding for Vertigo and DC's first line of graphic novels and collected editions. After a period working on commercial design projects, he returned to DC as a vice president and creative director, where he helped create the DC Spring logo in 2005. Now, he works with his wife (former Vertigo executive editor Karen Berger) on Berger Books, an imprint of Dark Horse Comics.

Alex Maleev
Dollar Bin Bandits
12/13/23 • 58 min
Alex Maleev doesn't do many interviews, preferring to let his work speak for him. And if you could illustrate like he can, you'd probably take the same approach. Most know Alex from his defining run with frequent collaborator Brian Michael Bendis (BMB) on Daredevil. But he had an interesting path to that project, and has only evolved after it. After moving to the U.S. from Bulgaria in 1995, he quickly got work on a succession of high-profile projects, including The Crow, storyboarding the Lost in Space movie, and contributing to Batman: No Man's Land. He first teamed with BMB on the Spawn spinoff Sam and Twitch, and they re-teamed many times after: from Daredevil and Spider-Woman to Moon Knight and their creator-owned Scarlet at Marvel's Icon imprint.
Now, the dynamic duo is back together for Masterpiece at Dark Horse Comics. The first issue is out today (12/13/23), so go get it! And if you want to keep up with Alex, check out maleev.com, or follow him on Instagram @alex_maleev or on X @alexmaleev.
