Doctor Who: We're All Stories in the End

Doctor Who: We're All Stories in the End

Iain Martin

We're all just stories in the end. It's as true for the Doctor as it is for any of us. If, like me, you’ve grown up reading Doctor Who books, then this is the podcast for you. It’s a celebration of the Target novelisations, the Virgin New Adventures, the BBC Eighth Doctor Adventures, the New Series Adventures, and a whole heap of standalones too. Welcome!

Enter a war-ravaged world of creeping terror with the gang from the Secret Library of St. John the Beheaded as we discuss Johnny Morris' 2002 EDA Anachrophobia. The Eighth Doctor, Fitz and Anji escape a struggling TARDIS but find themselves caught in a very localised time war...

There's a really enjoyable interview with DK, a new voice on the show, and an afterword from a VERY special guest.

One of the most fondly-regarded of the Virgin Doctor Who: New Adventures books (unless you're the distinctly homophobic fan I tried talking to about the books in Canterbury early in 1997. You were reading Cold Fusion, and you'd given up on the NA's because, and I quote, "it's all about how to get boyfriends now isn't it?")

Anyway, it's obviously a total classic. I hope you enjoy this fond tribute to Matt Jones' debut novel. Follow We're All Stories In the End on threads: I'm @seaoftranquilitylane

Jim Mortimore was, for my money at least, one of the best writers to contribute to the Virgin New Adventures, but let's be honest, his only Eighth Doctor Adventure, Beltempest, is a flawed diamond at best. It seems as if everyone has problems with it, and as you'll hear, they are usually the same problems. But I'm not here to summarise my own show, and you'll just have to listen to it.

Welcome to the latest episode of We're All Stories in the End, and this month's wilderness-era Doctor Who novel is 1993's New Adventure: Birthright by Nigel Robinson.

The Doctor has gone. Ace has vanished. The TARDIS is dying. Bernice is all alone. (For at least the first 109 pages...)

Iain -and Agent Orange- are joined by Dr. Matt Barber (which is probably an anagram of "Master") as well as Kevin, Dylan, David, James, Jason and Liam who all have much to say about this novel (and its importance in the history of Big Finish) and along the way we uncover a mystery we will call... The Grimwade Factor.

Aukon's Winky! The mighty Dylan Rees joins us to talk about Terrance Dicks' 1995 vampire novel Blood Harvest, a Virgin New Adventure. Owing to the show's simple format, we basically just talk about it for a bit. For those of you who aren't so invested in spin-off fiction from Doctor Who, our many other tangents include: Mugabe and Pertwee by the pool, craft beer, the alcoholic Time Lord they call the Drinker, Goth Opera, where Pratchett and Dicks intersect, the political resurrection of a former Castellan, Geoff Spandrell from Accounts, Terrance Dicks and the Chinese Take-away, personal trainers, imminent Christmas, Doctor Who annuals, Romana, what it would be like to have sex with John Prescott, the Queen's death, and the pilot of The West Wing. Basically Dylan is a very funny man and this is a really entertaining chat. And if you're still reading these notes, please subscribe to the electric sodcast. It's a sketch-comedy podcast which has nothing to do with time-travelling spacemen. Or books. Find us on threads, @seaoftranquilitylane

Join Iain and Harry (along with his former partner-in-nonsense Luke, just a homeless ex-podcaster now that WCCY is no more) as they discuss the four recent new episodes of television's Doctor Who: The Star Beast, Wild Blue Yonder, The Giggle, and The Church on Ruby Road, to prove a theory: that Doctor Who is divisive, that not everyone needs to enjoy every single story, and that none of our individual opinions matter much in the grand scheme of things and no-one should ever feel threatened or triggered just because someone else holds a different opinion concerning an episode, a book, an audio or an action figure from a daft old kids TV show.
