play

01/04/23 • 68 min

Happy 2023, everyone! This year, after 10 years of podcasting, Verity! is going to regenerate! Join Deb, Erika, Kat, Liz, Lynne, and Tansy as we all look back at the last 10 years and share some general hopes for the future! We also chat about the trailer for the Tennant-and-Tate 60th anniversary specials. Much excitement and many feels all around!

Yes, that's right, Verity! will be taking a hiatus and making some changes, so think of this ep as the speech at the end of "Survival", but with the knowledge that the show WILL come back again -- and a lot sooner than Doctor Who did in the 80s/90s!

Many many thanks for listening, whether you've been with us since 2013, picked up somewhere since then, or are joining us right now! We appreciate the community that has built itself up around us, and we're excited to regenerate into the next version of Verity! to keep bringing you thoughts and feelings about Doctor Who for a good long while to come!

Doctor Who: Verity! - Our First Repeat! - Episode 46 – Communication Breakdown
play

01/25/17 • 79 min

Because of the emotional ups and (mostly downs) of the last week in the world, the Verities did not have it in them to do a podcast--about love or anything else. Instead, we're releasing our first re-run. Join Deb and Erika as we give a short intro explaining why we've chosen to re-release this particular episode. At this time in history, we feel it's really important.

The conversation Deb talks about in the intro starts at 49:12, so feel free to skip to that if you only want to hear the truly relevant bit. We hope you enjoy!

As always, comments are welcome--especially messages of hope, perseverance, and love.

This week we do lots of talking about villains who don’t. Join Deb, Erika, Lynne, and Tansy as we discuss what makes silent villains so creepy and effective. We also discover just how many Moffat-baddies are non-talkers (or mostly non-talkers). And do stick around for a particularly interesting tangent about gender roles and power dynamics in communication. This Verity! ep gets positively analytical! Almost scholarly! Almost.

And of course, let us know who your favorite quiet killers are–or weigh in on the deeper debate about communication in general. Or both!

For this week we had the opportunity to talk to the delightful Sophie Aldred, and we couldn't make you wait for that--especially because her Kickstarter for Strangeness in Space still has a few days to go. Do check it out if you're a fan of sci-fi, comedy, and/or audio goodness! She chats to Deb about that fantastic project, her time as Ace (both on screen and in Big Finish), and what it's like attending conventions and interacting with fans. It's a wonderful conversation, and we hope you enjoy it as much as we have!

Doctor Who: Verity! - 108 - 1 New Companion & 2 Classic Stories
play

04/27/16 • 101 min

We are all over the map this week! Join Deb, Erika, Katrina, and Liz as we discuss all sorts of interesting Doctor Who goodness.

First, we dump our "happy thing" segment and break our no-news rule because the announcement of a new companion is a Big Deal! We're excited about having a new face in the TARDIS, but the level of excitement varies wildly between Verities.

Next, we continue our run through classic season 1 with "The Edge of Destruction". It's a fascinating set piece that delves into the characters of our first TARDIS team in a spooky and often disturbing way. Chillingly delightful!

Finally, we touch on our first missing story, "Marco Polo". There are oodles of ways to consume this one, and we all did it differently. We compare various methods and talk about the story itself. Opinions vary on this one even more than they do on the new companion.

Oh, and in addition to all that, we're doing another Verity! GIVEAWAY! If you need some cool fan merch, Redbubble is the place for you, and we're giving away a $25 gift certificate. To enter, just head over to the Giveaway Post and leave a comment before Friday, May 6th! (NOTE: If you're one of our amazing, intelligent, attractive Patreon supporters, you're entered automatically!)

As for the comments section here, let us know what you think of Bill, "The Edge of Destruction", "Marco Polo", your favorite Doctor Who comedy podcasts, and whatever else we touched on. We're all ears!

Doctor Who: Verity! - Extra! - Mark Gatiss, P.R.O.B.E.d
play

03/09/16 • 48 min

We went there. Join Deb, Erika, Lynne, and Tansy as we delve into the deep past of Mark Gatiss' scripted Doctor Who work for our "year of firsts". It may not be the tightest, flashiest DW-related production ever, but we manage to tease out some Gatissisms that recur later. We do our darnedest to stay positive! And even succeed to some extent.

Have you seen P.R.O.B.E. - The Zero Imperative? What did you think? Did it quench your need for Who in a time without it? Or did the all-star cast distract you too much to pay much attention to the spooky story?

Welcome to a one-of-a-kind episode of Verity! Join Erika and Liz as we try to figure out a way to salvage a recording session gone horribly wrong. (Well, if you consider having only two Verities horribly wrong. As it turned out, it worked pretty well if we do say so ourselves.) Liz had the bright idea to take questions from the listeners--practically in real time! So that's exactly what we did.

Huge thanks to the listeners who tweeted us questions and made this whole thing possible! If you have questions you'd like to hear us answer in the future, please leave them in the comments!

It's another old-school first! This time, it's the first episode directed by Fiona Cumming (though not her first association with Doctor Who), as well as the first Fifth Doctor episode. There's A Lot of fun to be had. And yes, sometimes there's a quote so good you just have to give up on shoehorning the DW ep title into the podcast ep title.

What do you think about "Castrovalva"? Do you love the script and direction and acting and everything else all the time? Or did you get bored with the tromping through the forest? Let us know in the comments!

...Or as Deb so aptly put it on the Verity! spreadsheet: "Hey you! What are you doing in my TARDIS?" Join Erika, Deb, Liz, and Lynne as we talk about how the companions end up with the Doctor in the first place. There are lots of different ways and reasons folks end up aboard the TARDIS. Some do it on purpose, some are complete accidents. Some seem to have fallen out of favor in the new series, and we wish they'd make a comeback!

What kinds of companion arrivals are your favorite? Let us know in the comments!

Once again, we bring you a Gallifrey One-based Verity! that we recorded while in the same room! Join Deb, Erika, Katrina, and Liz as we giggle over convention fun and revel in the rare experience of recording face-to-face. This year's Gally saw many of the Verities on stage (interviewing!), on panels (being erudite and awesome!), and wandering the lobby and halls of the LAX Marriott (having a lovely time!).

In addition, Deb has a great interview with director Rachel Talalay, who was a bit of a rockstar at this year's convention.
