Doctor Who: The Missing Episodes Podcast

“Beware of Greeks bearing gifts!” Unless, as it turns out on this occasion, the gift is comedian and sixties Doctor Who stalwart Toby Hadoke, all lovingly gift-wrapped and ready to talk.

It doesn’t take long to become apparent that Toby and the team are cheerleaders for the much neglected “The Myth Makers”. And there's plenty to say on the subject, from it's semi-historical originals to its status as the first full-blooded comedy in the Who ouvre. It's also the first Wiles-Tosh project, where bawdy high comedy and bloodstained tragedy go hand-in-hand. Does such a mix make for a successful Doctor Who story, or is it all too much? If you're unsure, open your mind and let Toby persuade you...

After the team have finished eulogising they put on their Missing Episode hats and turn their attention to the country that once seemed to offer the best hope for Myth Makers and its season 3 brethren: the much debated Sierra Leone. If you've ever been confused by the ongoing and rather twisty narrative of out-of-contract repeats, shelled TV stations and Morecambe & Wise hiding in a derelict cinema, their analysis should set you straight. On top of which, there may well be a rare update-ette from one of the top bods in the Missing Who field!

What's a Grecian urn? Who cares, the Missing Episodes Podcast is free, so what excuse do you have not to listen!

If you’re bored of Paul and Tim, Toby comes in at 2 minutes, 45 seconds.

Missing episodes stuff is discussed at around the 55 minute mark.

If you enjoy this podcast, we'd love it if you shared it on social media to help us find our audience! Tim is on Twitter @drwhopodcasters, Paul @mrpaulmorris and please do come and like our Facebook page.

This free podcast borrows snippets of music from “Marche, Les Structures Sonores” – Lasry Baschet. We lovingly pilfer original music cues by Humphry Searle from the BBC’s original production of The Myth Makers.

Doctor Who: The Missing Episodes Podcast - Episode 6 - Mission to the Unknown

Missing episode enthusiasts Paul and Tim think they've hit on a Varga-ood idea: tracking down lost TV signals in outer space... After they've tackled that thorny issue, they set about a more realistic goal: reviewing the Season 3 one-part story Mission to the Unknown.

Mission acts as a trailer for the forthcoming twelve-part epic “The Daleks’ Master Plan” - but does it do its job? Is the Doctor-less experiment successful in its own right? And can Paul and Tim keep track of three characters’ names in a 25 minute piece of television drama?

This time they are joined by Andrew Ireland from the University of Central Lancashire. The driving force behind the wonderful 2019 live action recreation of the story, Andrew brings his deep understanding of Mission to the team's discussion of the story, and adds a host of insights into the virtues of 1960’s TV production methods.

In 2019, Andrew also appeared on our good friend Richard Smith’s “Something Who” podcast and gave fascinating testimony to the production of the UCLAN project. We highly recommend not only revisiting this podcast first, but also Richard’s review of the story which features all manner of Delegatory delights with author Jac Rayner (plus a couple of voices which may sound familiar). They can be found here:

Three Varga-ood podcasts for the price of one! (Oh no, we've done that joke.)

Doctor Who: The Missing Episodes Podcast - Episode 8 - The Daleks' Master Plan (Part One)

It’s a much missed, long sought after “epic”, yes, The Missing Episodes Podcast is back from the junking pile. This is the first of two episodes looking at the twelve-part Season 3 story, “The Daleks’ Master Plan.”

In part one, Paul and Tim are joined by the brilliant Gav Rymill. Gav, a man of many talents, is well known for his work in Doctor Who related graphic design and for being one of the two men behind the phenomenally successful “Dalek 63:88.” Gav leads the team on a deep dive into the origins of the story, what might have been, what the heck was going on the with casting of companions and reveals, for perhaps the first time, whose nipples feature in DMP.

There’s a veritable Volcano of facts, more to chew on than at The Feast of Steven,
(sp) and despite the long recording session, we hope we avoided The Destruction of Rym-ill.

So welcome, delegates and please enjoy Gav’s wonderful insights into this mostly missing classic.

Gav’s latest book “The Dalek Combat Training Manual” can be found here.

Gav and Jon’s wonderful “Terry Nation Army” videos can be found here.

Jess Jurkovic’s “Dudley Simpson is Doctor Who” can be found here.

With thanks to Tim Jolly for his ears and to the wonderful Bea Garrido for her art, assistance and her patience.
