16 - Rethinking Justice for Sexual Assault
Do We Know Things?
06/22/20 • 57 min
Often when someone is victimized in some way, we hear cries for justice. In some cases, and for some people, the legal system will work for them. For many, many people, the criminal justice system does not feel just at all. While the problems with the system are pervasive and affect many people in negative ways, for this episode, I am focused on survivors of sexual assault and abuse. This is the third episode in the three-part series on sexual assault.
The way the legal system is designed absolutely does not work for survivors. Dealing with the police and lawyers can be a traumatizing nightmare. Even if the person committed the assault is punished in some way through the legal system, to me it doesn’t feel like justice if everyone involved is re-harmed during the process. On today’s episode, I want to talk about the problems with dealing with sexual assault in the current legal system, discuss alternatives through restorative justice, and think about what justice actually is. I am joined by restorative justice educator David Castro-Harris from Amplify RJ and a Mia Hunte, a circle keeper with Hidden Water NYC.

10 - COVID-19, Sex, & Relationships
Do We Know Things?
03/30/20 • 31 min
It seems like all anyone can talk about these days is the novel coronavirus, COVID-19. One way I thought I could add a voice of reason to the discussions about COVID-19 is to talk about some of the information about COVID-19, sex and relationships that I have seen circulating around on the internet. Like things about sex boosing your immune function. Spoiler alert, we don't actually know! I will also talk about New York City’s safer sex memo, and some research on relationships and on loneliness.
Before I dive into the research, I talk about studies on COVID-19 sex and relationships that you can participate in right now! And also Jeremy and I talk about our pandemic and social-isolation coping.

Periods: Why So Taboo?
Do We Know Things?
03/18/24 • 22 min
Aunt Flo, Shark Week, Time of the Month. What is your favourite euphemism to avoid saying the word menstruation? Menstruation happens to half of the population at some point in their lives, but it is taboo in many places. This taboo prevents us from talking openly about menstruation and the menstrual cycle because it is seen as icky and gross. Of all the topics related to sex, the menstrual cycle might be the most shrouded in mystery.
How much pain is normal during your period? Is PMS real? When during the cycle is pregnancy a risk? Can you answer these questions? Listen in to learn about things you might not know about the menstrual cycle.

Love is Blind and Birth Control is Complicated
Do We Know Things?
03/04/24 • 16 min
On the last episode of DWKT, I promised an episode on the menstrual cycle, but something urgent came up. That urgent matter was the birth control discussion on Love is Blind season 6. One of the couples decides not to have penis-vagina sex because they really, really don't want to get pregnant. At first I judged them, but then thanks to an Instagram post, I came around and realized I was a jerk. Listen as I talk about why we shouldn't judge them, comment on the horror that is sex ed and reproductive health in the U.S., and give a crash course on birth control.

The Coolidge Effect
Do We Know Things?
02/19/24 • 25 min
What the heck is the Coolidge Effect? Sex research nerds will be familiar with this term, but others might not. It is a specific sexual phenomenon named after an urban legend about U.S. President Calvin Coolidge. Sound odd? It is! And the researcher who named it that did it as a hoax. This episode will take us on an oddly detailed journey through rat sex research, examine our human biases about sex, and look at whether or not men need more sexual variety than women.

Embracing the Solo Life with Peter McGraw: DWKT on the Road
Do We Know Things?
01/15/24 • 44 min
Being single comes with a lot of stigma! We live in a world where being part of a couple is seen as #goals and anything outside of this, whether it be having multiple partners or choosing to be single come with societal judgment. For single folks, thankfully, there are people like Dr. Peter McGraw who hosts the podcast Solo: A Single Person's Guide to a Remarkable Life who shares the joys of being a solo. In this episode Peter will define what makes someone a solo vs. just single, tackle some myths about single life, and celebrate the awesomeness of solos.

Circumcision Redux
Do We Know Things?
06/07/22 • 28 min
On episode 53, I made the questionable choice to delve into the debates around circumcision. I asked for listener feedback, and boy did I get some!
On this episode, I am joined again by resident man, Matt Tunnacliffe and we will dig into some of the responses we got after the last episode. As expected, the responses were divided! We talk bias, science, and how many things we still don’t know.
