A New Runway and Airport Rail Link - Inside Melbourne Airport
01/10/23 • 21 min
Melbourne will become the biggest city in Australia by 2030, and with this comes added constraints on an already busy airport.
Melbourne will also subsequently overtake fierce rival Sydney. The city that Melbournians will tell you to steer well clear of.
A spotlight has been shone on infrastructure, especially in the transportation sector, through the added growth.
At the 151st IATA Slot Conference, held at the Melbourne Exhibition Center in the middle of November 2022, delegates from the aviation industry came from far and wide to discuss slots, future growth plans, technology and recovery from the pandemic, with Melbourne Airport being the host airport, it allowed them the opportunity to highlight growth plans in their city.
On the sidelines of the 151st IATA Slot Conference, I had the opportunity to sit down with Jim Parashos, the Chief of Aviation at Melbourne Airport, to discuss the COVID recovery, new airlines, future outlook and how necessary upcoming infrastructure will be for the airport, communities and travellers.
In addition, I was joined by Michael Cullen, SVP & Head of Airline Business Development at Melbourne Airport, to discuss all things Bonza, Australia's newest airline.

The Final Boeing 747, Alaska Retires A320 and Bonza Cleared To Fly!
The last 747 emerged from a painting in Portland. However, instead of sporting a retro livery representing that of RA001, the first 747 appeared with a standard Atlas Air livery featuring Apex Logistics decals. Why is this?
Alaska Airlines has marked the end of an era by retiring its final Airbus A320, a rapid retirement following previous fleet announcements. The airline had already retired its A319s and now only has 10 Airbus aircraft remaining in its fleet. How it acquired its Airbus aircraft is quite intriguing.
Bonza, Australia's newest airline, has secured approval from CASA to begin scheduled passenger flights to regional airports from the Sunshine Coast and soon Melbourne. The airline had been seeking its certificate of approval since 2022 and encountered several delays that forced it to adjust its commencement date. However, Tim Jordan, the airline's CEO, says that the airline should begin flying before the end of the month.
