Dirt Nap City - Who Was John D. Rockefeller?
play

08/24/23 • 61 min

When it comes to titans of industry, it is difficult to imagine someone more influential than John D Rockefeller. At one point he was the richest man in the world and held almost 3% of the American GDP. From a humble beginning, John was a hard worker who happened to be in the right place when oil was discovered in western Pennsylvania. His company, Standard Oil, became the predecessor to many famous oil and gasoline companies that are still going strong today.
A deeply religious man, John D Rockefeller was conflicted between his will to win at business and his desire to do good in the world. He was often criticized for his hard-ball business tactics, but did that mean he was an evil monopolist?
In this episode, we take a look at an American icon - from his youth as the son of a con man - to his life as the richest man in the world - to his pioneering techniques in the world of philanthropy.

If you remember a time before downloadable or streaming music, you might remember the (seemingly) amazing offer that Columbia House offered - 12 CDs, Records, Cassettes, 8-Tracks, etc for one penny (later 1 dollar). This was an early subscription model of business that raked in the big bucks for CBS records and was successful for many years. But how was it for the consumer? What was the "catch" to the end user?
In this episode of Dirt Nap City Dead Ends, Alex and Kelly revisit the Columbia House Record Club, how it worked and how it took advantage of young music fans who wanted to build a collection of recorded music.
So for all of you who ended up with music you didn't want and paid way too much for, tape that penny to the paper and listen up!

Dirt Nap City - Who Was Julia Child?
play

11/16/23 • 62 min

At the peak of her fame, Julia Child was one of the most famous television celebrities in the United States. She was the first cooking show super star, but she didn't learn to appreciate cuisine until later in life when she volunteered for the war effort during World War II. She met her husband Paul when she was in Sri Lanka and he really taught her to appreciate fine food, art and culture.
Julia Child fell in love with French cooking and attended the famous Cordon Bleu in Paris. This was during a time when professional cooking was dominated by men. From there she began teaching friends the French way of cooking and teamed up with some partners to write a French cookbook for Americans. Her big break came when she was invited to be a guest on WGBH, the Boston PBS affiliate. She broke the mold by cooking an omelet on the show and the phones at the station lit up. That was the start of her career on television.

Welcome to "Goldfish Gone Wild," the Dirt Nap City Dead End that dives headfirst into the absurd world of goldfish swallowing. We're talking about the most shocking stunts, and the downright fishy characters involved in this peculiar trend.

Your hosts, Kelly and Alex, are your quirky guides through this aquatic abyss. With a healthy dose of humor, we'll explore the science (or lack thereof), the safety concerns (or lack thereof), and the sheer lunacy behind this bizarre phenomenon. We'll rank the most creative goldfish swallowing stunts, discuss the potential health risks, and debate the ethics of using live animals for entertainment.

But it's not all about the fish. We'll also dive into the psychology behind why people are drawn to such outrageous challenges. Is it for fame, fortune, or just plain foolishness? We'll try to understand the minds of these goldfish-gulping daredevils.

Join us as we navigate the murky waters of this trend together. We promise plenty of laughs, a few cringe-worthy moments, and maybe even a goldfish-related fact or two. So grab your headphones, and let's get ready to swallow this dead end whole!

Dirt Nap City - What Was Shag Carpet? A Dirt Nap City Dead End
play

10/03/24 • 13 min

Welcome to Dirt Nap City, the podcast where we roll out the welcome mat, or in this case, the shag carpet. Join your hosts, Alex and Kelly as we delve into the world of one of the most divisive home decor choices of all time: shag carpeting.

Is it a cozy, retro haven or a dust-collecting monster? We’re here to explore both sides of the shag carpet spectrum. From its heyday in the 70s to its questionable resurgence in modern homes, we'll cover it all. We'll discuss the pros and cons, share listener stories, and maybe even attempt to build a fort out of shag carpet in the studio (don’t worry, we’ll clean up after ourselves).

On Dirt Nap City, we'll tackle serious topics like vacuum cleaner technology, the psychology of texture, and the environmental impact of synthetic fibers. But don’t worry, we’ll also have plenty of laughs as we share our personal shag carpet horror stories and discuss the finer points of lint-roller etiquette.

Whether you’re a die-hard shag enthusiast or someone who would rather walk barefoot on a gravel driveway, there’s something for everyone on Dirt Nap City. So, grab your favorite pair of fuzzy slippers and join us for a deep dive into the world of shag carpeting.

Dirt Nap City - Who Was P. T. Barnum?
play

09/07/23 • 60 min

P. T. Barnum was an American showman, businessman and politician remembered for promoting celebrated hoaxes (also called "humbugs") and founding the Barnum & Bailey Circus. He was also an author, publisher, politician, and philanthropist. While controversial by today's standards, much of what he did was ground-breaking in terms of promotion and public relations.
He promoted human curiosities such as the Fiji mermaid and General Tom Thumb. However, it was the circus business, begun when he was 60 years old, was the source of much of his enduring fame. He established "P.T. Barnum's Grand Traveling Museum, Menagerie, Caravan & Hippodrome" in 1870, a traveling circus, menagerie and museum of "freaks" that adopted many names over the years.
In this episode, Alex and Kelly explore whether his exploitation of people with disabilities was abhorrent or simply "show business" during that time. We also look at the way in which P. T. Barnum, despite being alive in the nineteenth century, shaped entertainment in the twenty-first century.

Betsy Ross is considered the mother of the American flag - the symbol of the United States. But did she really sew the American flag? In this episode we look at the woman who became a symbol of the American revolution and what actually happened during her life. We also talk about whether it's important to always be factually correct about historical figures, or if it's OK to let some legends continue even if they never actually happened. Betsy Ross my or may not have been the woman who designed and sewed the original American Flag, but she was definitely an interesting person and resident of Dirt Nap City!
