An Essential Spiritual Education

06/13/24 • 3 min
Sangharakshita revisits his time as a wandering 'Dharma Farer' in the India of the 1940s. The occasion for this colourful set of stories and related insights is the 60th anniversary of his decision to 'Go Forth' into the homeless life, in line with the oldest Buddhist traditions. Sangharakshita is in fine, thoughtful, at times even mischievous form as he heads into his 83rd year, and, as usual, is uncompromising in his vision of the spiritual life as a vital challenge to the comfortable mores of our times. From the talk Recollections and Reflections on My Going Forth given at the Western Buddhist Order International Men's Convention, 2007. ***

Taking Impermanence to Heart
Dharmabytes from free buddhist audio
01/22/24 • 3 min
True wisdom in the Buddhist sense is not book knowledge, but understanding how things really are. The Buddha was always pragmatic in his approach and sought to get straight to the root of suffering. His vision was embedded in conditioned co-production: awareness that things are always coming into being and passing away, and that there are many conditions in play together. Satyajyoti uses the metaphor of the ocean, with many waves arising and passing away, as a starting point for her reflections on the 3 lakshanas, the marks of conditioned existence.
Excerpted from the talk The Way Things Are, part of the series Total Transformation - Heart, Heart and Guts given at Sheffield Buddhist Centre, 2018. ***

Powerful Energies
Dharmabytes from free buddhist audio
12/28/23 • 3 min
Moksatara introduces the dakini, the tantric embodiment of what's possible when all of our energy is completely engaged, alive and flowing. These beings of limitless space have complete freedom of mind, fierce energy and a full emotional engagement with life. In order to meet the dakinis we must travel to where they dwell: the cremation grounds, where bodies are taken to be burnt. The deepest, darkest energies to be transformed are associated with fear. By deliberately plunging into crucial situations which mirror these burning grounds, old ways are forced to change and we are compelled to grow. Excerpted from the talk The Burning Ground given at Sheffield Buddhist Centre, 2019, as part of the series Tantra Now! ***

Looking for the Historical Buddha
Dharmabytes from free buddhist audio
12/14/23 • 4 min
Vishvapani traces his own relationship to the Buddha, from early family connections arising out of the turmoil of war to his experience of writing the book itself. In doing so he explores the tricky work of trying to engage with the imagination constrained and disciplined by the historical evidence. What emerges from his work with the Pali texts is a portrait of the Buddha and his world where it's impossible to miss the vital sense of a man questing for a coherent vision of reality. From the talk entitled Imagining Gautama given at the Cardiff Buddhist Centre, 2011, as part of the series Gautama Buddha on the occasion of launching of his book: 'Gautama Buddha: The Life and Teachings of the Awakened One' (Quercus, 2011). ***

Skullcup as Symbol of Transformation
Dharmabytes from free buddhist audio
10/30/23 • 4 min
Bodhinaga explores the myth of Padmasambhava arriving in Tibet, at the invitation of the King, to establish the Dharma at Samye. When he meets the King of Tibet, Padmasambhava refuses to bow. Then he transforms the demons of Tibet, getting them to help rather than oppose the construction of Samye Monastery. Bodhinaga asks us: What do we serve in our life? What are our inner demons? And how can we use their energy for the Dharma? From the talk Naming and Taming - Padmasambhava and the Feast of Transformation, the first part of the series: Padmasambhava - The Master for Troubled Times given at Padmaloka Retreat Centre, 2021. ***

Awareness Wisdom
Dharmabytes from free buddhist audio
03/20/23 • 2 min
Vajradevi speaks to a large gathering of Order Members and Mitras Training for Ordination under a big marque at the annual Great Gathering on the theme of the Satipatthana Sutta.
Reflecting on the theme of the weekend Vajradevi said: "When we’re mindful and present to what’s happening – both ‘internally’ and ‘externally’ – our responses become steady, wise, and confident. Whatever we’re doing, whether we’re meditating, working, communicating, or singing, becomes a vehicle to ‘grow’ awareness. Mindfulness becomes panoramic and we live with immediacy and creativity." Excerpted from the talk Pure Presence: The Basis For Seeing Clearly, part of the series Dancing with Pure Presence, given at the Great Gathering at Taraloka Retreat Centre, 2022. ***

Dwelling Independently, Not Clinging to Anything
Dharmabytes from free buddhist audio
12/26/22 • 3 min
There is always change, even when we are still, there is some sort of change happening. Prasadavati continues to explore the refrain from the Satipatthana Sutta. Today's focus is the core element "letting go of clinging" as being central to all mindfulness practice. Excerpted from the talk Letting Go of Clinging given at Taraloka Retreat Centre during a retreat for women training for ordination entitled on The Path to Insight, 2019. The full talk includes a mindful movement session to aid in recognizing where clinging arises in the body. ***

Clinging to Aspects of Practice Separates Us
Dharmabytes from free buddhist audio
12/19/22 • 4 min
Whatever we’re doing, whether we’re meditating, working, communicating, or singing, becomes a vehicle to ‘grow’ awareness. Mindfulness becomes panoramic and we live with immediacy and creativity. How do we relate to different aspects of our practice? How do we relate to the practice of others? Vajradevi encourages us to be on the lookout for attachment to views regarding our Dharma practice and the tendency to compare ourselves, furthering the divide between self and other. Excerpted from the talk Ways Out of Clinging and Grasping, part of the series The Great Gathering: Dancing with Pure Presence 2022 recorded at Taraloka Retreat Centre during a retreat for women training for ordination on the theme of the Satipatthana Sutta. ***

And how can the mysterious ‘third order of consciousness’ or Bodhicitta help us to transcend our preoccupation with ourselves?
