Stranding someone on a desert island and making them choose stuff...nah, this hasn't been done before! Here's to being original, now onwards to glory or mediocrity!
One guest...three games that have mattered to them during the course of their life...one game that scarred them (to burn for warmth), and one gaming character companion to share long moonlit walks along the beach and the occasional cuddle (for heat people, for heat).
It could be WEIRD, it could be WILD, and it WILL have crappy sound quality, but, at least it will be short!
To the island!
What is Desert Island Gamer about?
It's about gaming, and more importantly, the people who game. Those who might have voiced characters, those who might have appeared on a screen near you, and those who simply play because it's a joyful escape. Guests choose 3 games that have proved important in their lives, one game that thoroughly let them down (we burn that for heat on the desert island), and a gaming character with whom to spend an eternity of island life together. We also have a movie spin-off series - Desert Island Drive-In, an upcoming board game spin off - Desert Island Dice Rolls, and some off the cuff spoken articles on all aspects of gaming goodness.

Campfire Tales - The time Nintendo suddenly mattered.
Desert Island Gamer
12/07/24 • 5 min
What happens when a die-hard Sega fan takes a leap of faith into the world of Nintendo?
Join me as I briefly reminisce on how the Switch rekindled a long-lost passion for multiplayer mayhem and the simple joy of gathering loved ones around a screen. It's not just the sleek handheld mode that captivated me, but the nostalgic memories of split-screen chaos reminiscent of old-school Xbox LAN parties. Imagine the scene: Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros. bringing laughter and competition into my living room, bridging the gap between past gaming glories and modern innovations. This episode is a testament to how the Nintendo Switch became a pivotal turning point, redefining my relationship with Nintendo and reminding us all why these pixelated adventures hold such a special place in our hearts.

Desert Island Gamer - Gavin Hammon
Desert Island Gamer
12/05/24 • 18 min
On this episode we welcome the man of a million voices, or thereabouts, Gavin Hammon! This living legend has played roles in titles such as Oxenfree, Return to Monkey Island, Wayfinder, and Telltales Walking Dead series as the absolute legend that is KENNY!
Here we talked about some old games, some good games and one that was destined for the fire. Although it wasn't Destiny, Gavin quite enjoyed that game.
So tune in and let this absolute gent guide you through some of his own gaming ups and downs.
PS. A little side note that I felt I had to add as it says a lot about the human that is Gavin Hammon. After recording we chatted for a while and I mentioned that Kenny was my daughter's all-time favourite gaming character. A few moments after we ended the call a message landed on my phone. A message for my daughter from Kenny (Okay, it was Gavin playing Kenny, but you know). It made her year, and was just a magical thing for him to do.

Desert Island Gamer - Kiwi in Japan
Desert Island Gamer
12/03/24 • 24 min
Kiwi in Japan, aka Laurie is a New Zealander who left his homeland to live and work in Japan as an English teacher on the Jet program. He is also a wonderfully wholesome, big-hearted, life-affirming content creator.
With a combination of IRL tours of Japanese hot spots, more sushi restaurants than seems feasibly possible, and brilliant gaming live streams, he is a creator who never fails to deliver.
He also once went viral for chasing a spider the size of Godzilla...almost.
We talked retro gaming, Stardew Valley, the occasionally toxic online space, how one game really let him down, and how his Mum used to fight Zelda boss battles for him. Oh, and of course we discussed the mammoth spider.
Enjoy!

Podcast Q&A
Why did you start this show?
The show started as a means for like-minded nerd-infused folk to chat about the stuff that gets the blood pumping...you know, like games and movies! It is a passion project that comes from a place where the recording process and the connection with guests is the driver.
What do you hope listeners gain from listening to your show?
Entertainment, moments of saying 'Yeah, great choice!' or 'No way, that game is terrible, what are you thinking?' Maybe some cool insights into fellow gamers' lives and the things that got them hooked. And over time, a resilience to my own dour northern accent...over time.
Which episode should someone start with?
Dive in with one of the interview pods. Any of the Desert Island Gamer or Desert Island Drive-In ones. Atticus Shaffer was great value and chose a super controversial game to burn for heat, Kiwi in Japan was just a joyful human, and most recently, Richard Bazley gave great insight into his journey to becoming a Disney animator and live-action film director. But hey, diving in anywhere would make me eternally grateful.
Which have been your favourite episodes so far?
I loved every interview pod equally, but a recent recording with Twitch streamer MrSteJ was a total blast! We talked retro games and films and dug into his own ongoing Twitch adventures.
Which episode are you most proud of?
Usually, the ones where I talk less and listen more. I'm learning to sit back.
What is your vision for your show?
To keep enjoying the process from recording to editing, and hopefully giving people a little enjoyable escape from time to time.
What is your favourite other podcast that isn't yours?
Easy. Dungeons and Daddies all the way! Pure unhinged brilliance that never fails to make me laugh.
How did you come up with the name for your podcast?
By basically ripping off Desert Island discs! Or did they rip me off? I guess we'll never truly know.
Tell us a bit about yourself
I'm a Liverpool-born, Manchester-raised, Cornwall-dwelling mid-life crisis in human form. I have a strong nerd heart, a beautiful and beautifully patient wife, six adorable kids, and a collection of D20 dice that would make most adults blush. I believe The Goonies is the greatest film ever made, and Home Alone is not just for Christmas. I'm a screenwriter with a couple of movies out in the wilds, and I refuse to ever accept that I have a face for radio and a voice for ear defenders.
