2023 saw TikTok skincare trends of skin flooding and later, skin streaming take centrestage. What is the science behind this? Now, if you are a skincare minimalist, the great news is that these two concepts are actually synergistic—here’s my take adapted for teen skin.

First, some quick definitions.

Skin flooding involves layering skincare i.e. serum, lotion, cream, ointment ala K-beauty multi-step skincare routine style whereas the concept of skin streaming refers to just sticking to a “streamlined” as-needed philosophy for your daily regimen.

Practically speaking, these trends make no material impact on what dermatologists actually recommend, based on the core principles of:

1. Choosing efficient skincare actives i.e. cosmeceuticals backed by evidence based medicine

2. Not exposing your skin to unnecessary, multiple irritating actives, applicable in the context of acids such as AHAs, BHAs, retinols, retinoids which can cause skin sensitisation

3. Respecting the skin barrier overall

How do you carry out skin streaming?

That being said, I feel the concept of skin streaming is most relevant for those who are relatively new to complex skincare regimens and may be confused about where to begin in the first place.

Here is my cheat sheet for the 3 skin types dermatologists generally encounter:

1. Acne-prone, oily skin

2. Normal/combination skin

3. Dry/sensitive skin

Skin streaming must be applied in the context of knowledge of basic skin types. Take our skin type test to find out if you aren’t sure and receive personalised recommendations. https://drtwlderma.com/what-is-my-skin-type/

The main question to address in skin streaming is: how do you normalise the skin microenvironment? For purposes of this discussion, we will zoom in on the single most important product for each skin type.

5 Ways Using a Vision Board Can Improve Emotional Wellbeing

Vision boards are a visual compilation of images designed to help you manifest your goals. You may remember using corkboards as a student as a way to motivate yourself and keep track of your achievements. Turns out, the psychology behind this is backed by science—images help the brain recognise opportunities which primes one’s subconscious through a process known as “value-tagging.”

Creating a vision board can be a productive form of imagination therapy to heal the mind and soul. In this article I’ll take you through an exercise: how I use vision boards to create an oasis of wellbeing for myself—what I believe is the secret to inside-out beauty.

The Science Behind Vitamin C Serum Formulations

Dermatologist Talks: Science of Beauty

play

05/22/23 • 0 min

Flash Skin Tips #4 DIY SKINCARE? Think again.

The Science Behind Vitamin C Serum Formulations

Stability

L-ascorbic acid is the active molecule from raw vitamin C which works on skin. It is also highly unstable, meaning it gets oxidised rapidly upon exposure to environmental oxygen. Once it is oxidised, it is rendered useless. By default, all vitamin C serums are packaged in an amber glass bottle to minimise oxidation by light as well. The best vitamin C serum formulations get around this problem by:

Increasing the concentration of L-ascorbic acid to ensure there is still a sufficient amount that works on skin taking into account the oxidation process
Ensuring the companion ingredients have anti-oxidant properties i.e. green tea extracts can synergise and boost the effectiveness of L-ascorbic acid
Instead of L-ascorbic acid, vitamin C can be formulated as a salt known as sodium ascorbyl phosphate (SAP) which is highly stable and resistant to oxidation.

Beauty, a Witch Hunt: Self-loathing and hatred disguised

Dermatologist Talks: Science of Beauty

play

05/04/23 • 5 min

The Greeks considered beautiful women evil. In ancient China, the practice of feet-binding was pure torture, but also deemed a rite of passage for those who desired to be perceived beautiful...in the eyes of others.

In modern society, mean girls bully those deemed better looking than them. This smorgasbord reflects the reality of what beauty really means to the human race—a simmering cauldron of prejudice, pain and jealousy.

Does it? We much prefer for it to be buried with cobwebs, really. Not pretty.

This episode tries to make sense of historical prejudices that color our perception of beauty.

Skin Barrier Repair: Get Body Beautiful With Botanicals

Dermatologist Talks: Science of Beauty

play

04/27/23 • 6 min

The science of a body skincare routine

Phytoceramides are a rich source of natural lipids that mimic the skin barrier. In the last two decades, dermatologists have shifted their research focus in dry skin conditions such as eczema. From the allergy perspective to the current understanding of skin barrier deficiency, we have come a long way in uncovering how an intact stratum corneum does more than just serve as a physical barrier against the external environment and allergens. In fact, a healthy skin barrier plays host to a myriad of organisms we consider the microbiome, which is essential to healthy skin function. From the immune system to its ability to fight off oxidative stress, the entire skin ecosystem acts in concert for healthy, resilient skin.

This week’s dermatology flash briefing spotlights phytoceramides as the optimal skin barrier repair active.

The Science & Art of Skin Cycling

Dermatologist Talks: Science of Beauty

04/15/23 • 12 min

At the heart of skin cycling is the concept of the ecological system of skin. The skin isn't just a barrier that protects our organs from the external environment, it’s also an organism with a mind and habitat of its own. In this episode, I discuss the scientific approaches to the skin microclimate, microbiome and skin barrier.

The rich and beautiful have it all, don’t they? Celebrity suicides draw attention to pervasive mental health issues that are equally indiscriminate—plaguing the young and attractive—those regarded by society as the most successful.

Is it possible that the practice of cosmetic dermatology breeds the vicious cycle of insecurity in body dysmorphophobia rather than addressing it? In this podcast I share some of my reflections that led to my decision to leave the practice of cosmetic dermatology back in 2019.

Normative perfection does not exist. Does it?

The relationship between the material and the mental world was referred to by Gustav Fechner as the realm of psychophysics, also known as “die geistige Welt” in German. A literal translation to “spiritual universe”. As the pioneer of modern psychology, he proposed a set of metrics which could be used to statistically define the experience of beauty—also what makes one “fall in love”.

Contemporary models examining the psychology of beauty refer to it as an undefined aesthetic response. We debate that beauty must be universal since we prefer familiar objects, yet philosophers hypothesise that beauty must possess an inherent element of surprise. Psychologists also acknowledge that the experience of beauty requires an element of cognition—it’s also paradoxically ascribed to pleasure, experienced as a visceral sensation.

These diverse attributes are consistent with biological phenomena—complex, interactive processes that work towards a collective purpose.

In the age of AI, will we finally achieve perfection? Or is there an insidious force already working behind the scenes. Join me in this episode as I unravel the dangers of following the crowd, especially in the business of beauty.
