DeckTales Podcast
Sam Catling
Join former cruise ship entertainer Sammy Catling on a podcast like no other.
Delving into the best and worst experiences of crew from all walks of life, DeckTales is the best place to listen to true accounts from people during their time spent at sea! 🌊
Sam went on to write the comedic memoir 'Seems Like Smooth Sailing', which was published on the first day of lock-down at the start of the Covid 19 pandemic.
This was a bit of a slap in the face at first, because it was the first time since pre World War 2 that you couldn't book a cruise even if you wanted, and because of the deadly Corona virus, no-one particularly wanted to either. ⚓️
This provided Sam with plenty of food for thought, as it made him wonder how the cruise lines would handle the situation, and how they would look after their guests and crew.
After much back and forth drafting his second book,
Sam decided to put his writing on hold, and that a podcast would be the best way to get some clarity on a lot of what he had read and researched.
So with that, DeckTales was born! 🛳

Ep29: Fergus Ford - Videographer and Photographer
DeckTales Podcast
03/05/25 • 73 min
Fergus and I worked together well over a decade ago for a brief period of time.
He came aboard a ship I was working on as a videographer, and we became fast friends as Fergus is definitely good people.
Instantly likeable, effortlessly cool, in many ways he reminds me of myself which is probably why we got on so well.
Fergus reminded me of the time we and a few others formed a virile boyband, told me how he met the woman who brought him into the world whilst on an excursion, and revealed some of the questionable practices he was taught when disposing of certain photo lab chemicals.

Ep7: Andrew Gove - Former Greatest Photographer on the 7 Seas
DeckTales Podcast
05/29/24 • 78 min
Former ship photographer Andrew was one of (if not) my best friends on the Thompson Destiny back in 2006.
We've stayed in touch now and again, but this was the first time we re-lived the past in all it's glory, and I even learnt the true nature behind his abrupt dismissal all those years ago.
Andrew can talk for South Africa, so I had to cut him down from 17 hours to just under an hour 20 minutes, making his the longest episode so far.
A lot of laughs in this one.
Enjoy!

Jayne used to be my ACD (Assistant Cruise Director) for a brief spell many moons ago, and so it was great having a chance to catch up with her to see what she's been up to over the years, and what some of her most memorable moments were from that time.
She has gone on to raise two twin boys, and now works in theatre providing her local community with a sumptuous serving of the arts
ABOUT THE HOST
Sam wrote the comedic memoir ‘Seems Like Smooth Sailing’ back in March 2020, and was published on the first day of lock-down at the start of the Covid 19 pandemic.
This was a bit of a slap in the face at first, because it was the first time since pre World War 2 that you couldn’t book to go on a cruise, and because of the deadly viral outbreak no-one particularly wanted to either.
This provided Sam with plenty of food for thought, as it made him wonder how the cruise lines would handle the situation, look after their guests and crew, and also get the business back on track.
After much back and forth drafting his second book detailing all his findings, Sam decided to put his writing on hold, as he thought a podcast would be the best way to get some clarity on a lot of what he had read and researched.
The idea developed into a show that became a deep dive into the industry like never before, and finally, DeckTales was born!

Ep1: Mark Taylor - Former Photographer
DeckTales Podcast
04/30/24 • 69 min
In this first episode of DeckTales I was talking with Mark Taylor, who worked as a cruise ship photographer in the early 90's before the digital age.
Once Mark had had enough of being at sea, he spent 23 years working as a forensic photographer for Scotland Yard, but he still has a soft spot for the cruise industry, and was happy to dive into the past and get nostalgic with me.
We met on set where we were both extras for a film about the IRA, in which we played a couple of Irish mourners on a tragically wet and gloomy day.
Mark and I had a chinwag about many things including cruise ships, podcasting, and then he graciously agreed to be my first guest on DeckTales.
He has a whole set of experiences unique from my own, and also came out with a few interesting facts and rumours that I'd not heard before.
At the time of writing, Mark has two books that are out there for sale.

Ep21: Jini Scoville - Former Band and Show-Team Vocalist
DeckTales Podcast
01/08/25 • 86 min
Jini worked as a show team member and band singer onboard ships for about a decade, and we worked together on one of my last contracts which was one of her first.
She now works in advertising, but does still dabble in the arts from time to time with her ship soul mate Sergio
It was so much fun to catch up with Jini after all these years, and because she was so kind to laugh at my jokes, I thought it’d be best to kick off the new season of DeckTales with her interview.
Jini talked about the parallels between ship life and reality TV, the lecherous types of inappropriate guests she encountered onboard, stichin’ an bitchin’, how she met her partner and much more!

JD worked on a ship with me during my first contract back in 2006, but his decade long career is a 50/50 split, between working in photography/videography and shore excursions.
In this episode you will learn how to lower your expectations when venturing out on a land booked trip, how to sleep through an onboard fire, and what happens after you hit an iceberg.
You may also learn a thing or two about the positives covid had on the industry, as well as 'where da food at'.
JD had his guard up during this episode, so it took a fair bit of inquisitive probing to get any decent stories out of him.
In fairness to JD, he knows all to well the dangers of antagonizing the industry, and I'll give him some tiny degree of credit, because last year we went for beers before I began working on DeckTales, and he wouldn't shut up about ship life!
So he could be considered an ember that sparked my creative ambitions.

Ep26: Mark Hawkins - Comedian, Cruise Director, Fleet Supervisor
DeckTales Podcast
02/12/25 • 82 min
Mark is one of those people I met back in the day only a couple of times, but I found him buried among my Facebook friends with mutual acquaintances throughout the cruise ship industry, and it was only after a short amount of time speaking with him, that all the memories I had of his comedy came flooding back to me.
Mark is one of the most pleasant, affable, well mannered people I've had the pleasure of speaking to on DeckTales, and his act isn't much of an act, because he is like genuinely like that in real life.
I got to hear all about how he started his journey as a comic, when he made the transition to cruise director, and how they basically made him Carnival's first ever fleet supervisor.
He's been with the company over a lengthy period of time, so he's seen them go through a lot of changes over the years, and it was a lot of fun finding out all about it.

Ep24: Mark Tiffin - Cargo and Cruise Ship Navigation Officer
DeckTales Podcast
01/29/25 • 84 min
Mark and I connected over social media, and after a bit of back and forth he agreed to be a guest on the show.
As he was the first person I've interviewed from the bridge, it was great to get an insight into what life as an officer is all about, and we discussed many things from his early days at Warsash Maritime academy, his long stint working on cargo ships, and how he eventually transitioned into cruises.
It was an informative and fun chat with Mark, and I'm happy that he's now working for a cruises line that he's more than satisfied with...as he told me his previous employer was not exactly treating him fairly.
Enjoy!

Ep25: Steff Mercedes - Commis II/Junior Chef
DeckTales Podcast
02/05/25 • 61 min
I connected with Steff through social media, whilst she was stranded ashore in her home country of the Dominican Republic, sandwiched between her first ever and second cruise ship contracts.
She is the first person from the galley I've had the pleasure of speaking to on DeckTales, and she filled me in on all things such as how she managed to get herself onboard, how her first experience went, what she made of ship dating life, how she coped with a wardrobe malfunction mid service and much more.
Enjoy!

Ep6: Archie Quevedo - From Laundry Department to Reception Desk
DeckTales Podcast
05/22/24 • 62 min
Originally from the Philippines and now living in South Africa with his family, Archie worked with me on two of my contracts back in the mid to late noughties.
He was the face of the ship in many ways as not only did he work on the reception desk, but he always carried a smile with him everywhere he went, making him one of the most popular crew members onboard the now deceased, Thompson Destiny.
Archie and I had lot's to catch up on, had a really lovely chat, and his career trajectory is one I wasn't even fully aware of.
