In September 1998, the U.S. was introduced to the franchise that would soon become a worldwide phenomenon: Pokémon. After only 18 months, Pokémon was everywhere--on TV, in car CD players, in school cafeterias, and on kids' backpacks and bedsheets. You couldn't walk 5 feet inside a Kmart and not see something with Pikachu's likeness on it. How did this come about? Why, all of a sudden, was every child aged 7-14 suddenly screaming for their parents in to buy them booster pack upon booster pack of Pokémon cards in the summer of 1999? It's been a few years since the last time we remixed Pokémon gyms, but a particular question from our 100th episode put us back in that mind space. Turns out most of us also have deep trauma related to our own experiences with college internships. Who knew? So this week, we're examining the horrific truths of Pokémon's one-note minibosses by asking, "Which gym leader would host the worst college internship?"

Matt explains the internship experience that at least 50% of interns have. Todd proves to us why a Communications degree is worth it. Oh, and Kyle gets sticky. Like, really sticky.

"Oh boy, here come those dang investors again. They just won't STOP asking us to pitch them new mashups of old videogames. And it's like their asks are getting more and more hacky and uninspired each time...like, this week they just screamed 'Make NPCs a protagonist!' and then sat there, nearly frozen in place." is what we wrote in our shownotes on May 4th of 2021. Well here we are fourteen months later and hot dog we're going again! This time we ask literally the exact same question as last time, "What NPC deserves to be the protagonist in their own game?

Kyle reflects on his Barista-Era and brings an old friend from Animal Crossing to the table. Matt picked one bit this week and boy does he lean into it. Andrew takes us all on a weird, horny adventure and, you guessed it, everyone disliked that.
