The first woman to have her voice recorded by the phonograph was no doubt some lady fascinated by Thomas Edison's original tin-foil invention. The first woman to achieve widespread acclaim as a professional recording star, however, was unquestionably Ada Jones. There is some proof that hers was one of the first women's voices successfully recorded for early commercial cylinders, but that is an incident rather unrelated to her great popularity later as the world’s "First Lady" of the phonograph

The Volta Laboratory was founded in 1880– with Charles Sumner Tainter and Alexander Graham Bell's cousin, Chichester Bell ..the two associates took Edison's tinfoil phonograph and modified it considerably to make it reproduce sound from wax instead of tinfoil. Thomas Edison may have invented the phonograph in 1877. But the fame bestowed on Edison for this invention was not due to its quality. ....

Barraud's most famous work, His Master's Voice, is one of the best-known commercial logos in the world, having inspired a music industry trademark depicting a Jack Russell Terrier named Nipper listening to his deceased master's voice from a gramophone
Compo it was one of only two Canadian record companies to survive the Great Depression. RCA Victor Records of Canada—formerly Berliner Gramophone—was the other (it is currently the oldest Canadian label that forms part of Sony Music Entertainment in Canada).
