DC Marketing Mixer

Dominic Corriveau

Being a leader is more than just being a manager. I've been a leader of teams for more than a decade, but I'm far from being great. However, I truly believe in anyone and everyone, they just need a good leader and coach to help. This podcast is for me to discuss what I've been doing to become a better leader, coach and mentor to marketers.

How do you structure your day to put you in the best possible situation to do your best work?

This system is important for everything we do. I know I have 20 tasks to do every day, plus at least a dozen more that will crop up throughout the day. In preparing for my day, putting myself in the best case scenario, will allow me to correctly respond to those tasks. I can be more measured and react the best way, without kneejerking myself into a bad mood.
It doesn’t have to be complicated, in fact its hopefully the exact opposite. What do you need to have a good day? Get up at a certain time? Have breakfast by when? Go for a walk before opening email? Planning lunch with friends before doing anything else? Emailing 3 people? Listening to music for 20 min.?
What do you need to do in order to have the right mind and to do your best work?

One of the most important pieces of advice I ever received was, "You can't manage the way people work." This is a quote I think about a lot, both for me as I work with other people and how people interact with me. Whether you are a leader of a team, or just working with others (both at a company or just with friends on projects), its important to keep in mind that our diversity is what makes us stronger. If you manage the way someone is working, you are forcing everyone to work the same and creating a monoculture.

DC Marketing Mixer - Everything is a Choice | Coaching & Leadership
play

My emotions are in constant flux right now. Day to day, hour to hour, my anxiety goes from 0 to 100 in an instant with wild swings without notice. This has to do with the news cycle, of course. But, its also this feeling that I should be doing more with the time that I have.

Should I be tackling more projects? Should my team be working on big, new initiatives now that we have time? Should I start that new YouTube series, begin that book idea, start live streaming on Twitch, doing 100 push-ups a day, take that super advanced Excel class...

The list goes on forever. Everything is a choice. Go this way or that, do this or that. The problem is always, did I make the right choice.

Yes, I’m still talking about personal brand. Before you skip, this one is an extremely personal message and insight into why I think personal brand is so important. My personal brand isn’t about what other people think; It’s about what I think when I see myself. It’s personal.

I’ve said before that the reason I make these videos, posts and more is to help me get better at being a leader and a person. This week’s message is a personal note to myself about why I make these videos, newsletters, podcasts and more. Personal branding, for me, is not about traditional branding. In marketing, we all know why brand is important. Brand is what people think and say when you’re not around. Some time ago my personal brand became important because I wanted to make sure that when I look in the mirror, the person looking back represents all the things I think are important – To me.

This goes for everything. The creative work I’m producing and what I’m putting into the public. My fashion. My work. My relationships. When I look in the mirror, am I doing the things I want to represent me? When I think of the things I’ve done, is that it impress others? Or did I do it for me?

I want that answer to always be I did it for me. So that when I look in the mirror, the man I see is the doing the work, the art, relationships I want to be looking back at me.

You might say, I’m doing it for the man in the mirror...

DC Marketing Mixer - Trust. Your. Instincts. | Leadership in Marketing
play

02/15/20 • 5 min

We’re all in the business of making data driven decisions. It’s all we hear from coworkers, our boss and the C-Suite. Something that often gets overlooked is our instincts. For some people, trusting their instincts comes natural. But, for others, its something we have to practice.

Before making a big decision, dig into your instincts. In this week’s Get Better Friday video I take a look at two ways you can investigate your instincts before making that big decision.

This comes from this great blog post by Scott Young.

How to Make Hard Life Decisions

This is part of my Get better Friday, all about being a better leader. Each piece is about me describing what I’ve been practicing to help me become a better leader and coach for my team, my career and my personal life.

DC Marketing Mixer - You're Not Falling Behind | Leadership & Coaching

Have you ever said this?

"I'm so far behind. I'm going to put in some extra time to get caught up."

We've all said this, In fact, you might be at the end of one of those weeks. The truth is, there's no such thing as "catching up". Its a myth we tell ourselves as if there's some sort of ending to our work. Once you embrace that our work is endless, it will relieve you of stress and anxiety.

We put so much pressure on ourselves to do everything, always willing to take on more and more and more. But, the real secret to effectiveness is to work one step at a time. Every project is a chance for us to do our best work and if we focus on what matters, not what's urgent, we'll be happier and healthier.

If the intention isn't there, then maybe its not right for you. Save your energy for the people, moments and opportunities you really want.

DC Marketing Mixer - 3 Ways to Respond to Stress | Leadership & Coaching
play

07/02/20 • 6 min

Last time I focused on telling the truth and how letting the truth be free can also set you free. In that message, I mentioned I had to overcome a personal realization and stop blaming myself for being laid off. This week, more info on how I did that and helped overcome that feeling that somehow being laid off was my fault.

For me this came down to 3 ways to respond to high stress situations. These are choices we make and our response is totally in our control. Its how we choose to respond that will determine our output. We have three choices:

1. Remain the victim.

2. Look for new perspectives.

3. Find the opportunity for change. Learn from the past, take care of the present, prepare for the future.

DC Marketing Mixer - Tell The Truth | Leadership & Coaching
play

06/24/20 • 5 min

"What's the story I'm telling myself and what's the story I'm telling other people."

Are you saying to others (and your boss) you're happy with your job? But in your head you're telling yourself you're better and deserve better?

Why the gap? Why are you telling one person something different than what you know to be true.

*****

See this in video form, with full captions.

https://www.youtube.com/dominiccorriveau

*****

When I was out of work, telling myself I'm a loser and unskilled, scared every day. I let it become personal for me. They must have laid me off because I wasn't good at my job, because they knew I was a fraud. Nearly 10 years ago when I first got into marketing, I dealt with an overwhelming amount of imposter syndrome. When I got laid off, all those feelings came roaring back.

But, the story I'm telling other people is that I was prepared and will be okay. I was telling people what I thought they wanted to hear, instead of telling the truth. I thought they wanted to hear that I was okay and that I was prepared. Why? Cause that's what people think of me! I wanted to keep that "brand" going. I'm always prepared, confident, and strategic. I didn't want them to think being laid off caught me off guard.

In reality, people wanted to help me. If I was willing to be honest, put out there what was bothering me and where I needed help, there were dozens of people who were ready and willing. Instead, I kept it all to myself and gave two versions of the same story. One, the truth. The other, the reality I wanted desperately.

So, what is it that you're telling other people that is different than what you're telling yourself? Is it about your job? Your life? Your significant other?

An example of this are the times when we're self-deprecating. When we put together an amazing slide deck, ready and proud of the work we accomplished. Then, in the meeting tell the group, "Sorry for the slides, I know they're not the best, but they'll do for today." Why are we telling others something we don't believe?

Maybe, we should just tell the truth.

Late last week I caught a link in one of my favorite newsletters ( 10 Things by Luke Leighfield ) to a poem titled "How to Be Perfect" by Ron Padgett. There was one particular line that really stuck with me, I'm still thinking about it today.

"Imagine what you would like to see happen, and then don't do anything to make it impossible."

This made me think of another line I'm fond of sharing, "Every time you say yes to something, you're saying no to something else."

What have I been saying yes to that is making it impossible to reach my goals? My things are urgent to others and I'm allowing those to use up my precious time to accomplish what is important to me?

In this Get Better Friday video I discuss that exact topic. To be honest, I don't have a great answer for myself, other than knowing I'm going to have to have hard conversations with people... Soon.
