SWING GAMES: Georgia, Auburn and the 2017 SEC Championship that changed both programs forever
Dawgs Central
05/23/24 • 90 min
Welcome to Swing Games, a show about college football games that changed programs, careers and legacies... In Episode 1 we will analyze the 2017 SEC Championship Game...
The 2017 Georgia Bulldogs were riding high as they entered November undefeated and ranked atop the College Football Playoff rankings. The Dawgs had gotten over the Jacksonville speed bump with a 42-7 trouncing of the Florida Gators, and UGA fans were starting to believe that greater glory could lie down the road. Those dreams were left torn asunder when Kirby Smart's 9-0 team was embarrassed 40-17 on the road at Auburn in the first week of November. The game felt all too familiar- A Georgia team with lots to lose falling flat on a big stage.
Gus Malzhan's Auburn Tigers followed that performance with an emphatic victory over Alabama, and suddenly it looked like they might be on the verge of history. Auburn could become a two-loss team who had gotten so hot that it would force the CFP committee to ignore the loss column and put the Tigers into the 4-team field. All that stood in their way was a rematch with UGA in Atlanta. For the Bulldogs, avenging their only loss would put them back into the good graces of the committee and insure a playoff berth.
With both programs a win away from a CFP berth, the 2017 SEC Championship had historic stakes... It served as a CFP quarterfinal of sorts, and it also would give one program a firm hold on bragging rights in the Deep South's Oldest Rivalry.
An Auburn win would give Gus Malzhan two conference titles in four seasons. Arriving in Atlanta, he was now just 4 quarters away from finishing a monthlong journey from hot seat to the only man with two SEC titles during Nick Saban's tenure at Alabama. It would prove that a 2013 national title game appearance that was aided by lucky bounces was no fluke, and Auburn would be accepted as the SEC's second best program.
Georgia was no stranger to these types of moments. It felt like the Bulldogs had been one game away for the last 15 years. A UGA loss would have pundits saying that Kirby Smart's program was just "the same old Georgia," but with a younger and more enthusiastic presence on the sidelines. For Kirby Smart, a win would stamp him as the Classic City's version of the prodigal son. He had returned home to Athens from hated Alabama, but the hire was widely questioned by the national media. An 8-5 record in year one had made many doubters feel justified. Could he take his father's ring and put it on the Georgia fanbase's finger instead? A win over Auburn would announce himself as the most likely heir to his mentor's throne, and show that a whole lot can be fixed in just three weeks.
Graham Coffey is joined by Michael Cohen to talk about the events that put UGA and Auburn on a collision course in Atlanta, the ways UGA adjusted from game one to game two, and how one afternoon changed the trajectories of both programs for years to come.
