Maria Espejo is the author of the book titled, “Why Not You?”. Throughout her journey in overcoming trauma at such a young age, she has learned that the light you choose to see it in is what matters most. Instead of choosing to dwell over her past she decided to take control over her own life. She hopes that others will remember that only they can determine their own potential and no one else. In her free time, she enjoys practicing self care, all things personal development, and is working on her bachelor’s degree in Psychology.
Maria will be joining us as a keynote speaker for the upcoming Mental Health Matters Event!

Episode 10: Mental Health Monday- Addressing Early Childhood Trauma
Damn she is STRONG
10/04/21 • 23 min
Today, we will talk about Early Childhood Trauma! We will start by thinking about our family dynamics and seeing how that has impacted us throughout our lives. We want you to remember that your parent's actions had nothing to do with you but everything to do with what they were going through at the time. They more than likely did the best they can with what they knew to be true at that time. Ongoing therapy and self help CAN help us overcome any childhood trauma we experienced.
What causes childhood trauma?
- neglect
- loss of a parent
- serious childhood illness
- abuse
- a learning disability
- emotionally unavailable or anxious parents
- if your parents had their own unresolved childhood trauma
Some symptoms that unhealed childhood trauma can cause: depression, panic attacks, eating disorders, anxiety and chronic worry, relationship fears, low self esteem, people pleasing, social anxiety and frustration
"Sometimes you may feel overwhelmed by the past and that is okay. Any progress is better than trying too hard to reach perfection."

Episode 11: Identifying Past Traumas
Damn she is STRONG
10/06/21 • 20 min
On today's Warrior Wednesday we are talking all about identifying past traumas as we begin our healing journey! The past is not always in the past; we need to find we need to find what may still be active in our experience and impacting our current experience in terms of our relationships and mental health. Unresolved traumas lead to the compulsion to repeat them. Here is the R.A.I.N. method that we use to start identifying our past traumas.
R.A.I.N. by Dr. Jack Kornfield
- Recognize- pause and notice what you are feeling
- Accept/Acknowledge/Allow- whatever strong emotion you have in the moment
- Investigate- start to investigate your internal experience through the S.I.F.T method (sensations, images, feelings, thoughts) by Daniel Siegel
- Non-identification- don't let it define you, see it as just a memory
This strategy can apply to any of the traumas we will go over, start with the trauma having the biggest impact on you and use this strategy to start working through it.
"Heal your trauma so that you can't use it as an excuse to stay stuck in behavioral patterns that continue to hurt you."
