The half-halt is one of the most useful aids you have in your toolkit as a rider. However, many riders are not utilizing this subtle yet powerful communication to its full potential.
The half-halt should be one of the earliest things that riders learn to master when learning to ride their horse. It is a vital part of riding well and being able to perform accurate, balanced movements with your horse.
However, while many riders understand the concept of the half-halt in theory, unfortunately, the carrying out of the actual movement leaves a lot of room for improvement.
The half-halt is essentially a rein check or a postponement. You are asking your horse for his undivided attention and letting him know that something is about to happen.
When ridden correctly, the half-halt can be used to re-balance your horse, to ask him for his attention, prepare him for an upcoming movement, to ask for more self-carriage or collection, to steady or slow him down, to set up transitions and, in fact, should be sprinkled generously throughout your ride from start to finish.

What Makes A Good Walk
Daily Strides Podcast for Equestrians
02/23/15 • 13 min
Walking... Does your horse do it with a sense of purpose, or is he rather resembling a slowly rolling ball of jelly; going nowhere slowly? The problem many riders have is when we ask our horse to ‘walk on’, he becomes tense and stiff...
The walk, when it is a good walk, should be forward-moving, unrestricted, and natural. There should be a sense of purpose to it; evident in both horse and rider.
Unfortunately, as riders, we can often have a very negative influence over this gait, causing our horses to begin shuffling rather than walking! Here's how you can begin to nurture what your horse naturally does in the walk, and create a good walk for both of you.

Establishing Flow in the Space Between Jumps
Daily Strides Podcast for Equestrians
05/30/22 • 11 min
Jumping is one of those things most riders love or hate. In my experience, their personal preferences depend on how well they can use the space between jumps. If every jumping track feels like a tug of war from start to finish, it’s easy to see how jumping itself won’t be all that enjoyable. The same applies if the rider feels like they are doing the work for both themselves and their very uninterested, laid-back, and uninspired horse!
One of the best ways to improve your jumping is to work on the space between jumps. This will improve the overall experience for both horse and rider...
But simply saying the space between jumps can sound a little overwhelming. After all, we really are only ‘jumping’ for a tiny amount of time. The rest is spent working inside of this ‘space’. I think there are a few key areas you can begin to improve, to help both you and your horse get more out of working over fences.

Fun can mean lots of different things to lots of different riders. And your idea of what is really fun can change as you develop and grow as a rider. I always encourage my riders to be intentional about including fun stuff in their plan or schedule with their horses.
So, as you plan out your weekly riding, see where you can include one or two activities that you are including with the simple intention of having fun and enjoying the time with your horse.
Now, again, notice how what may have been fun when you rode horses as a teenager, might not be as much fun anymore. Pay attention to your day-to-day activities with your horse. Anywhere you notice you are really just 'having fun', go deeper and see where it takes you.

Are You Ready for Training Your Horse?
Daily Strides Podcast for Equestrians
06/13/23 • 14 min
When it comes to being ready for training your horse, you probably fall into one of two categories. The first one is filled with riders who genuinely believe they can do anything. And that they’ll probably be successful. The second is the riders who really weigh up every pros and cons before making a decision. And they often second guess themselves or lack confidence in their abilities.
This is especially true when it comes to actually working with their horse. And the fear is that they will somehow ‘ruin’ or ‘untrain’ their horse.
You Are Already Training Your Horse! However, I think that it is important to remember that you are ALWAYS training your horse. Which really makes the question of it you’re ready for it, redundant! Each time you interact together, there is either the acceptance of the behaviour, or correction of the behaviour. This is training. So, if we assume for a second that you are, right now, already training your horse, what can you begin doing today to help you get better results?
This is the exact reason why, in riding schools or yards working with more inexperienced riders, the horses and ponies often need to be ‘re-tuned’. Basically, more experienced and knowledgeable riders will regularly ride that horse and make sure that the basic fundamentals of the training are still in place and present.
And this might be the very challenge, you’re experiencing now – you don’t have anyone to do the ‘re-tuning’ for you. It’s just you and your horse – and you’re doing all of the training.
And that can seem very daunting. But it is ‘doable’; if you are willing to follow a few simple guidelines that will help transform you from just a ‘rider’ (or a passenger), into your horse’s trainer. And I believe that your attitude to this is what really decides if you’re ready for training your horse – or not!

1201. Putting One Thing onto Autopilot in Your Riding This Month
Daily Strides Podcast for Equestrians
06/28/21 • 12 min
Have you ever wondered how some riders seem to effortlessly connect with their horse when riding? It genuinely seems like they are doing nothing in particular, and there is clearly an ongoing conversation, or magic, happening.
The secret to seemingly effortless riding is to begin, one by one putting a basic on autopilot - and then revisiting and upgrading them regularly
The basics in riding are all the seemingly small, but vitally important, things that are essential to developing as a rider. They are like the foundations.
Choosing a 'Basic on Autopilot' This MonthI think that there are a few key areas that you can begin looking at putting onto autopilot in your riding. Now, obviously, each of these topics is pretty sizeable and has many different facets to them; there are no 'quick wins' and 'one solution fit all' here.
-
- Following & Allowing with Your Seat
- Your Position & Posture
- Your Basic Aids
- Bending & Turning
- Trotting (transitions and what you do while trotting)
- Cantering (transitions and what you do while cantering)
If you look at any rider who is having a great, connected conversation with their horse, they are not worrying about any of these things... They are not continuously 'fixing' their position. Or trying to turn their horse. They are certainly not still trying to figure out basic trotting and canter.

Groundwork for Horses and Rhythm in Training
Daily Strides Podcast for Equestrians
10/10/22 • 15 min
Rhythm is genuinely one of those things that can seem so simple on the surface. And, don't get me wrong, rhythm is a fairly simple concept. However, when we begin applying it to horses and riding, it is truly eye-opening just how deep we can go with the idea. A little like groundwork for horses...
And, because rhythm is something we can approach from different perspectives and filters, the possibilities are pretty endless. So when we combine rhythm and groundwork for horses, we can really begin to develop and train. Both ourselves, and our horses.
When working with your horse using groundwork, you can actually begin to both 'see and feel' how important rhythm is.

How often do you dismount and honestly have no clue what you just spent the previous 30 minutes working on? If this is happening more often than you want to admit, you’re not alone. The good news is that planning can help completely change this.
The conversation between you and your horse begins with the conversation already ongoing in your head. Your conversation with yourself. Tapping into that conversation - and maybe guiding it in a different direction - can help you transform your riding.
Consistently doing this on an ongoing basis for 3 months has the potential to change everything in your riding.
It all starts with sit-in down and beginning to create ‘the plan’...
Before You Begin...Enthusiasm is great. In fact, it is one of my top values in life. However, sometimes it can backfire on us as riders. You see, often we want to achieve everything in a single day. And, when we are thinking about things from this positive and enthusiastic frame of mind, sure why not do it all in a day?!
Instead, I think you should start smaller with your ‘1-day goals’, and then set the bar a little higher for your ’12 week goals’.
Overwhelm is a real thing. And thinking too big in the short term is one of the top ways riders tend to bring this on themselves. Ironically enough, thinking this same way in the long term has the same effect. The whole ‘this is going to take forever’. It really doesn’t have to. Think bigger long term.
