Coach Bill Courtney is the founder of Classic American Hardwoods and he is the subject in the Oscar Award winning documentary Undefeated. In 2003, Bill began volunteering at Memphis’ inner city Manassas High School in an effort to turn its underperforming football team around. That same year, the team had 19 players with a dismal 4-95, 10-year record. In the 2008 & 2009 seasons, the team’s record improved to 18-2, with 75 players. The story inspired the Hollywood film—Undefeated—which won the 2012 Academy Award for Best Feature Length Documentary. In 2011, Bill was inducted into Bridge Builders for leadership in diversity, community, and justice. He was the 2012 recipient of the Liberty Bowl’s Harry Zinn Spirit of 1776 award for distinguished citizenship, recipient of the Carnival Memphis’ King’s award for outstanding achievement in Business and Industry, and the National Football Foundation and College Hall of fame Memphis chapter’s award winner for The distinguished American for Contribution to Amateur Athletics. Ken Ward is not only my dad, he is a husband, father of two, grandfather of seven and now a great-grandfather.

This is an episode that we both hope you enjoy. You will hear about his experiences as a child, the troubles he faced with his own dad and our relationship as father and son. There is some real raw emotion in this episode. So buckle up.

Ken still works a full-time job and has dedicated his life to doing his best as a provider to his family. He is super gifted building cars and and anything else around the house. He taught me a lot in both these areas.

He and my mom are about to celebrate 50 years of marriage. That is an amazing accomplishment for them!

Please let me know what you thought of the interview by leaving a rating, review and comment.

Welcome to a new episode of The Dad Up Podcast. I’m excited to share this amazing guest with you. Have you ever wondered what your last words would be to your kids? I, like most dads, have thought about what would happen to my family if something ever happened to me. What if something tragic happens to YOU? My guest today is Blake Brewer, and after you hear his story, I believe you will want to take action. Words have power, and it’s through your words, after you’re gone, that you can strengthen your family and help them carry on. So how do we do this? Well, that’s where my guest, Blake Brewer, comes in. Blake is on a mission to help one million dads and moms write at least one well-written, meaningful, lasting Legacy Letter to their children. One Legacy Letter can change a life. Can you imagine when a million dads and moms write theirs? Blake has a wonderful wife and loves being a father to his three children, all under eight. As he leads his family, he draws from many mentors but none more important than his late father, Larry Brewer. I hope, after you hear his story, you will want to jump in with both feet and write your own Legacy Letter. Please check out Blake’s website below to get started. Dad Up! Dad Up Podcast 150th Episode Special! This episode of Dad Up features two people that are very special to me, my two sons. Blake Ward has been considered “The Total Package” his entire life. He has always strived to be the best at everything he does. He not only graduated college in less than 4 years, but he has quickly excelled in his career as one of the youngest Business Development Coordinators for a health solutions company. Blake is one of the most driven young men on personal development that I have ever known. Brett Ward aka “Hollywood” recently transitioned from collegiate athlete to working toward his Sports Management degree from Grand Canyon University. He has a vision for his future and is already putting the pieces in place to fulfill this vision. Brett has a passion to help others and has always gone above and beyond to make those around him feel great. In this episode they answer some thought provoking questions about their lives and what having me as their father has been like. More importantly they share what I have taught them about fatherhood! I hope you enjoy this episode as much I did! Love these guys so much! Those that meet Justin Pickens and hear his back story always respond with similar statements; “I can’t believe you turned out the way you have” or, “What an overcomer”. Born to two loving parents who dealt with their own demons of mental illness and addiction, Justin’s childhood was riddled with poverty, dysfunction, and domestic abuse. Statistically speaking, Justin and his younger brother, Tommy, most likely should have followed in their parents' footsteps. However, despite their own personal short falls, Justin’s parents instilled positive attributes through support and high expectations that led Justin to success. Justin was the first member from his dad’s side of the family to graduate from college and has since earned two masters degrees. For the past 13 years, Justin has served as a teacher and coach for multiple sports. Currently, Justin has recently transitioned careers and works for Edward Jones as a financial advisor in training. Over the past 6 months, Justin has been working part-time for Streamline Books, a hybrid publishing company that helps others tell their stories. Working for Streamline, Justin found his way on to LinkedIn and has enjoyed sharing his own stories by creating content and posting on LinkedIn. Justin is married to his wife Kyndra and has a two year old son named Whit and a newborn girl named Gentry. They reside in Kansas City, Missouri. Multi-award-winning musician Mike Whitla is the wizard mastermind behind Howdytoons, known for its heavy metal-inspired “dinosaur rock” songs and animated videos for kids. There are now four YouTube channels under the Howdytoons brand, featuring work in English, Spanish, and Portuguese. Across the brand on YouTube, Howdytoons has had more than a BILLION views, with 10 million more added per month, and currently has more than a million subscribers. Mike’s wife, Lisa, died by suicide in 2019, leaving him a widower with two sons, now ages 19 and 16. Mike is trying to destigmatize suicide bereavement as well as grief stigma in general. Mike’s sons are musicians and his older son, Jake, is also a composer whose work is heard on the upcoming Howdytoons album, Dinosaurs and Monsters. Howdytoons content deals with an array of complex social issues such as belonging, loneliness, and loss. Mike Whitla believes that, rather than shying away from complicated or difficult issues, kids' content should boldly address complex emotional topics to help children and families deal with challenges in a caring and truthful way.
