EP18 - Nemesis (1992)
Cyberpunk Cinema
05/15/24 • 76 min
Welcome to Cyberpunk Cinema – the Definitive Dive into the Dark Future of Science Fiction. I am your host, Anthony La Pira, and I will be taking you on a cinematic journey through the sprawling cityscapes, the crippling datastorms, and the cybernetic implants that encompass all things Cyberpunk.
In this week’s episode, I will be breaking-down the 1992 cyberpunk action film, Nemesis – written and directed by Albert Pyun, starring Olivier Gruner, Tim Thomerson, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, Brion James, and Vincent Klyn.
Alex, a burned out L.A. cyborg cop, is forced by commissioner Farnsworth to find his former cyborg partner and lover Jared who’s about to deliver sensitive data to cyborg terrorists who wish to wage war against humans. Is he being played?
This film might be the most insane B-movie cyberpunk action film ever made. There are more bullets fired in this film than in any film I’ve seen. Albert Pyun, who we already went over with on Cyborg, returns to his favorite sub-genre and delivers some amazing thrills and action set-pieces. You just have to see it to believe it! Trust me, there are parts in this movie that you can’t unwatch! It’s a stunt spectacular!
So, do me a favor – it’s time to access your cranial jacks, boot up your Ono-Sendai Cyberspace 7, and slap on your damn mirror-shades. You know what time it is! Cyberpunk Cinema starts...now!

EP12 - The Running Man (1987)
Cyberpunk Cinema
03/27/24 • 83 min
Welcome to Cyberpunk Cinema – the Definitive Dive into the Dark Future of Science Fiction. I am your host, Anthony La Pira, and I will be taking you on a cinematic journey through the sprawling cityscapes, the crippling datastorms, and the cybernetic implants that encompass all things Cyberpunk.
In this week’s episode, I will be breaking-down the 1987 dystopian cyberpunk action film, The Running Man – directed by Paul Michael Glaser, written by Steven de Souza, based on the novel by Stephen King, and starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Maria Conchita Alonso, Yaphet Kotto, Jim Brown, Jesse THE BODY Ventura, and Richard Dawson.
In a dystopian America, a falsely convicted policeman gets his shot at freedom when he must forcibly participate in a TV game show where convicts, runners, must battle killers for their freedom.
This movie absolutely rocks! It’s one of Arnold’s better films that no one really talks about. The dystopian cyberpunk vibes are high on this bad boy, as Ben Richards, the Butcher of Bakersfield, must survive a rigged TV game show that has captured the hearts and minds of the future America of 2017. Chased by “stalkers”, the game show contestants can earn their freedom and get a pardon, if they don’t die first.

EP40 - Minority Report (2002)
Cyberpunk Cinema
02/11/25 • 76 min
Welcome to Cyberpunk Cinema – the Definitive Dive into the Dark Future of Science Fiction. I am your host, Anthony La Pira, and I will be taking you on a cinematic journey through the sprawling cityscapes, the crippling datastorms, and the cybernetic implants that encompass all things Cyberpunk.
In this week’s episode, I will be breaking-down the 2002 dystopian cyberpunk action thriller MINORITY REPORT – directed by Steven Spielberg; written by Scott Frank & Jon Cohen; based on the short-story by Philip K. Dick; starring Tom Cruise, Colin Farrell, Samantha Morton, Max von Sydow, and Neal McDonough.
John works with the PreCrime police which stop crimes before they take place, with the help of three “PreCogs” who can foresee crimes. Events ensue when John finds himself framed for a future murder.
Minority Report was a sci-fi action thriller that paired the biggest star in Hollywood (Tom Cruise) versus the newly anointed next biggest star (Colin Farrell) in a future dystopian world in which murders can be stopped before they happen. It was the rare Summer blockbuster tentpole cyberpunk movie. The film is one of Spielberg’s best and darkest entries, as it explores identity politics, ethical quandaries, and the limits of humanity’s grasp on reality.

EP13 - Demolition Man (1993)
Cyberpunk Cinema
04/03/24 • 70 min
Welcome to Cyberpunk Cinema – the Definitive Dive into the Dark Future of Science Fiction. I am your host, Anthony La Pira, and I will be taking you on a cinematic journey through the sprawling cityscapes, the crippling datastorms, and the cybernetic implants that encompass all things Cyberpunk.
In this week’s episode, I will be breaking-down the 1993 cyberpunk action/comedy film, Demolition Man – directed by Marco Brambilla, written by Peter Lenkov, Robert Reneau, and Daniel Waters; and starring Sylvester Stallone, Wesley Snipes, Sandra Bullock and Denis Leary.
A police officer is brought out of suspended animation in prison to pursue an old ultra-violent nemesis who is loose in a non-violent future society.
This movie is so much goddamn fun as it pairs two of the biggest stars of the era, Stallone and Snipes, as they battle each other across time. This the most 90-iest bombastic cyberpunk film of that period that is pure 100-percent running on adrenaline and creatine! You could hear the neck-veins pop out of Stallone chiseled body, and Snipes just unleashes his inner cartoon villain. And did I mention it’s also really fucking funny?

EP08 - The Terminator (1984)
Cyberpunk Cinema
02/28/24 • 79 min
Welcome back to CYBERPUNK CINEMA - the definitive dive into the dark future of science fiction. In this week's episode, I will be breaking down the 1984 cyberpunk thriller THE TERMINATOR (1984) - directed by James Cameron, and starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Linda Hamilton, and Michael Biehn.
A human soldier is sent from 2029 to 1984 to stop an almost indestructible cyborg killing machine, sent from the same year, which has been programmed to execute a young woman whose unborn son is the key to humanity's future salvation.
This is was probably the first CYBERPUNK film I ever saw - my older brother taped everything off HBO onto VHS, so we had an entire library of movies at our home - and THE TERMINATOR was always on - and I was obsessed. I practically memorized every line in this movie, every scene, and I was hungry for more...and I was only 7! A perfect age to watch a violent movie about humanity's extinction, to watch a cyborg hunt down and kill people, and of course, that infamous sex scene. Ahhhh...the 1980s, parental guidance was suggested, but it was never enforced!

EP36 - Trancers (1984)
Cyberpunk Cinema
12/11/24 • 68 min
Welcome to Cyberpunk Cinema – the Definitive Dive into the Dark Future of Science Fiction. I am your host, Anthony La Pira, and I will be taking you on a cinematic journey through the sprawling cityscapes, the crippling datastorms, and the cybernetic implants that encompass all things Cyberpunk.
In this week’s episode, I will be breaking-down the 1984 cyberpunk time-traveling B-Movie delight Trancers – directed by Charles Band; written by Danny Bilson & Paul De Meo; starring Tim Thomerson, Helen Hunt, Art LaFleur, Michael Stefani, Biff Manard, and Richard Herd.
A gruff bounty hunter travels back in time to 1980s Los Angeles to stop a twisted criminal who can transform people into zombie-like creatures.
Trancers is an excellent B-Movie Cyberpunk from the King of B-Movies himself, Charles Band. It launched a franchise that had six installments and created the character of Jack Deth led by Tim Thomerson’s awesome performance. It’s a blend of time travel and neo noir and it’s so much freakin’ fun. So, in the words of Jack Deth – “Dry hair’s for squids. Now come on. Let’s get outta here.”

EP07 - Total Recall (1990)
Cyberpunk Cinema
02/21/24 • 74 min
Welcome back to CYBERPUNK CINEMA - the definitive dive into the dark future of science fiction. In this week's episode, I will be breaking down the 1990 cyberpunk film TOTAL RECALL (1990) - directed by Paul Verhoeven and starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.
When a man goes in to have virtual vacation memories of the planet Mars implanted in his mind, an unexpected and harrowing series of events forces him to go the planet for real – or is he? TOTAL RECALL explores identity - who are we really? This movie absolutely rules! It is a colossal paranoid mindfuck thriller stuck inside an interplanetary chase movie. Come for the action, and stay for the thought-provoking questions as they linger in your mind like an implanted memory!

EP33 - Alien (1979)
Cyberpunk Cinema
10/29/24 • 74 min
Welcome to Cyberpunk Cinema – the Definitive Dive into the Dark Future of Science Fiction. I am your host, Anthony La Pira, and I will be taking you on a cinematic journey through the sprawling cityscapes, the crippling datastorms, and the cybernetic implants that encompass all things Cyberpunk.
In this week’s episode, I will be breaking-down the 1979 protopunk science-fiction horror masterpiece, Alien – directed by Ridley Scott; written by Dan O’Bannon; story by Dan O’Bannon & Ronald Shusett; starring Sigourney Weaver, Tom Skerritt, John Hurt, Veronica Cartwright, Harry Dean Stanton, Ian Holm, and Yaphet Kotto.
After investigating a mysterious transmission of unknown origin, the crew of a commercial spacecraft encounters a deadly lifeform.
Alien is the ultimate sci-fi horror mashup that revolutionized the two genres and created a pop-culture sensation. It has all the thematic elements of cyberpunk – MUTHER, the AI-computer that controls the ship and only parcels out information on the need-to-know basis to the expendable crew; ASH, the evil android that is jeopardizing the safety of the crew because he’s following orders from the Company – WEYLAND-YUTANI, the evil multi-national corporation that wants the xenomorph for their bio-weapons division – to the design of the bio-mechanical planetoid that pulses with xenomorphic dread. If cosmic horror is defined as “the terror of the unknowable and incomprehensible”, then ALIEN fits it like a glove.

EP14 - Akira (1988) & All Things Cyberpunk w/Mike Pecci
Cyberpunk Cinema
04/10/24 • 96 min
Welcome to Cyberpunk Cinema – the Definitive Dive into the Dark Future of Science Fiction. I am your host, Anthony La Pira, and I will be taking you on a cinematic journey through the sprawling cityscapes, the crippling datastorms, and the cybernetic implants that encompass all things Cyberpunk.
In this week’s episode, I will be breaking-down the 1988 cyberpunk classic anime film, Akira – written and directed by Katsuhiro Otomo, based on the legendary manga by Otomo.
A secret military project endangers Neo-Tokyo when it turns a biker gang member into a rampaging psychic psychopath who can only be stopped by a teenager, his gang of biker friends and a group of psychics.
This is the movie that started it all and introduced anime to mainstream Western audiences...and joining me today is my first guest on the podcast, none other than Mike Pecci. He is a filmmaker/podcaster out of LA and I've been listening to his excellent pod IN LOVE WITH THE PROCESS since 2020, plus he just released another pod on his network called RIGHT PLACE RIGHT TIME. I'm thrilled to have Mike on-board this episode as we not only break down AKIRA, but we also get deep into all things cyberpunk, as well as rants/tangents about - Saturday morning cartoons, comic books, Godzilla, AI, Algorithm, Midjourney, Shogun, and studio gatekeepers! Yep, so buckle up because it's going to be a fun ride!

EP37 - Max Headroom (1985)
Cyberpunk Cinema
12/30/24 • 57 min
Welcome to Cyberpunk Cinema – the Definitive Dive into the Dark Future of Science Fiction. I am your host, Anthony La Pira, and I will be taking you on a cinematic journey through the sprawling cityscapes, the crippling datastorms, and the cybernetic implants that encompass all things Cyberpunk.
In this week’s episode, I will be breaking-down the 1985 cyberpunk classic TV-Movie Max Headroom – directed by Annabel Jankel & Rocky Morton; written by Steve Roberts; starring Matt Frewer, Amanda Pays, Nickolas Grace, William Morgan Sheppard, Paul Spurrier, and Hilton McRae.
In the dystopic near future, a crusading TV reporter investigates news stories with the help of a wisecracking computer version of himself.
Max Headroom was a cyberpunk film set “20 minutes into the future” that explored the evils of post-capitalist corporatism, the dystopian bleak future society obsessed with media, the pessimism of mankind in a digital age, and the rise of avatars as a new way of life. It’s Blade Runner meets Network! Max Headroom was a prescient look at a near future that looks eerily like the world we live in now. Plus, Max Headroom himself became a pop-culture personality that lasted longer than it’s short-lived TV series. Tune into Channel 23, the “show that wants to know”, and let’s find out what exactly happened in Apartment 42 in the last 60 minutes.
