On this episode, I caught up with an old high school friend from Pine Crest, Heather Geronemus, who is now the Chairwoman for the annual Walk Like MADD & MADD Dash Fort Lauderdale 5K. She has dedicated the last several years of her life to the important cause of fighting drunk driving; and her efforts have taken her from south Florida to the halls of Washington D.C. Heather has earned achievement as a top fundraiser for Mothers Against Drunk Driving; but, her philanthropy doesn’t stop there. She has also extended herself to other organizations as well.

The topic of drunk driving is particularly poignant for this time of year, as drunk driving incidents tend to spike during the holidays. So, it was very important for me to have Heather on as a guest—especially now. She was gracious enough to talk about the personally tragedy that changed her life—losing her father, Robert, who was killed in 2009 by a drunk driver. She told his story, shared what that time was like for her, and walked through how she is changing such an extreme negative into such a powerful positive.

If you want to get more involved in charity work and philanthropy, better understand the epidemic of drunk driving or have been an offender of DUI, or just need the inspiration to get through your own rough time, this podcast will speak to you in particular. Heather also shares tips on how to get home safely, including peppering in some great conceptual themes that will get you thinking. (Hint: parents, you may want to write some of these down...!!)

Head to WalkLikeMADD.org/FortLauderdale and see how you can get involved, as a sponsor or participant. Her next event’s info is:Where: Huizenga Plaza 32 East Las Olas Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, FloridaWhen: 04/24/2016 @ 7:30 amBut, the time to create or sponsor a team and begin your fundraising is NOW!!

From a dream conceived to a life lived, Paul Varian is a clear case of following a passion and making a career out of it! When he was a kid, Paul told his folks that he wanted to grow up to catch fish--and, catch fish he does!

Splitting time between spear fishing and guiding reef tours during down times, Paul has figured out how to make his dream a reality.

He gets to spend every day in the salt and sun if the sea--catching every range of Florida fish. And, some of his catches are truly hell. Let's face it, some fish can be pretty badass, and when in the water, we're in their territory. Couple that with a water pressure environment our squishy human bodies weren't built for, and you have a recipe for potential disaster.

The Weather Channel capitalized on the high-seas drama of spear fishing last year with Catching Hell--and, Paul was cast as a star! Though a second season is currently on hold, watch out for any announcements on Facebook or WeatherChannel.com! (You can also find old episodes on Ora TV!)

Candice Hoyes is a classically trained jazz singer born in Jamaica, raised in Florida, and exploding onto the New York jazz scene. Equally elegant and strong, Candice’s voice is charismatic and intriguing; and, in her debut album, On a Turquoise Cloud, she sings like a melodic ribbon carefully woven through and dancing with the big band jazz instruments accompanying her.

Having known her since we were kids, it was always a privilege to see and hear Candice perform. Her voice is simply magnificent; but, catching up with her now was amazing! For her album, she didn’t just choose easy standards or even the most known songs from her muse, Duke Ellington. Nope... Not this Candice Hoyes! She did her research and found some rare Duke Ellington tracks that could express her musical journey in an innovative way. The album is complete in its offerings of a fully-executed concept, highly talented and accomplished instrumental accompaniments, and stunningly eclectic vocals. On this podcast, she talks about the experiences that developed her as an artist, her choices in developing her voice and album, and the adventures through the New York music scene.

She isn't just out of this world; Candice Hoyes is #?OnATurquoiseCloud! Be sure to check out her debut album on iTunes or Google Play!

Curve the Cube is Where Dreamers Become Doers - #18 – PODCASTING AND MULTIMEDIA – Adam Rymer, President of Nerdist – 2015-02-28
play

It's the PRESIDENT of Nerdist Industries, Adam Rymer, and I couldn’t have been more excited to talk to him!! He grew up down here in sunny south Florida, but has seen his career skyrocket—including making The Hollywood Reporter’s 2007 “Next Generation” list of the top 35 entertainment executives under the age of 35. Adam joined Nerdist a year ago and is positioned as one of the top cutting edge trend setters for this next phase of entertainment’s digital age.

On this podcast, Adam discusses the business strategies he’s employing to grow Nerdist from a podcast by Chris Hardwick, Matt Mira, and Jonah Ray, to a fully integrated and dynamic media enterprise. The details he shares for cross-branding, cross-marketing, and overall business mechanics are pure GOLD!!! Even better (for me, at least), he also gives great tips for building a podcast!!!

His career started out in management consulting; but, after a journey of soul-searching, Adam realized his passion was in entertainment. And, the rest is history! He is not only shifting the gears on multimedia trends, he’s exploring film production. (Check out his film The Rover, 2014.) If you are a business person, an entertainer, in marketing, a podcaster, or just have an overall interest in super cool people, this podcast is for you!

I am a HUGE fan of Nerdist. In fact, that podcast was my inspiration for starting Curve the Cube. So, I truly can’t thank Adam enough for doing it!!! Pine Crest Panthers for LIFE!!! Enjoy!

When vocalist Gregory Scot Dyer first sat to collaborate with guitarist and seasoned touring musician Ivan Alexander, the chemistry was undeniable and Chemradery was born! When I sat to talk to them for this podcast, that natural flow of friendship and collaborative, positive energy was obvious and very endearing. Greg and Ivan are equally enjoyed in the middle of a crowd while they command a big stage as they are simply conversing face-to-face. Their energy and presence draw you in and their music keeps you coming back for more!

Hear them share with us how they came together, what inspires their music, how they hustle through the scene of south Florida, and their future plans; it’s simply an episode not to be missed!!! Curve the Cube is Where Dreamers Become Doers - #33 – TRANSGENDER – Drew - 2015-06-20

#33 – TRANSGENDER – Drew - 2015-06-20

Curve the Cube is Where Dreamers Become Doers

06/29/15 • 103 min

My dear friend, Drew, opens up with me on this podcast about his journey as a female-to-male transgendered individual—the physical, financial, social, and emotional impact and struggles the transgender life brings. Simply speaking, it is not easy. Imagine all the rigors and stresses of everyday life compounded and magnified by the very body you are in being at odds with both your mind and society’s expectations. Every step out into the world to tackle those everyday tasks becomes an awkward dance of considerations: how you dress, how you act, who to talk to, etc...--all because your gender identity is more complex than the XX versus XY boxes we have been accustomed to.

The purpose of Curve the Cube is to inspire people to pursue their dreams by interviewing and picking the brains of those who are living their dreams. Typically, topics of the podcast stay within the realm of professional or hobby-like passions: owning a business, supporting yourself as an artist, etc... However, I can think of no dream pursuit that requires more literal blood, sweat, and tears than that of a transgender person trying to find their way into the right body and out of the shadows.

Most of us are very lucky. The journey into a body that physically matches the mind inside is usually accomplished for us in the privacy of a womb—without any effort on our part whatsoever. For some, though, that journey is public and arduous. I can’t thank my friend, Drew, for not only sharing his story, but also being so open and honest. He has asked to remain anonymous due to his professional pursuits, which is just an honest reflection that there is more understanding and acceptance to come from our society.

This is definitely the longest podcast episode thus far, though I tried to edit it down for time as much as possible. The message is just so important and involves so many elements I never before considered, that I wanted Drew’s story to be told as fully as I could. I encourage all to hear the whole episode!

For transgender resources, this page on GLAAD’s website is a good place to start. I hope we all end with compassion...

Zach Rance is a great example of a person living out loud, in the moment, and 100% as himself. From deciding to enter the world of “reality” television in the Big Brother house to now putting much of his life on a live stream through younow.com, what you see with Zach is what you get. He speaks his mind, wears emotions on his sleeve, and doesn’t give a crap what people think.

What I find most fascinating about Zach, however, is how determined he is to build his own successes and how he has thought outside the box to do it! Though he didn’t strategize for his #BB16 afterlife before going into the house, through using social media and capitalizing on his creative thinking, Zach has managed to maintain and build his online following of fans, affectionately referred to as “Zacharoos.” On this podcast, he shows these fans much love, talks a bit about his family, lets out some feelings about the House, and much more. Though his passion may come across a bit rough around the edges, Zach is a true sweetheart with a genuine spirit.

I’m a big fan of Zach’s belief of being himself and working hard to keep his momentum going. With his putting out music, entertaining his fans daily, and crafting his debut book, it is hard to imagine looking back several years from now and not seeing Zach as a fully accomplished, self-made man. He is on a skyrocket right to the top! Find him on SnapChat, Twitter, and Instagram as @RanceyPants!
