48: Justin Scheck | Blood & Oil β MBS Ruthless Quest For Global Power, Saudi Arabia & Narrative Journalism
Article Attached To This Podcast Here ποΈ: https://atlasgeographica.com/justin-scheck-blood-and-oil/
The narrative of MBS is relatively straightforward β a monarch who has seen his country thrive of oil wealth, looks into the future and see a world where both fossil fuels and social inequality are a thing of the past. MBS being the visionary with the deep pockets exacts his wealth and influence to make a change transitioning Saudi Arabia from a state that relies on oil to one that relies on solar and other renewables.
So the narrative is simple, but it is the details that are complex. With the monarchy growing at an exponential rate β yes, exponential family growth β the limitations of Saudi geography, the complexity of international influence, the role of social media and the pressures of trying to maintain balance and order, the easily understood vision of MBS is met by hundreds of divergent paths he can barely hang on to.
Find the book here.
In this podcast, you can expect to learn...
- A brief history of Saudi Arabia.
- How MBS spends his billions.
- A bit about the implications of Kashoggi.
- What MBS true skills and qualities are.
- The role of McKinsey, BCG and the rest in Saudi Arabia.
- + much, much more.

Nicholas Shaxson is a British author, journalist and investigator. He is best known for his investigative books Poisoned Wells and Treasure Islands, both extensive investigations into the corrupt and horrific world of tax evasion, financial secrecy and the rest.
Nicholas Shaxson has worked as a part-time writer and researcher for the Tax Justice Network, an expert-led lobbying group that includes members such as Jim Henry, a former guest on the podcast, and they focus on the harmful impacts of tax avoidance, tax competition and tax havens.
In this podcast, Nicholas Shaxson and I discussed exclusively the Pandora Papers and nothing further beyond delving into his bread and butter - financial havens.
We have scheduled a date for the future to record on the podcast about everything else. But for now... The Pandora Papers Explained.
