Both Preston & Aleksa work for the Special Economic Zone consultancy firm, The Adrianople Group, of which Preston is a co-founder. We covered so much in this chat – most notably, what are special economic zones? I wrote an article explaining, in brief, an introduction to these phenomena of globalisation and multinational trade, but it is in this conversation I had with Preston & Aleksa that the true depth of Special Economic Zones starts to be realised.
Over 60% of the world's trade runs through a Special Economic Zone and these are spaces whose regulations fall outside of the state's regulations within the country they are housed. So you can immediately see a story of tax evasion and exploitation. But this is to quick and un-nuanced a look at things, it turns out Special Economic Zones (like many things) are subject to both the good and the bad, and things of such complexity are worth thinking about.
My favourite part of the chart was all of it! But that doesn’t help you point out highlights. So in short I would say the following three subjects make up the best parts of the conversation.
- The Philosophy Of Special Economic Zones
- China & It’s History With Special Economic Zones
- Defining Special Economic Zones Through Real-Life Examples

#31 Tim Marshall | Power Of Geography, Geopolitics, Saudi Arabia & Space
Listen To This Interview As A Podcast Instead🎙️: https://atlasgeographica.com/tim-marshall-power-of-geography/
Tim Marshall returns to the podcast!
To continue along with the international theme and enormous popularity of ‘Prisoners Of Geography‘, Tim Marshall recently published the natural follow-on to this wonderfully geopolitical lens through which to measure the world... ‘The Power Of Geography‘.
It is the themes within this freshly minted book those which Tim and I discuss in this interview. Tim comments on everything from Australia to China to the UK to MBS to Saudi Arabia and even to space. Tim even comments on an accusation often made against him that he is taking a geographical determinist’s view of the world – making for a very interesting consideration for what are the actual building blocks of the world we currently inhabit.
Tim doesn’t disappoint with his broad geopolitical erudition.

#33 Mike Salbro 'Big Mike' | Growing Up Aboriginal In Sweden From The Stolen Generation
Visit The Website Where This Is Published🎙️: https://atlasgeographica.com/mike-salbro-aboriginal-in-sweden/
Big Mike Salbro is one of the last people forcibly taken from their mother’s arms as a member of the stolen generation.
Mike’s story is full of twists, turns, tragedies and inspiration. He was adopted at just a few months old from a lovely Swedish woman and shortly after moved to Stockholm. Mike, alongside his brother (also Aboriginal and adopted in Brisbane) then grew up in Sweden coming through Swedish schools and the entire Swedish system.
Mike has now returned to Australia. Brisbane specifically and now works as a social worker after going through his journey in the social system supporting young indigenous people of Australia.
This chat meant a lot to me. Big Mike is a legend. I hope you enjoy it the same. Spread it far and wide and leave positive reviews.
