Episode 94: Judas Priest Trial
Culture Dumps
04/19/23 • 69 min
This week we go back to 1990 to discuss one of the most bizarre trials in music history. After an attempted double suicide by two young friends, metal legends Judas Priest were put on trial for alleged subliminal messages in their music that were believed to have caused the tragedy. The trial was as ridiculous as the claim.
This trial was part of an ongoing cultural movement to censor musicians in the 80s (PMRC, 2 Live Crew, NWA, Satanic Panic). The heavy publicity of this trial introduced many to the practice of backmasking; listening to music played in reverse to attempt to find hidden messages.

Episode 93: Bumfights
Culture Dumps
03/30/23 • -1 min
This week Ryan is joined by Eric D of Methsyndicate to discuss the immensely unfortunate early 2000’s video series “Bumfights.” What began as a shitty skateboard video quickly turned into a global monster. Worse than what was captured on camera for the videos are the many copycats that followed. File this under, really sad and fucked up shit.

Episode 84: LA Gear
Culture Dumps
11/21/22 • 46 min
LA Gear was an active wear brand started in the 1980’s that focused mostly on sneakers. What started as a women’s accessory company quickly became one of the most recognizable brands of its time. But how did a company that at one point was said to be the best performing company listed on the stock market become all but forgotten? In this episode we will break down what happened to LA Gear, run into Michael Jackson, and prove that brand visibility doesn’t always equal success.

Episode 81: Hervé Villechaize Part 1
Culture Dumps
10/01/22 • 46 min
Hervé Villechaize was everywhere in the mid 70s. He is most famous for his role as Nick Nack in a James Bond film and as Tattoo in the hit TV show Fantasy Island. Villechaize was born with dwarfism and as an adult stood to be just under four feet. Relentlessly bullied as a child, Hervé was driven to achieve success. Part 1 finds him as the darling of the Paris art scene, as well as the transition to New York as something of a hippie curiosity.

Episode 66: McDonald’s “Hot Coffee” Lawsuit
Culture Dumps
03/06/22 • 45 min
The term “frivolous lawsuit” gets thrown around quite a bit, however, the number one go-to example of a frivolous lawsuit was not frivolous at all. In 1992 a 79-year-old woman spilt some of her McDonald’s coffee onto her lap causing third degree burns of six percent of her body. The media completely flubbed the story and painted the woman as a shady grifter who was attempting to scam the Golden Arches out of millions of dollars. We crack open this case file to prove that, yes, the coffee was too damn hot!

Episode 46: Big Dogs vs Big Johnson
Culture Dumps
09/20/21 • 22 min
This week we have a double dump! Ryan is joined by Eric D of Methsyndicate to discuss the rise of two of the most groan worthy apparel brands of all time, Big Dogs and Big Johnson. What were both once multi-million dollar companies are now all but extinct, but how? But why? This episode is not only packed full of bootlegging, rebranding, and head scratchers, but also tons of dick jokes!
