Crystal Paine Show - 286. Goals for 2025 + 12 Things I Plan to Learn
play

12/24/24 • 36 min

Join Jesse and me for this final episode of 2024 as we reflect on the past year and look ahead to 2025 and talk about our goals and hopes for the coming year! The beginning of 2025 feels like a great time to reset, refocus, and embrace a new approach to personal growth, and I share why I’m shifting from yearly goals to monthly ones, how this change brings about flexibility and prevents burnout, and the five key areas I plan to prioritize (all of which happen to be words that start with M!).

We dive into the specific goals I set for January, why I set them, and how I'm really excited to walk them out. I also talk about the 12 areas I hope to become proficient in in 2025 and why I set this goal!

If you are looking for practical tips to set achievable goals for the new year, encouragement to prioritize your health and passions, or maybe even just some general inspiration to make 2025 your best year yet, I hope this episode inspires and encourages you!

In This Episode

[0:35] - Why I am setting specific, actionable monthly goals for 2025 instead of my usual yearly goals.

[3:59] - Hear how Jesse finds it challenging to stay motivated toward year-end goals even though he is so close to reaching them.

[7:17] - Hear how I organize my goals into five “M” categories to prioritize important areas of my life.

[8:05] - 2024 brought about some unexpected challenges, which made it harder to achieve some of my goals.

[9:20] - I celebrate personal growth in 2024 and am focusing on realistic monthly goals for 2025.

[13:05] - By prioritizing health via circadian rhythm, less sugar, and more protein, I saw real marked improvement in my overall health in 2024.

[14:56] - Why I focus on strong spiritual rhythms instead of setting a lot of specific spiritual goals.

[19:33] - I also plan, for 2025, to master twelve DIY items, a new one each month.

[21:11] - This coming year, Jesse is prioritizing flexibility and sustainable habits over rigid programs such as 75 Hard.

[24:30] - I highlight setting goals that are actionable and achievable even during difficult times.

[27:04] - Jesse shares how his coach suggested starting small, like exercising twice weekly, in order to build consistent habits.

[28:01] - I reveal how I adjusted my goals, like decluttering 500 items, to be realistic and attainable.

[30:39] - I plan family-focused activities, personal goals, and savings with Jesse for January.

[33:31] - It's important to budget conservatively with variable income in order to maintain financial stability.

Crystal Paine Show - 69. Answering all your pregnancy questions
play

02/04/20 • 35 min

Over the past few months, we've gotten lots of questions about this very unexpected and surprise pregnancy. So we decided to devote a podcast episode specifically to answering these questions.

We had so much fun answering them in this week's podcast -- and talking about the books we're reading and two things that are saving our lives right now. In this episode, we share:

  • A body wash I'm loving
  • How Jesse finally came to the dark side and joined me in loving joggers
  • Books we're reading and loving right now
  • Our thoughts on the big age gap between Silas and this baby (11 years)
  • How having older kids has changed our perspective on this pregnancy
  • Why we're going to an OB instead of a midwife this time
  • What medication I took to help my nausea
  • Differences in this pregnancy versus my other pregnancies
  • What I'm doing differently this time around -- especially when it comes to postpartum
  • Little snippets of the birth stories of our other three kids.
  • And a lot more!

In This Episode:

[03:06] Aromatherapy Sleep body wash is saving my life this week.

[05:29] Jesse’s finally realized why I love joggers so much!

[06:45] What Jesse has been reading: Hunter Killer and E-Myth Real Estate Investor.

[07:57] My passionate thoughts about The Whole-Brain Child.

[12:47] The pregnancy apps I've been using

[15:33] Our thoughts on the age gap between the older three kids and the new baby.

[20:09] Why you should give yourself grace around the fatigue that being pregnant brings.

[21:20] Hear my advice for dealing with anxiety while pregnant.

[23:19] Jesse shares his advice on how men can support women through the course of pregnancy.

[25:11] There have been a lot of firsts with this pregnancy, like taking medications and having an OB instead of a midwife.

[28:28] Listen as I share the stories of the kids’ births and how they’ve affected my outlook with this birth.

Crystal Paine Show - 270. Conspiracy Theories and a crazy travel story!
play

07/30/24 • 42 min

This episode is a little departure from our normal, but after I accidentally found myself in hot water over something I posted on Instagram, I thought it might be better to do a podcast episode to share what I learned and how I changed my views as a result of the unexpected debate.

S0 buckle up as Jesse and I dive into conspiracy theories today! You may not see eye-to-eye with me or Jesse (we both have different opinions), but I hope this conversation causes you to think and learn... or at least get a laugh at how much I didn't know!

The controversy erupted from my Instagram stories after watching the new film, Fly Me to the Moon. Jesse and I discuss the importance of questioning narratives without necessarily being a conspiracy theorist and the healthy skepticism that can lead to personal growth.

We also, on a lighter note, reflect on recent travel misadventures, including a series of flight delays and unexpected challenges Silas and I had during a trip to Florida. And Jesse recounts his recent trip, highlighting dining at Michie Tavern, and David's newfound skill of escaping his playpen! We also discuss parenting challenges and the humorous moments we've encountered with our kids, like Micah's evolving vocabulary and David's curiosity about our jacuzzi!

Throughout the episode, I invite listeners to explore different perspectives and encourage open, respectful dialogue, even when opinions diverge. So join us for a (hopefully!) thought-provoking conversation filled with laughter, reflection, and a bit of healthy dialogue.

In This Episode

[0:35] - Tune in as we discuss a controversial topic and share some travel stories!

[2:13] - Jesse went to Virginia for a baseball camp with Silas and David, and they had a great time!

[4:55] - Silas stayed in dorms, experienced college life, and enjoyed rustic dining at Michie Tavern.

[5:41] - David learned to climb out of his playpen and had fun doing so in the hotel!

[6:31] - We share how when David returned home, he tried to climb into the Jacuzzi, so we had to remove the knobs.

[8:58] - Micah is narrating his life now, but it's challenging to understand his new words.

[9:59] - While Jesse was away, I took the girls and friends to see Fly Me to the Moon.

[12:03] - The movie, inspired by Marketing the Moon, took creative liberties and depicted fictional events.

[14:41] - I learned from my childhood to question things and not blindly believe everything I am told.

[17:02] - Some questions I had about the original moon landing that sparked a firestorm of controversy on Instagram.

[19:50] - Jesse discusses how NASA technology, developed for space, improved quality for consumer America, including television.

[20:51] - Hear how research has since changed my perspective.

[23:26] - I believe it's healthy to question things and seek information from multiple perspectives.

[27:39] - I express gratitude for those who corrected my misinformation and encouraged open discussions with evidence.

[28:52] - Engaging in debates with different viewpoints sharpens your thinking and broadens your perspective, Jesse points out.

[31:40] - I share how Silas and I recently experienced travel mishaps but ultimately had a successful trip to Florida.

[34:07] - We experienced flight delays due to a bird strike and bathroom emergencies on the plane.

[37:23] - Despite travel delays, I made it to dinner on time and enjoyed the unexpected adventure.

[39:45] - Jesse and I embrace differing viewpoints in our family, which leads to interesting and valuable discussions!

172. Micah's Birth Story

Crystal Paine Show

play

08/02/22 • 37 min

This is the podcast episode so many of you have been waiting for! We not only share about Micah's birth -- which ended up being my easiest, least-eventful, and quickest birth of all of my births -- but about some of the unexpected events leading up to the birth and the eventful day of the birth (including a toddler poop explosion and half the family leaving for a baseball tournament!)

Jesse and I didn't talk about what we were going to share ahead of time, because I wanted this episode to be very raw and unedited so we could have a record of our fresh thoughts about the birth to share with Micah someday when he's older. So we hope this is like just sitting in our living room and chatting with us as we share our thoughts and feelings and perspectives on this big occasion in our family.

In This Episode

[00:34] - Welcome to another episode of The Crystal Paine Show.

[00:57] We are sharing Micah's birth story today.

[02:43] - I had multiple sonograms, leading up to the birth and we made the decision for me to be induced.

[04:47] - Jesse and I both prayed a lot in the two weeks leading up to my induction date that I would naturally go into labor.

[04:54] A week before the induction, baby D got really sick.

[09:22] Another reason we prayed I would go early was because of an upcoming tournament.

[11:16] I have a highlight on my Instagram profile about the whole experience before and during called “My Birth”.

[13:54] My hope was for it to be as natural as possible and to be fully present.

[16:36] Always advocate for what you need at the hospital.

[18:40] - I was present, aware of everything that was going on, talking in between contractions.

[19:29] - It felt like natural contractions versus Pitocin contractions. And that was such a gift because in between contractions, there was almost zero pain.

[21:51] I was trying to focus and rely upon the Lord through some intense contractions.

[22:20] Jesse and I joke about the men’s perspective of birth.

[23:27] I still didn’t feel ready to push.

[25:04] My preferred birthing method is always on hands and knees.

[27:20] - It was this surreal moment when he came out because I was thinking, I didn't feel like he was ready to come out and there he is.

[29:59] - So instead of us admiring our beautiful brand-new baby, we're trying to figure out what to do about this poop explosion.

[31:20] It was such a wonderful birth experience, especially after a rough pregnancy.

Crystal Paine Show - 71. "How do you stay so positive?"
play

02/18/20 • 28 min

"How do you stay so positive?"

I've been asked this question by multiple people in multiple ways recently so Jesse and I decided to devote a podcast episode to the topic.

I thought it would be insightful for us to both talk about this, because I tend to be more of glass half full kind of person while Jesse is more of a glass half empty person.

But it's been so cool to watch Jesse intentionally work to develop more of a positive outlook on life. He shares how he has done that and how it has impacted him.

We also talk about what it looks like to choose our attitude, practical ways we seek to do this, why gratitude can make such a difference, how to feed your souls with good things, and practical things we do to uplift our souls.

In addition to talking about staying positive, we also talk about dry shampoo, Thin Mints, our kids' thoughts on how read alouds have benefited their lives, why the kids want to limit the baby's exposure to screens, the flu, and the Enneagram. As usual, it was quite a diverse array of topics!

In This Episode:

[00:25] Greetings from the flu-infested Paine house.

[01:53] To keep himself fortified, Jesse decided to get some Thin Mint Girl Scout cookies. ;)

[02:44] A listener asks: Are you trying to hold on to your kids’ childhoods through bringing back read aloud time?

[05:41] All three of our kids have very strong opinions and plans for investing in the baby's life.

[08:12] My book for this week was The Path Between Us. This opened up some new methods of communication for Jesse and me.

[11:14] Dry shampoo is saving my life. Learn why.

[13:32] How can you stay positive when things are hard? Is it easier for some people?

[15:53] Jesse feels like he may be wired to be more negative, but you get to choose your attitude.

[18:23] Even with the week they’ve had while being sick with the flu, the kids still try to see the positive as well. It’s an intentional choice to be positive.

[20:36] If you’re not a naturally positive person, you have to work that muscle and it’ll get easier.

[23:02] Counting your blessings and being intentional about taking them in and naming them helps bring positivity to the forefront.

[25:06] Keep in mind that someone else likely would love to be in your shoes for any number of your blessings.

[26:00] An important word on when to seek professional help.

Crystal Paine Show - 183. A Love-Stretched Life (with Jillana Goble)
play

10/25/22 • 33 min

I was so excited about doing this podcast interview. Jillana and I have so many overlapping connections and passions: she lived in Guatemala (where our little boy is from!), she's a foster mom, she's adopted from foster care, she has teenagers, she has an ongoing relationship with a birth mom, and she has a child with special needs.

We could have talked for hours, but I limited myself to just around 30 minutes for this episode -- and it's packed with goodness! We dive deep into what it looks like to parent a child with special needs, the challenges and blessings of walking in proximity to birth parents of children we've fostered and/or adopted, and how living a love-stretched life has turned their world upside down in the most beautiful of ways.

Whether you are a foster parent or an adoptive parent or a parent of a child with special needs or whether your life looks completely different, I think you'll find your heart resonating with her passion to love those who need love the most and to walk alongside them without criticism or condemnation but instead with compassion.

In This Episode

[02:05] – Jillana introduces herself and her unique family.

[03:18] – Why did Jillana foster children before having children biologically?

[06:33] – What was her mindset before she started fostering?

[09:11] – An honest discussion on birth parents.

[13:31] – Parents with kids in foster care were often kids in foster care themselves.

[15:06] – Jillana offers advice on how to walk alongside other foster parents if you aren't called to foster.

[16:50] – Hear about being welcoming but with boundaries.

[19:52] – What it's like parenting a child with special needs.

[29:52] – The beauty of interdependency.

[31:22] – What does a love-stretched life look like?

04/13/21 • 27 min

Do you have a soundtrack on repeat in your head that is repeating negative things and holding you back? Many of us do -- often without even realizing it!

Jon Acuff joins me on the podcast this week to share about how he discovered these soundtracks in his own life, how they were affecting him in a negative way, and how choosing a new soundtrack has changed his life.

Jon is a best-selling author and motivational speaker and he’s spent a lot of time over the past few years paying attention to and studying how our mindset impacts our beliefs and actions.

In this interview, we talk about his method for identifying and replacing broken soundtracks (he shares some great questions to ask yourself to know if what is playing on repeat in your head is a soundtrack you should be listening to!) He shares very personally how this has changed his approach and made such a difference in his life.

No matter where you are at in life, I think this episode will challenge you in a really good way!

In This Episode:

[00:33] Can you guess who my special guest is?

[01:50] Jon shares his background and how he became an author and a speaker.

[03:53] What a soundtrack is to Jon.

[08:50] Practical ways to shift your soundtrack.

[12:19] Once you’ve identified your broken soundtracks, what’s next?

[16:13] How do you choose which soundtracks to listen to and change?

[20:41] What do you do when the stress creeps in?

[23:17] His thoughts on losing an opportunity and how he worked through it.

play

06/11/24 • 29 min

This week's podcast episode covers a much-requested topic: our favorite audiobooks! Summer is a great time for reading and listening to more books -- especially with road trips and/or just a slower schedule. And if you listen regularly to the podcast, you know we love audiobooks.

Whether you’re looking for a way to pass time while cleaning, cooking, or driving or you prefer listening to reading, this episode is packed with our favorite 20+ audiobooks to add to your listening library!

I managed to narrow my list down to 20 (okay, maybe a few more) and then Jesse shares some of his favorite series, too. We share a wide range of books -- including my favorite book on habits, a book that inspired me to want to visit all the national parks, captivating fiction, eye-opening historical narratives, and more!

We also share how we find time to listen to audiobooks, when we listen to audiobooks, and how we listen to audiobooks. And we share how we never pay for audiobooks!

In This Episode

[0:35] - Jesse and I are diving into our favorite audiobooks and sharing 20+ recommendations!

[2:59] - We use the Libby app to listen to audiobooks on my phone (+ when I listen to them!)
