Crystal Paine Show - 286. Goals for 2025 + 12 Things I Plan to Learn
play

12/24/24 • 36 min

Join Jesse and me for this final episode of 2024 as we reflect on the past year and look ahead to 2025 and talk about our goals and hopes for the coming year! The beginning of 2025 feels like a great time to reset, refocus, and embrace a new approach to personal growth, and I share why I’m shifting from yearly goals to monthly ones, how this change brings about flexibility and prevents burnout, and the five key areas I plan to prioritize (all of which happen to be words that start with M!).

We dive into the specific goals I set for January, why I set them, and how I'm really excited to walk them out. I also talk about the 12 areas I hope to become proficient in in 2025 and why I set this goal!

If you are looking for practical tips to set achievable goals for the new year, encouragement to prioritize your health and passions, or maybe even just some general inspiration to make 2025 your best year yet, I hope this episode inspires and encourages you!

In This Episode

[0:35] - Why I am setting specific, actionable monthly goals for 2025 instead of my usual yearly goals.

[3:59] - Hear how Jesse finds it challenging to stay motivated toward year-end goals even though he is so close to reaching them.

[7:17] - Hear how I organize my goals into five “M” categories to prioritize important areas of my life.

[8:05] - 2024 brought about some unexpected challenges, which made it harder to achieve some of my goals.

[9:20] - I celebrate personal growth in 2024 and am focusing on realistic monthly goals for 2025.

[13:05] - By prioritizing health via circadian rhythm, less sugar, and more protein, I saw real marked improvement in my overall health in 2024.

[14:56] - Why I focus on strong spiritual rhythms instead of setting a lot of specific spiritual goals.

[19:33] - I also plan, for 2025, to master twelve DIY items, a new one each month.

[21:11] - This coming year, Jesse is prioritizing flexibility and sustainable habits over rigid programs such as 75 Hard.

[24:30] - I highlight setting goals that are actionable and achievable even during difficult times.

[27:04] - Jesse shares how his coach suggested starting small, like exercising twice weekly, in order to build consistent habits.

[28:01] - I reveal how I adjusted my goals, like decluttering 500 items, to be realistic and attainable.

[30:39] - I plan family-focused activities, personal goals, and savings with Jesse for January.

[33:31] - It's important to budget conservatively with variable income in order to maintain financial stability.

Crystal Paine Show - 56. South Africa Trip Recap (with Jesse and Kathrynne)
play

10/22/19 • 31 min

As a mom, there’s not much that warms your heart more than seeing your child find such fulfillment in loving on others.

We usually go to South Africa every year to spend time with our friends there and to see the progress and work being done by Take Action Ministry — the ministry that is near and dear to our hearts and the one we are very involved with there. (If you’re interested in reading about previous trips, you can read more and see lots of pictures here.)

I couldn’t go this year because of my pregnancy, but I got to send Jesse and Kathrynne instead and they had the absolute BEST time!
I just couldn’t stop smiling as Jesse sent me pictures when they were there. To see my 14-year-old so happy and at home in the country that has stolen my heart made me beyond thrilled and proud as a parent.

There’s a lot of things we’ve gotten wrong and are getting wrong as parents, but we will never regret the priority we’ve placed on travel and experiencing other countries and cultures. It has so profoundly impacted all of us for so much good.

In this week’s episode of the podcast, I sat down with Jesse and Kathrynne and asked them to share about their trip. I loved getting to hear their perspective, what they experienced, and what they have learned from our time spent in South Africa.

In This Episode:

[01:19] Jesse and Kathrynne share why they went to go to South Africa.

[02:33] We all talk about what the flights to South Africa are like and the anxiety that sometimes has surrounded these long international flights.

[08:03] Jesse chats about some of the highlights of this year’s trip and how the area has changed so much.

[08:51] What does Take Action Ministry do at the centers and what is the purpose of these centers?

[13:06] Kathrynne shares her experience with the food prepared and served at the centers.

[15:09] Hear about Kathrynne’s trip highlights.

[18:14] What was different about this trip from the ones taken in the past?

[20:32] We could just give them money, but going and being there is so much more impactful.

[22:50] How have these trips impacted Kathrynne’s and Jesse’s lives?

[27:45] Kathrynne ends the conversation with how appreciative she is for all of the opportunities she has in her life.

Crystal Paine Show - 263. Our Goals for a Slowed Down Summer
play

06/07/24 • 27 min

This week, join us as we share our goals for this summer! You might recall from our recent episodes our theme for the summer is a Slowed Down Summer.

Today, we're talking more about what we plan for that to look like and the specific goals I set for the summer to help me live out that theme. Some of these goals might seem -- at first -- a bit contradictory to the idea of slowing down, but I share more in this episode how these will help me walk out my hope for slowing down this summer.

I set a running goal -- which is something that is so cathartic to me! And a reading goal, which is also something that helps me to slow down. In this episode, I share about how I'm incorporating more reading into my day. I also set a reading goal for two chapter books I want to finish with the younger kids + some preschool I want to finish with them over the summer.

Finally, we are hoping to plan in lots of dates as a couple and dates with the older kids. I set specific numbers to shoot for, but it's mostly just able intentionally prioritizing time to be together and have fun together.

What are your goals and hopes for this summer? I'd love to hear!

In This Episode

[0:35] - Our goals for a slowed-down summer!

[1:42] - A little update on savoring vs. surviving graduation week.

[7:45] - I recently finished reading Win at Work and Succeed at Life, which challenged me to rethink overworking and balance business with personal priorities.

[10:31] - My summer goals focus on working less and slowing down, with specific objectives to achieve this.

[11:11] - Goal #1: Run 100 miles and why it doesn't contradict slowing down.

[14:33] - Goal #2: finish 50 books!

[18:30] - Goal #3: finish reading Farmer Boy and Little House on the Prairie with the younger kids.

[19:44] - Goal #4: finish reading the Biggest Story Bible with the younger kids and Goal #5: go on eight dates with her older kids.

[21:21] - Goal #6: Goal on 15 dates with Jesse.

[22:25] - Prioritizing one-on-one dates with the older kids, embracing flexibility while aiming for monthly quality time together.

[24:59] - Jesse hopes to finally finish Three Felonies a Day this summer.

Crystal Paine Show - 270. Conspiracy Theories and a crazy travel story!
play

07/30/24 • 42 min

This episode is a little departure from our normal, but after I accidentally found myself in hot water over something I posted on Instagram, I thought it might be better to do a podcast episode to share what I learned and how I changed my views as a result of the unexpected debate.

S0 buckle up as Jesse and I dive into conspiracy theories today! You may not see eye-to-eye with me or Jesse (we both have different opinions), but I hope this conversation causes you to think and learn... or at least get a laugh at how much I didn't know!

The controversy erupted from my Instagram stories after watching the new film, Fly Me to the Moon. Jesse and I discuss the importance of questioning narratives without necessarily being a conspiracy theorist and the healthy skepticism that can lead to personal growth.

We also, on a lighter note, reflect on recent travel misadventures, including a series of flight delays and unexpected challenges Silas and I had during a trip to Florida. And Jesse recounts his recent trip, highlighting dining at Michie Tavern, and David's newfound skill of escaping his playpen! We also discuss parenting challenges and the humorous moments we've encountered with our kids, like Micah's evolving vocabulary and David's curiosity about our jacuzzi!

Throughout the episode, I invite listeners to explore different perspectives and encourage open, respectful dialogue, even when opinions diverge. So join us for a (hopefully!) thought-provoking conversation filled with laughter, reflection, and a bit of healthy dialogue.

In This Episode

[0:35] - Tune in as we discuss a controversial topic and share some travel stories!

[2:13] - Jesse went to Virginia for a baseball camp with Silas and David, and they had a great time!

[4:55] - Silas stayed in dorms, experienced college life, and enjoyed rustic dining at Michie Tavern.

[5:41] - David learned to climb out of his playpen and had fun doing so in the hotel!

[6:31] - We share how when David returned home, he tried to climb into the Jacuzzi, so we had to remove the knobs.

[8:58] - Micah is narrating his life now, but it's challenging to understand his new words.

[9:59] - While Jesse was away, I took the girls and friends to see Fly Me to the Moon.

[12:03] - The movie, inspired by Marketing the Moon, took creative liberties and depicted fictional events.

[14:41] - I learned from my childhood to question things and not blindly believe everything I am told.

[17:02] - Some questions I had about the original moon landing that sparked a firestorm of controversy on Instagram.

[19:50] - Jesse discusses how NASA technology, developed for space, improved quality for consumer America, including television.

[20:51] - Hear how research has since changed my perspective.

[23:26] - I believe it's healthy to question things and seek information from multiple perspectives.

[27:39] - I express gratitude for those who corrected my misinformation and encouraged open discussions with evidence.

[28:52] - Engaging in debates with different viewpoints sharpens your thinking and broadens your perspective, Jesse points out.

[31:40] - I share how Silas and I recently experienced travel mishaps but ultimately had a successful trip to Florida.

[34:07] - We experienced flight delays due to a bird strike and bathroom emergencies on the plane.

[37:23] - Despite travel delays, I made it to dinner on time and enjoyed the unexpected adventure.

[39:45] - Jesse and I embrace differing viewpoints in our family, which leads to interesting and valuable discussions!

[19:03] - Max tells us the story of Esther -- and I learn some new facts I've never known before, even though I've read this book many times!

[22:20] - What does that look like practically, for people who they’re saying “I want to do something with my life, I feel like there’s more than just what I am living for right now but I don’t even know how to take the first step"?

[26:07] - What encouragement would you have for someone who is feeling scared about stepping out in faith?

Crystal Paine Show - 101. Honest Confessions of a Control Freak
play

11/03/20 • 30 min

Jesse and I have both struggled with being what you could call "control freaks" in our life. I like to have a plan and I like other people to go along with my plan. Jesse's control shows up more in wanting to be able to control decisions other people make or to make sure that everything is always okay with me and our kids -- and when it's not, he feels a lot of stress and like things are spinning out of control.

Fostering has been such a good exercise for us in learning to let go of our neat little plans. Since we don't make almost any of the decisions for him, we've just had to love him as our own on behalf of his mom while also keeping our hands open to whatever God has for him.

It has been easy, but it's been so good -- and it's taught us how much peace there is when we stop clenching our fists and trying to micromanage our lives and instead release our tight grip and trust God fully.

In this episode, we share lessons we are learning, what has helped us let go of our tightly wound control, and how loving on this little boy has completely changed our lives.

We also give some family updates, share about what's helping Jesse drink more water, my favorite eyebrow definer, and two books we've been reading.

In This Episode:

[01:01] Champ recently received hearing aids and it has been an adventure.

[03:58] We are so excited about our Gatlinburg weekend trip and why we voted early.

[06:19] I have a quick update on the No Bake cookies we were talking about several weeks ago.

[07:02] Water and his half-gallon water bottle are saving Jesse’s life.

[11:01] Maybelline Total Temptations Eyebrow Definer is saving my life.

[13:31] Jesse is back to reading his most recent Brad Thor book, Near Dark.

[14:50] I’ve been reading Dare to Lead by Brene Brown.

[17:30] We’re chatting all about being control freaks and what we've been learning.

[20:40] How our experiences as foster parents have shown us our need to release control.

[24:55] Lessons we're learning about control as parents -- and in other areas of our lives.

[27:40] What stress and fear tell me about resting in the Lord.

Crystal Paine Show - 83. How to Parent a Strong-Willed Child
play

06/23/20 • 32 min

"Could you share some parenting advise for raising my enneagram 8 daughter? She is very headstrong and persistent, but has a complete disregard for rules and regularly challenges authority. As an enneagram 5 (and people pleaser), I do not understand the way she thinks. We have gone around and around and I've tried to get to the heart is the issue. But it seems her bottom line is she is going to do whatever it takes to get what she wants. How do I help channel her perseverance and tenacity in a positive way? She is only 8 years old. -a podcast listener"

When I got this email in my inbox, I could relate so much -- because I remember being that 8-year-old girl with a very strong personality. And truth be told, I think "headstrong" and "persistent" are two words that can still describe me as a 38-year-old woman!

Oftentimes, we hear people talk about their "strong-willed child" in a way that makes it seem so negative... as if a child's will needs to be broken and replaced. But that's like trying to strip someone of their God-given personality.

I believe that the character qualities of persistence and determination can be such a gift -- to your home, to your community, and to the world. That's why I want to encourage you to stop trying to stifle a child's strong personality and instead embrace the strength that it can bring.

In this episode, Jesse and I share encouragement for parents who are raising strong kids. I share from the perspective of being a strong kid growing up and we both share from the perspective of raising a child who has a very strong personality.

In This Episode:

[02:26] Why Snuggle Sacks have been a life-saver recently.

[04:53] I came down with mastitis on Tuesday, so here's what's been saving my life.

[07:59] My experience getting a Coronavirus test (Spoiler... it was negative!)

[10:59] A book update on Get Out of Your Head.

[14:07] We’re chatting all about raising strong-willed kids.

[16:21] It’s okay if you can't relate with your kids, but seeking to understand them is so important.

[17:16] Why rules for an Enneagram 8 are very restrictive.

[19:29] Change your mindset and see the desire for independence as a blessing.

[21:03] Stop using negative labels to define your kids.

[22:07] How studying personality typings can be so beneficial.

[24:26] Celebrate their strengths because they really are gifts.

[26:11] Say yes as often as possible for your child.

[29:45] Don't overly protect your kids from struggle and failure.
