156. A Different Perspective on Foster Care (with Jamie Finn)
Crystal Paine Show
02/08/22 • 31 min
I first found Jamie Finn's instagram when we were beginning our foster care journey. As I started watching her stories and reading her posts, God used her words to really change my heart and perspective on foster care.
When we started fostering, I was really focused on helping kids and I honestly had a critical attitude toward birth parents. But Jamie's words convicted me that I needed a heart change. A Gospel-centered approach to fostering wasn't about rescuing children but about walking alongside families with the ultimate goal of restoration.
It was such an honor to get to meet Jamie in person recently and record a podcast interview with her. In this episode, Jamie shares her a different perspective on foster care than you often hear -- one that is focused on families, not just children.
She also shares very practical encouragement for stepping out and saying yes -- to anything in your life that might scare you. she shares the lessons she's learned and how God has changed her heart over the years. Plus, she gives fantastic advice for those who feel like they can't foster but they want to be involved in some way.
Whether you are a long-time foster family, someone just considering fostering, or someone who has no interest in fostering at all, I think this episode will encourage you in surprising ways.
In This Episode
[00:34] - Welcome to another episode of The Crystal Paine Show. I am honored to have Jamie Finn in the studio today.
[02:37] - A little introduction for Jamie.
[04:13] - "I really appreciate that you don’t sugarcoat things. You share the beautiful and the brutal.'
[05:35] - Do you feel like you have had a shift in your viewpoint of what foster care is?
[07:54] - I hear from many people, “We’re interested in foster care but we’re afraid of how it will affect our family.” Have you ever had those feelings?
[09:39] - How do you respond when someone’s like, “I can never do this, but that’s amazing what you’re doing”?
[12:08] - How do you even know when to take that first step?
[14:28] - What can we practically do? Where do we start?
[19:47] - Could you talk about just some of the really hard things that you have walked through?
[22:56] - If you could go back 8+ years as a brand new foster parent and talk to that woman, what would you say to her?
[25:41] - What is foster care from a Gospel-centered perspective?
[26:41] - I share what I love and recommend Jamie Finn’s new book, Foster the Family.
[28:56] - What do you say to that person who feels like, “Is God still good, even when this feels so hard”?

124. Unexpected Lessons from a Year of Foster Care
Crystal Paine Show
05/11/21 • 32 min
It has been just over a year since we brought home Champ, our first long-term placement in our foster care journey. It's been a year of learning, growing, and riding a rollercoaster of emotions.
In this episode of the podcast, Jesse and I sit down and recount some of the most unexpected lessons -- the grief of goodbye, walking through deep sadness with our kids, what we've learned through reunification, how it has impacted our kids, thoughts on caring for a child with special needs, and how our faith has been strengthened and changed through it.
We also talk about a book I'm reading, a book Jesse finished, plus the foster care support group and how sometimes stepping into awkward things can turn into really awesome relationships.
In This Episode:
[00:33] It’s foster care awareness month and we’re sharing our takeaways from this past year of fostering.
[01:51] My foster care support group is saving my life these days.
[05:42] Jesse finished the book he’s been reading and is still recommending it to me.
[08:49] I’ve been reading Can’t Steal My Joy by Bekah Bowman.
[11:35] Okay, let’s talk all things foster care and the unexpected lessons we’ve learned along the way.
[13:20] Dealing with the grief that comes along with reunification was a huge lesson learned.
[15:30] Our kids have also been impacted and given the opportunity to learn how to grieve.
[17:12] How our grief impacted our initial experience with Baby D.
[20:04] Fostering has impacted our kids and we went into that with eyes wide open, but it’s also given them a chance to grow so much.
[23:01] It’s been amazing to watch our kids become so attached to these wonderful children.
[26:02] Fear is normal. Expect the unexpected.
[27:55] Foster care has also changed my perspective on hot button topics in the world.
[30:14] This past year has deepened our faith like never before.

75. Parenting with Confidence (with Becky Keife)
Crystal Paine Show
03/17/20 • 29 min
I know that the whole world is kind of in upheaval right now and there's a lot of unknown and uncertainty. I debated whether to go ahead with publishing this podcast that was planned for the week as it didn't really have much of anything to do with what's going on in the world.
However, the more I thought about it, the more I realized that probably some of you would like a break from the incessant stream of news. Also, I know that many families are going to be hunkering down over the next few weeks (or longer) and spending a lot of time at home as a family.
I realized that, with this in mind, maybe this was the perfect episode for this week. We moms need to be reminded that God has given us the kids He has and He knows that there is no better mom for the job of raising our kids than us, especially during hard days.
In this episode of the podcast, I'm joined by Becky Keife, author of No Better Mom for the Job, to discuss what it means to feel confident in your motherhood.
Becky had three boys in three and a half years... and I think that in itself is enough for us to sit up and listen to what she has to say! :) While no parenting journey is easy, there are certainly those with more trials to go through. Becky shares what it was like having three boys at such young ages and how she managed during those times.
It wasn’t until she really leaned into her faith, however, that she found the confidence to take ownership of her motherhood. So many times she felt like she was failing her children and the the Lord had given those babies to her at the wrong time. She didn’t feel like the right mother for the job.
Through seeking the Lord and finding her confidence in His goodness and love, her attitude changed. In this episode, she shares her journey to more confident parenting, owning her gifts (and being okay with areas that weren't her gifts!), how she has learned to embrace her active and "spirited" boys and the personalities God has given them, and how parenting has changed as her kids have gotten older.
I hope our conversation encourages you -- wherever you are in your parenting journey -- that there is no better mom for the job!
In This Episode:
[01:19] Becky shares about being a mom to 3 spirited boys born in 3 1/2 years!
[04:56] I read a quote from the book that discusses God’s love and how that contributes to confidence in parenting.
[07:09] Was it a long process to get to the place of finding your confidence in God as a parent?
[08:22] We talk candidly about how every mom is so different and Becky shares how she made peace with not being a mom who could take her kids to the park.
[12:51] How do you approach delighting in high-energy children without crushing their spirit?
[15:57] When you’re in the thick of things, you may not feel like you’re the right mom.
[17:24] What would Becky say to the moms who feel like they aren't qualified and don't have any special gifts or talents?
[20:42] There is a power in community. Learn how to build connections with other moms.
[23:37] Being fine isn’t the point. Hear why!
[24:49] How can you parent with confidence as your kids get older?

70. How I Read 15 Books in January
Crystal Paine Show
02/11/20 • 27 min
"How did you manage to read 15 books in January?"
I've gotten this question over and over again the past two weeks. Truth be told, I had to stop and ask that question myself when I got to the end of January and realized I had finished 15 books in the first month of the year!
As I reflected on the last month, I realized that there are 4 tweaks I made in January to how I approached reading that made a big difference... even though they were really minor tweaks.
How I'm Fitting In More Reading Time
1. I stopped answering Instagram messages (or getting distracted on Instagram) while on the treadmill and instead I use 20-30 minutes of my walking time each day to read a book.
2. I began setting weekly reading goals that I'm posting on MoneySavingMom.com. This has been highly motivational for me to set weekly goals instead of yearly goals.
3. I started listening to audiobooks again and try to get in at least an hour of audio listening while cleaning, cooking, getting ready in the morning, or driving by myself.
4. I revived family read aloud time again -- something that we'd let go of in recent years.
In this episode, I share more about how I'm making each of these tweaks happen and the way that they are making such a difference in our life.
In This Episode:
[02:46] I’ve been reading Originals by Adam Grant and had several takeaways.
[07:38] We recently got a couple of suggestions from our listeners. Listen in!
[09:16] Jesse has been geeking out on our new soundboard.
[11:15] My Spalding leggings have been saving my life.
[13:01] I dive into how I read more. Specifically how I read 15 books in January.
[15:53] How reading instead of scrolling Instagram has made such a difference.
[17:32] My practical suggestions for fitting in more audiobook listening.
[20:12] Why (and how!) we started prioritizing family reading time again.
[22:55] The difference that tracking my reading and setting weekly reading goals has made for me.
[24:27] Bonus tip: How reading multiple books at once allows me to read more quickly too.

61. Christmas Traditions & What We're Doing Differently This Year (a conversation with our kids)
Crystal Paine Show
12/03/19 • 24 min
One of the most requested podcast episodes has been for us to talk about our Christmas traditions, what Christmas looks like for our family, and how we do gifts for our immediate and extended family.
In this episode, we sat down with Kathrynne, Kaitlynn, and Silas and had a discussion on our favorite Christmas memories, why we make a December Bucket List, what we chose for our bucket list this year, some things we're doing differently for Christmas this year, how we do gifts, and what Christmas Eve and Christmas Day look like for our family.
One of our biggest goals for each December is to keep things simple, not over-commit, and focus on memory-making and shared experiences. We sit down at the end of November and talk about what we want to prioritize for the Christmas season and then we make a list and block out days and times on the calendar to make these priorities happen.
We're excited about some new things we're trying this year and we're looking forward to another special December season of celebrating the true meaning of Christmas and spending lots of time together as a family!
In This Episode:
[01:58] We kick off the show by each sharing one of our favorite Christmas memories.
[07:29] Want to know what's on our December Bucket List this year?
[11:16] Hear about our Dollar Tree stocking tradition and why we’re stepping it up this year.
[13:16] How we do presents at our house.
[15:45] Giving is something that is always a big priority for us, thanks to the kids' initiative in this area!

54. Jesse Answers Your Burning Questions
Crystal Paine Show
10/08/19 • 35 min
In 2014, Jesse closed down his law practice, we moved from Kansas to Tennessee, and he came home full-time.
That was over 5 years ago and it’s taken us a few years to find our rhythm. We’ve both learned and grown a lot in these last five years. It hasn’t been easy. He struggled through a period of depression. I struggled to figure out what it looked like to love him well through that.
But in the last two years, I’ve seen Jesse truly come alive, embrace who God has made him to be, and pour himself into the people and opportunities right in front of him. It has been beautiful and heartwarming to have a front row seat on his journey!
So many people have asked questions over the past five years like, “Is Jesse still an attorney? Why did he leave his law practice? What is his role in your business? What does his day-to-day look like?”
I think the fact that he would choose to come home full-time after getting his law degree and being licensed as an attorney really fascinated people... or makes people shake their heads in confusion.
Today, on the podcast, I ask him these burning questions you all have asked and he gets really honest about his journey and where he is now.
If you’re struggling with major life changes, want to find your worth outside of your work, or are just curious about some of the behind-the-scenes of our lives, I think this episode will encourage you.
Thank you, Jesse, for your willingness to be so open and vulnerable. I love you and love this crazy and adventurous and wild ride of life we’re on together!
In This Episode:
[00:25] Welcome back! We're turning the tables a little today and I'm interviewing Jesse!
[01:38] What’s saving our lives: Nalgene bottles and seeing our baby on an ultrasound!
[06:44] I haven't gotten in much reading recently, but every day I take time to read The Daily Light.
[09:01] Jesse shares a brief recap of his story post-law school and starting his own law firm.
[13:45] Why did Jesse decide to close down the law firm?
[19:04] How Jesse struggled to recognize his gifts and battled depression in those early months.
[23:07] What does Jesse’s life look like now?
[29:10] We talk about Jesse's involvement in church, our home, and our business.
[31:16] I close out the show by sharing why I am so grateful that Jesse is home and how his willingness to take a risk has benefited our family in such profound ways.

52. My Unplugged Sundays Experiment
Crystal Paine Show
09/24/19 • 20 min
When Jesse and I first got married, we always took Sunday offline. It was a day for us to just enjoy going to church, resting, and being together as a family.
In recent years, I’ve fallen out of that practice (I'm not even exactly sure why, but I did). In addition to going to church and volunteering at church, Sunday became a day for me to also play catchup on a lot of blogging work and emails.
This meant that I was usually working at least some hours every single day of the week. Which I don't recommend because it meant I rarely had a stretch of offline time for more than a few hours at a time.
My 4-Week Commitment
I could make a lot of excuses and seemingly valid reasons as to why I "needed" to work on Sunday, but I realized that working 7 days a week wasn't good for my soul or body or family, so I decided to try something different and make a 4-week commitment to unplug and go offline on Sundays.
In today's podcast episode, I share really candidly the surprising results of my experiment and how much it has changed my life. (Oh and Jesse also shares about his current morning routine and a type of chair we love. I talk about a book I finished recently and the one food I've been loving in my first trimester.
In This Episode:
[02:14] Listen in as Jesse shares about his morning routine and an outdoor chair that we love.
[06:13] I tell you about a book I recently finished that goes along so well with this podcast episode.
[09:26] Let's talk about my Unplugged Sundays Experiment.
[09:59] For years, I justified working on Sunday for a variety of reasons.
[11:30] ... but really it was a lack of trust in God and trying to control things in my own strength.
[13:03] Rather than making a big longterm commitment, I did a four-week-long trial of not working on Sunday.
[16:31] The benefits of the time off have been incredible. I share the different surprises that have happened along the way.
[18:06] Why I now feel so much more productive in the 6 days I do work.

51. Our HUGE announcement!
Crystal Paine Show
09/17/19 • 19 min
The biggest surprise of our lives: I’M PREGNANT!!!!!!
The fertility specialist said we weren’t even a candidate for IVF, but y’all, our God is bigger than a specialist’s diagnosis or multiple tests that said it would never, ever be a possibility.
When we got the devastating new last year that we would never be able to conceive again — even with a lot of fertility help — we decided to grieve and find closure and then let the dream of expanding our family through pregnancy die. Instead, we felt God leading us to foster and we spent all summer working towards getting licensed.
Two days after we finished all the foster care licensing requirements, we found out we were expecting (through a crazy set of circumstances!)
It was the most hilarious and humbling gift from God ever. To say we were in complete shock would be an understatement.
I never thought I’d get to carry another life inside of me. Every day is a gift. The morning, noon, and night sickness is a gift. And instead of wanting to just get the first trimester over with, I’m seeking to savor each day as best as is possible.
If you want all the details on how we found out (I thought I was going through early menopause!) or how we told the kids, be sure to tune in to today’s episode of The Crystal Paine Show.
Oh and yes, we’re still moving forward with foster care (we found out two days after our home study was finished!) and I’m due April 30th — the same due date I had with Silas almost 11 years ago!!
Note: I know that many of you are struggling through the pain of infertility right now. My heart’s desire is that by me sharing this, it would in no way cause additional pain for you but would give you a glimmer of hope. God is still in the miracle-working business and He can do anything. At the same time, please know that my heart has hurt for you as I thought about announcing our news today. You are seen. You are not forgotten. And I would be honored to pray for you — just send me a message and I’ll pray for you by name
In This Episode:
[00:25] We have some HUGE news for you! I’m PREGNANT and it’s complete and unexpected miracle!
[02:53] Why going through infertility testing and procedures helped us realize the miracle we had in our three children.
[03:27] We found out two days after finishing our foster care home study (the last portion required to get licensed).
[04:30] I was feeling super anxious and irritable and stressed about the home study, which seemed out of character for me.
[05:27] All the details on the crazy way we ended up finding out and why I thought I was going through early menopause!
[11:00] My heart goes out to all the women who are struggling with infertility. My hope is that this announcement gives you hope not sadness.
[12:51] Want to know how the kids took the news?

48. Helping Our Kids Overcome Shame (with Kristin Maher)
Crystal Paine Show
08/27/19 • 33 min
Kristin Maher, author of the new kids’ book, The Awfulizer: Learning to Overcome the Shame Game, sat down in my office studio last week and had a really honest conversation with me.
We talked about what shame is, how to help our kids understand and recognize their Shame Voice, and what to do when your older child doesn’t feel like they are good enough.
We also had a really frank discussion about shame and body image and how many of us adults still struggle with shame and those feelings of not being enough.
If you’ve ever felt like, “If people knew everything about me, they would leave” or “I don’t measure up to others” or you have a child who struggles with believing lies about themselves, please do not miss this conversation with Kristin.
It might step on your toes a bit (it stepped on mine!), but I think it will also give you hope, encouragement, and practical steps you can take for yourself and your kids to start overcoming the Shame Game.
Let’s break free from the lies we believe and the Shame Voices that are telling us we’re not enough... and let’s walk in the truth! This is how we start breaking the Shame Cycle — for ourselves and the next generation!
Psst! You’ll also get to hear about our current reads and why robot vacuums are lifesavers!
In This Episode:
[01:19] Kristin gives a brief introduction of herself and her family.
[02:16] Kristin and I share what books we’re reading right now.
[05:50] Hear what’s saving our lives right now -- including a robot vacuum.
[09:04] Kristin discusses why she decided to write her book and her inspiration.
[11:56] How did shame manifest itself in Kristin's life?
[12:49] What process did Kristin follow to overcome her shame talk and how long did it take?
[14:39] What can parents do to help their children process, overcome, and prevent shame?
[18:09] How can parents talk to their older children about shame?
[21:21] We discuss ways to change our self-talk to be an example to our children.
[27:42] Let's stop believing the lies and begin living in the truth!
