270. Conspiracy Theories and a crazy travel story!
Crystal Paine Show
07/30/24 • 42 min
This episode is a little departure from our normal, but after I accidentally found myself in hot water over something I posted on Instagram, I thought it might be better to do a podcast episode to share what I learned and how I changed my views as a result of the unexpected debate.
S0 buckle up as Jesse and I dive into conspiracy theories today! You may not see eye-to-eye with me or Jesse (we both have different opinions), but I hope this conversation causes you to think and learn... or at least get a laugh at how much I didn't know!
The controversy erupted from my Instagram stories after watching the new film, Fly Me to the Moon. Jesse and I discuss the importance of questioning narratives without necessarily being a conspiracy theorist and the healthy skepticism that can lead to personal growth.
We also, on a lighter note, reflect on recent travel misadventures, including a series of flight delays and unexpected challenges Silas and I had during a trip to Florida. And Jesse recounts his recent trip, highlighting dining at Michie Tavern, and David's newfound skill of escaping his playpen! We also discuss parenting challenges and the humorous moments we've encountered with our kids, like Micah's evolving vocabulary and David's curiosity about our jacuzzi!
Throughout the episode, I invite listeners to explore different perspectives and encourage open, respectful dialogue, even when opinions diverge. So join us for a (hopefully!) thought-provoking conversation filled with laughter, reflection, and a bit of healthy dialogue.

It feels almost as if we’ve lived through an entire month in just a week’s time. In this week’s podcast episode, we sit down and talk about some of the BIG updates/changes/unexpected things that happened at our house recently, including:
- getting a long-term placement from foster care for a preemie who was still in the NICU (he got out of the hospital today!!!!)
- the kids being out of school and everything being cancelled — and how we are letting them plan their routine for the day and how that is working for us
- Kathrynne’s trip to Suriname where she ended up getting stuck there because the country closed their borders due to COVID-19 (she only ended up having to stay two extra days — and she shares more about that experience on the podcast)
If you have some extra time and want a more newsy behind-the-scenes peek into what’s going on at our house right now, don’t miss this episode.

46. Modesty, Legalism, and Grace
Crystal Paine Show
08/13/19 • 29 min
Ever since Jesse and I did our show on breaking free from legalism, we’ve received a lot emails, messages, and comments all asking similar questions.
The questions were all something like, "If you don't adhere to legalism, what should you adhere to?" "How do you determine what you should believe and practice?" "What kind of convictions should a Christian have when it comes to dress, music, dating, a woman's role, etc.?"
In this episode, Jesse and I dig into the concept of standards and how to know what to believe and practice in light of grace and the Gospel. We tackle some tough topics -- like modesty -- and share how we process through what is right and wrong when it comes to standards.
While I don't expect you to agree with every thing we say, I hope that this episode will challenge you to think about what you believe and why you believe it and the choices you make and why you make them.
In This Episode:
[00:26] - Welcome back to the show! This is a different show than we usually do because we're going to take a deep dive into the topic of legalism.
[01:57] - Listen as I read the listener email that inspired us to do this show.
[03:28] - Jesse starts off with his thoughts on the email and the definition of standards.
[06:03] - Is your reason for doing something to please someone else or to "fit in"?
[07:09] - The basis of any standard should start with your heart.
[10:14] - Who do you believe God is? Your actions might show that it's actually different than what you say.
[11:42] - I share my favorite phrase in the Bible that applies to this topic and how it has profoundly impacted my life.
[17:35] - So what standards should we set? How do we decide how we should act and what convictions we should hold?

170. Making Sabbath Rest a Priority (with Bob & Linda Lotich)
Crystal Paine Show
05/17/22 • 32 min
“Start where you are.” Such a short statement but it has such a huge impact.
In this episode of The Crystal Paine Show, Bob and Linda Lotich, authors of their new book Simple Money, Rich Life: Achieve True Financial Freedom and Design a Life of Eternal Impact, talk about how they’ve made Sabbath a priority in their home and lives and how to just start where you are.
In this age of busyness when we all have a lot on our plates, is Sabbath rest even possible? If so, what would that look like? We delve into what it looks like for Bob & Linda and how we all can find ways to practice it in our own lives — even if we have a very full schedule.
We also talk about how this practice is more about our hearts and releasing our sense of control and micromanaging our lives and instead resting in Jesus.
Bob and Linda share their experiences, what they’ve learned, how this practice has deeply impacted them, and struggles they have encountered along the way. I hope this episode inspires you with ideas for how you, too, can implement a regular practice of Sabbath in your own life and what that might look like for you.

266. Why We Encourage Our Kids to Wait to Date
Crystal Paine Show
06/25/24 • 38 min
This week’s episode dives into a topic that many of you have asked about: how we're approaching dating with our kids. Jesse and I previously shared our general dating guidelines, but as our teens have gotten older, we wanted to share more that we've learned as we have put those principles into practice in real-time.
I recently touched on our approach to dating on Instagram, and it sparked some lively (and controversial) conversations, so join Jesse and I today as we dive even deeper into our experiences and how we have adjusted our guidance while respecting our kids' privacy and autonomy.
Jesse and I share our philosophy that dating should be intentional and mindful, and we have encouraged our kids to view dating as a way to get to know someone with the potential for a serious, long-term relationship, rather than just a casual activity. We discuss how we've balanced setting boundaries without being overly controlling, allowing our kids to make their own decisions while we support them through their journeys, having found that this approach not only respects their autonomy but also helps them develop a deeper understanding of themselves and their relationships.
We also talk about the importance of observing someone's character over time and in various situations. Seeing how someone reacts in different scenarios, such as in competitive sports or when things don't go their way, can reveal a lot about their true nature, and this can be very important for making informed decisions about whether to pursue a deeper relationship.
In addition to talk about dating, we also share some fun life updates -- like our roller coaster Father's Day, a trip to Mississippi for Silas' baseball tournament, our new coffee maker, watching the Olympics trials, and a freebie to help you get dinner on the table on busy nights.
In This Episode
[0:35] - Jesse and I are talking more about what we're learning with walking with our kids through dating and relationships.
[2:13] - Hear all about Jesse's unexpected Father's Day and how we narrowly avoided a trip to the ER.
[13:26] - We have enjoyed watching the Olympic trials with our daughter Kierstyn, who is excited about various sports, especially gymnastics.
[15:19] - Hear some listener feedback which includes a request for the audiobook library link.
[16:52] - I share a listener's observation about the use of "sofa" versus "couch" in an earlier episode. Which do you say?
[19:28] - I have been reading and loving Natalie Runion's book The House That Jesus Built.
[21:08] - Tune in for an exciting announcement about a freebie with 60 quick meal ideas to replace takeout!
[22:37] - Our views on dating and why we encourage our kids to wait until they are ready to think longterm.
[24:19] - Start conversations about boundaries, respect for our bodies and others, and the beauty of marriage early.
[27:20] - Why we don't think you should date someone you wouldn't consider marrying.
[31:00] - Jesse reflects on our daughters appreciating the intentional approach to dating.
[33:31] - Observe people in various contexts to gauge their true character before committing to a relationship.
[35:10] - The other biggest thing is praying daily for our children's relationships, seeking God's guidance for clear direction.

51. Our HUGE announcement!
Crystal Paine Show
09/17/19 • 19 min
The biggest surprise of our lives: I’M PREGNANT!!!!!!
The fertility specialist said we weren’t even a candidate for IVF, but y’all, our God is bigger than a specialist’s diagnosis or multiple tests that said it would never, ever be a possibility.
When we got the devastating new last year that we would never be able to conceive again — even with a lot of fertility help — we decided to grieve and find closure and then let the dream of expanding our family through pregnancy die. Instead, we felt God leading us to foster and we spent all summer working towards getting licensed.
Two days after we finished all the foster care licensing requirements, we found out we were expecting (through a crazy set of circumstances!)
It was the most hilarious and humbling gift from God ever. To say we were in complete shock would be an understatement.
I never thought I’d get to carry another life inside of me. Every day is a gift. The morning, noon, and night sickness is a gift. And instead of wanting to just get the first trimester over with, I’m seeking to savor each day as best as is possible.
If you want all the details on how we found out (I thought I was going through early menopause!) or how we told the kids, be sure to tune in to today’s episode of The Crystal Paine Show.
Oh and yes, we’re still moving forward with foster care (we found out two days after our home study was finished!) and I’m due April 30th — the same due date I had with Silas almost 11 years ago!!
Note: I know that many of you are struggling through the pain of infertility right now. My heart’s desire is that by me sharing this, it would in no way cause additional pain for you but would give you a glimmer of hope. God is still in the miracle-working business and He can do anything. At the same time, please know that my heart has hurt for you as I thought about announcing our news today. You are seen. You are not forgotten. And I would be honored to pray for you — just send me a message and I’ll pray for you by name
In This Episode:
[00:25] We have some HUGE news for you! I’m PREGNANT and it’s complete and unexpected miracle!
[02:53] Why going through infertility testing and procedures helped us realize the miracle we had in our three children.
[03:27] We found out two days after finishing our foster care home study (the last portion required to get licensed).
[04:30] I was feeling super anxious and irritable and stressed about the home study, which seemed out of character for me.
[05:27] All the details on the crazy way we ended up finding out and why I thought I was going through early menopause!
[11:00] My heart goes out to all the women who are struggling with infertility. My hope is that this announcement gives you hope not sadness.
[12:51] Want to know how the kids took the news?

263. Our Goals for a Slowed Down Summer
Crystal Paine Show
06/07/24 • 27 min
This week, join us as we share our goals for this summer! You might recall from our recent episodes our theme for the summer is a Slowed Down Summer.
Today, we're talking more about what we plan for that to look like and the specific goals I set for the summer to help me live out that theme. Some of these goals might seem -- at first -- a bit contradictory to the idea of slowing down, but I share more in this episode how these will help me walk out my hope for slowing down this summer.
I set a running goal -- which is something that is so cathartic to me! And a reading goal, which is also something that helps me to slow down. In this episode, I share about how I'm incorporating more reading into my day. I also set a reading goal for two chapter books I want to finish with the younger kids + some preschool I want to finish with them over the summer.
Finally, we are hoping to plan in lots of dates as a couple and dates with the older kids. I set specific numbers to shoot for, but it's mostly just able intentionally prioritizing time to be together and have fun together.
What are your goals and hopes for this summer? I'd love to hear!
