Crushing Classical - Desmond Earley: Chamber Music by James Joyce
play

11/14/24 • 35 min

I'm always interested in project management - how big and complex projects come to life. I'm always interested in inspiration - where the ideas come from and the WHY behind them. This interview gives us ALL of that and more!

Born in Dublin, very close to the location of many of Handel's Dublin performances in 1741and 1742, Dr. Desmond Earley is an accomplished harpsichordist, conductor, Baroque- and Choral-Music specialist, educator, arts ambassador, and composer. Hailed by The Irish Times as ‘enterprising and wide ranging’, he is an Associate Professor specialising in Performance Studies, Desmond is the founding Artistic Director of the Choral Scholars of University College Dublin. His work with this group has reached listeners in over 150 countries worldwide; recordings of Choral Scholars on the Signum Classics label – released under his direction – have enjoyed over 11 million streams on Spotify, Apple Music and Amazon Music; and, YouTube views of Desmond Earley and Choral Scholars exceed 32 million, with over 100,000 channel subscribers.

As a celebrated composer and arranger, Desmond has published works with Music Sales (UK), Hal Leonard Corporation (USA), Alliance Music (USA) and with Seolta Music (IRL) where he serves as editor of the international ‘College Choral Series’. He has created bespoke arrangements for renowned ensembles including the RTÉ Concert Orchestra, the Portland Symphony Orchestra (Maine, USA), Tenebrae (UK), and the Irish Baroque Orchestra.

His acclaimed work Body of the Moon (2017), based on a setting of texts by Galileo Galilei, was commissioned by All Classical Radio (USA) to be played during the progress of the total solar eclipse across the United States of America that same year. He was recently awarded an Arts Council of Ireland Bursary and is currently working on a choral/instrumental collection titled 'Dracula Reflected', inspired by Bram Stoker’s famous epistolary.

As an instrumentalist and director, Desmond has worked with many of the world’s finest orchestras including the Irish Chamber Orchestra, Portland Baroque Orchestra, Irish Baroque Orchestra, RTÉ Concert Orchestra, European Union Chamber Orchestra and English Chamber Orchestra. Desmond has also collaborated with some of the world’s great musicians including Christopher Hogwood, Monica Huggett, Konrad Junghaenel, and Sir James Galway.

What you'll hear:

  • Why and how a career in classical music doesn’t have to be as narrow and limited as Choice A or Choice B
  • The most effective and powerful way to work through a personal or professional crisis
  • How putting so much emphasis and effort on the “big” events and moments of your life actually *creates* failure
  • The precarious spot you put yourself in when the only definition you have of yourself is “I’m a guy/gal who plays _______ (instrument)” (hint: you are so much more!)

... and much more

Crushing Classical - Dr. Tonya Lawson, Musician, Blogger, SEO Specialist!
play

12/28/23 • 34 min

Dr. Tonya Lawson is a musician, blogger, and SEO specialist whose mission is to empower musicians and other creatives to build out passive income streams so they have the financial freedom to live the life they want to live.

She works part time at Middle Tennessee State University, runs a private music studio of 50+ students, has 3 blogs, and through her membership, helps musicians get their websites found on google so they can book more gigs, get more students, and earn passive income along the way!

We talked about

1. Why musicians should be diversifying their income and how to set up passive income streams without sacrificing your music career.

2. How to use a blog to bring new people to your website (without having to constantly promote it on social media).

3. How to add additional monetization to your private studio with affiliate income.

And this was SOO deliciously geeky for me. I loved our conversation and I know you will too!

Find Tonya at her website, instagram, or Youtube. Sign up for her free new year SEO challenge, Five Days of Ranking!!

Crushing Classical - Tim Corpus: Composer, Sound Designer, Arts Manager
play

12/14/23 • 40 min

Tim Corpus is an internationally performed composer, sound designer, and arts manager who calls Chicago home. Highlights include performances at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and features on CNN Money, BBC Radio3, and 98.7 WFMT among others. His album, “MMXX”, was shortlisted for the 2022 Grammy awards and hailed as “a striking disc” by critic Robert Hugill.

Also a composer for film and games, his music has received awards from festivals around the country. Beyond his own compositions, Tim is an active orchestrator and arranger having worked with Andrea Bocelli, Placido Domingo, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Milwaukee Symphony, Third Coast Percussion, and others.

His diverse career in the arts has also included leading arts organizations as an Executive Director and board member, and teaching at Loyola University Chicago and Chicago City Colleges.

I loved talking portfolio careers with Tim - he’s right down in the weeds of how you build a thriving life as a creator, a performer, an arts manager - how you take care of yourself both inside and out, and how you get things done when there are a million things pulling at you.

I know you will love this conversation!

Crushing Classical - Kincaid Rabb: Navigating Burnout and Creativity
play

11/30/23 • 37 min

Kincaid Rabb is a writer and composer. They like dinosaurs, roller coasters, romance bookstores, craft cocktails, and houseplants. Kincaid writes about childhood memories, fantasy worlds, and little epiphanies that inspire the everyday extraordinary.

Kincaid identifies as queer, transgender, nonbinary, neurodivergent, and autistic, and uses they/them pronouns.

I’ve been working with Kincaid for a while - they wrote a fantastic piece for the oboists in my FLOW program and I have such admiration for their talent - but this conversation was not about that.

Many people aspire to a creative life - the magical idea of working from home, as a composer or writer, all the time sounds just heavenly. Kincaid speaks eloquently about the difficulties that come along with this life, and I’ve not heard anyone speak so specifically and helpfully about burnout and creative recovery.

I know you will hear some ideas and truths that you can take away into your own practice!

You can find Kincaid at their website or on instagram.

Crushing Classical - Michelle Lynne: The Fearless Artist
play

10/17/24 • 27 min

Michelle Lynn, a Canadian pianist now based in Europe, expanded from being a classical musician to being an entrepreneur by founding the Fearless Artist Mastermind during COVID-19. The program helps classical musicians build fulfilling careers through monthly online calls, hot seats for peer advice, and a social media program called the Sprint. Michelle emphasizes the importance of a growth mindset, overcoming fear of judgment, and leveraging relationships. Michelle advocates for redefining success and encourages musicians to focus on their unique strengths and the broader impact of their work.

I love having coaches on this podcast because I always seem to find ahas for myself in our conversations! Michelle’s take on both PERFORMING and LIVING is so refreshing. She talks about being of service - being there for the audience, for your colleagues, for the organizations you are working with - and about taking the pressure off yourself to be perfect because what people want is HUMANITY. And I am HERE for her message. I know you will love this episode.

Connect with the Fearless Artist Mastermind and take their quiz at the website or on instagram at @thefearlessartistmastermind. You can follow Michelle at @thisismichellelynne.
