In Episode 9, Bolton and Grace finish recapping the 1967 true crime classic, In Cold Blood, and discuss the facts of the true crime story that the movie is based on.

The movie was written, directed, and produced by Richard Brooks and is based on the 1966 book of the same name written by Truman Capote. The musical score was composed by the great Quincy Jones. The film stars Robert Blake and Scott Wilson as convicted murderers Perry Smith and Richard "Dick" Hickock. The film focuses on the seemingly random murder of a family of four in Holcomb, Kansas. Truman Capote's In Cold Blood is hailed by many to be the birth of the true crime genre. Likewise, the movie is often noted as the first true crime movie ever made. The film goes beyond birthing the true crime film genre and provides an entertaining, yet not overly dramatized or gory, and aesthetically interesting viewer experience.

04/28/21 • 96 min

In Episode 7, Bolton and Grace recap the 2013 movie, The Frozen Ground, and discuss the facts of the true crime story that the movie is based on.

The movie was written and directed by Scott Walker. The film stars Nicolas Cage as Alaskan State Trooper Sergeant Jack Halcombe, Vanessa Hudgens as survivor-hero Cindy Paulson, and John Cusack as serial killer Robert Hansen. The film focuses on serial killer Robert Hansen’s rampage against women and girls in the Anchorage area, and how survivor Cindy Paulson helped law enforcement apprehend Hansen and discover the extent of his crimes. The Frozen Ground provides insight into how Hansen was able to get away with his crimes for so long, and does a great job of highlighting the important role Cindy Paulson played in his eventual apprehension. This movie has some scenes that are tough to watch, and may be especially triggering for survivors of sex trafficking and/or sexual assault. While The Frozen Ground gets most of the major details correct; Scott Walker took dramatic license with parts of the storyline, which Bolton & Grace discuss in this episode.

play

03/29/21 • 79 min

In Episode 6, Bolton and Grace finish recapping the 2007 movie, Zodiac, and discuss the facts of the true crime story that the movie is based on.

The movie was directed by David Fincher and is based on Robert Graysmith’s book, Zodiac. The film stars Jake Gyllenhaal as political cartoonist/sleuth/author Robert Graysmith, Robert Downey Jr. as San Francisco Chronicle reporter Paul Avery, and Mark Ruffalo as San Francisco Police Inspector Dave Toschi. The film focuses on the rise of the Zodiac killer in the San Francisco bay area during the late 1960s and early 1970s and Robert Graysmith’s fascination with solving the mystery of the Zodiac’s identity. Both Fincher and Graysmith had access to actual Zodiac case files in their work and generously provide viewers with accurate reproductions of Zodiac letters and writings throughout the film. Zodiac provides an entertaining and frustrating look into the mystery of the Zodiac killer. Nonetheless, it is important to note that because the movie is based on Robert Graysmith’s book, it focuses on the suspects Graysmith was most interested in and is by no means a complete look at all of the Zodiac suspects identified by law enforcement.

In Episode 4, Bolton and Grace recap the 2014 movie, Foxcatcher, and discuss the facts of the true crime story that the movie is based on.

The movie was directed and produced by Bennett Miller. The film stars Channing Tatum and Mark Ruffalo as wrestling phenoms and brothers - Mark and Dave Schultz. Steve Carell plays the role of wealthy wrestling enthusiast/ convicted murderer, John E. du Pont. The film mostly focuses on the relationship between Mark and Dupont before ultimately revealing the murder of Dave Schultz. The movie made some rather large changes to the timeline of real-life events, but nonetheless Foxcatcher takes viewers on an entertaining and uncomfortable ride.

play

07/07/21 • 131 min

In Episode 10, Bolton and Grace recap the 2017 film, Molly’s Game, and discuss the facts of the true crime story that the movie is based on.

The movie was written and directed by Aaron Sorkin and is based on the 2014 memoir of the same name written by Molly Bloom. The film stars Jessica Chastain as Molly Bloom, a former world-class skier and aspiring law student, who found herself running a star studded high stakes poker game. Kevin Costner plays Molly’s demanding father, Michael Cera plays the infamously repugnant ‘Player X’, and Idris Elba plays Molly’s lawyer who she hires after she is named in a Federal mob indictment. The film focuses on the life of Molly Bloom, how she came to run such a high-stakes poker game, why she ends up in Federal Court and perhaps why she received the sentence she did. The film is a nice break (for the most part) from violent crime stories and immerses viewers into the world of high-stakes private poker.

Between October 2008 through November 2009, several celebrities living around Hollywood, California were burglarized. Most people were shocked to find out the burglars were teenagers/young adults from a nearby wealthy neighborhood. Nancy Jo Sales covered the story in her March 2010 Vanity Fair article, "The Suspects Wore Louboutins." In writing this article, Sales spoke at length to some of the young suspects, as well as the lead investigator on the case. This article serves as the basis for the 2013 movie, The Bling Ring, directed by Sofia Coppola.
