Crime Family - S03E15: THE DISAPPEARANCE OF TERA SMITH
play

06/15/22 • 33 min

Tera Smith was a typical teenager living in Redding, California in 1998. One August night, she went for a short jog before a scheduled shift at the family-run business but she never showed up for her shift, and was never seen again. Instantly, her family and local authorities swung into action in hopes of finding the 16-year-old.
The only leads that surface point to Troy Zink- Tera's taekwondo instructor whom it's believed she was having an inappropriate relationship with. As the police (and Tera's family) focus in on Troy, information about his past comes to light which leads to more suspicion but the mystery surrounding her disappearance still remains today.
If you have any information about Tera's disappearance, please call the Shasta County Sheriff's Office at 530-245-6135. Or, Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (1-800-222-8477).

In September 1992, 20-year-old Acadia University student Kenley Matheson vanished without a trace. Only two weeks into his first semester, Kenley's new friend Tom Gordon spots Kenley walking on the streets of Wolfville, Nova Scotia the evening of September 21 for the final time. What happened after this alleged sighting has been a mystery for over thirty years. In the time since Kenley went missing, several theories have emerged (some plausible and others shocking).
In the second part of our season four finale, we discuss the theory that Kenley had been murdered by a fellow Acadia student in 1992 when a family comes forward with what seems like promising information. Multiple theories are uncovered about where Kenley's remains can be found. Will Kenley's family finally have answers?

In the fourth and final part of our Meredith Kercher murder case coverage, we dive deeper into the manipulation both of and by the media to portray Amanda Knox as the ultimate villain in Meredith's murder and the implications this negative portrayal had on Amanda both during the ordeal and after the final verdicts.
Additionally, we discuss the aftermath of the trauma on all parties involved, where they are today and how this case should be a lesson in the dangerous consequences of tunnel vision, shoddy police work, and the media's ultimate power to influence the masses in high-profile cases.

Crime Family - S02E10: THE HIGHWAY OF TEARS (#MMIWG, PART IV)
play

11/17/21 • 53 min

There are hundreds of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls across Canada, and these are just some of their stories.
In the final part of our Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls miniseries, we discuss the Highway of Tears- a 725-km stretch of highway in British Columbia where dozens of women have gone missing since the 1970's. A vital part of the national conversation about Indigenous issues in Canada, the stories of these missing women have gone largely untold.
In this episode, we discuss how the highway became a playground for evil and how government inaction over the years only perpetuated the issue. We talk about some specific cases of missing and murdered women, how the Indigenous community has rallied to bring justice, and how systemic racism against the Indigenous community has contributed to this massive problem. By telling these stories, we hope to help bring justice to these women and their families- many who have been waiting decades for the pain they've endured in the shadows to be brought to light.

Most true crime fans are familiar with the Adnan Syed case due to the wildly popular podcast "Serial", which covered the case in-depth back in 2014. This case involves the disappearance and murder of 18-year-old high school senior Hae Min Lee in January 1999. We believe that Adnan Syed, the 17-year-old ex-boyfriend of Hae who was convicted of her murder, is completely innocent and has spent the last 22 years wrongly convicted. Join us in part one of this exciting two-part episode as we discuss this frustrating case using shocking details from 'Serial', the follow-up podcast 'Undisclosed', the HBO documentary "The Case Against Adnan Syed" and the book "Adnan's Story: The Search for Truth and Justice After Serial".
Use the hashtag #FreeAdnan to join the fight for justice in this case.

Crime Family - S03E13: THE DEATH OF WARRIENA WRIGHT
play

06/01/22 • 65 min

*This episode contains audio footage that may be triggering to hear. Please use discretion when listening to this episode*
In the early morning hours of August 8, 2014, 26-year-old Warriena Wright falls to her death from a balcony 14 floors above the ground. Immediately, questions about what happened to her abound. Only days later, 28-year-old Gable Tostee is arrested for her murder and as it turns out, the answers to what happened that night lie on a three-hour-long audio tape recorded by Gable himself. Igniting a high-profile trial, the argument of whether Gable could be held responsible for her death based on the series of events that take place on the tape is at the center of this tragic case.
In this episode, we play crucial parts of that audio tape and outline both the controversy that surrounded Warriena's death and the subsequent trial of Gable Tostee.

Crime Family - S04E08: THE MURDER OF GARNETT SPEARS
play

12/14/22 • 37 min

Garnett Spears was only five-years-old when he dies in hospital after years of health struggles and mysterious illnesses. Upon further investigation, police begin to suspect that his death may actually be murder at the hands of the person he should have been able to trust the most: his own mother.
Lacey Spears had been documenting her son's medical journey through the years, ever since he started experiencing mysterious symptoms just weeks after he was born. Close family and friends begin to grow suspicious of Lacey and her love of all the attention she receives as a result of Garnett's health battles- and the truth that comes to light soon after Garnett's death is sad, unjustifiable and infuriating. This is the story of Lacey Spears (dubbed "Salt Mom" by the media) and how her desperate need for attention and sympathy caused the death of an innocent and helpless child.
