Crest Podcast Ep24 - Pete Jones, Part Two
Crest Surfcast
10/08/20 • 63 min
Last week it was becoming PJ - and now it's about being PJ. Hands up if you remember that surfline! Listen as PJ tells Tom and Rhino how he went about creating his seminal surf report service, about growing the surf shop and brand and about the rest of life's journey to where we are now. This candid discussion includes a haunting account of life-threatening injury, as well as plenty more of Pete's trademark lyrical praise for the sheer joy of surfing as both an action and a way of life. Plus the obligatory debate about the state of modern surfing. Who's his favourite surfer to watch nowadays? You'll never guess it...
This is the finale of Crest's first season. Thanks to each and every listener, and we can't wait to bring back more of the same in Spring 2021.

Crest Podcast Ep17 - Sam Bleakley
Crest Surfcast

With Brilliant Corners, Sam's series of travelogues from the world's less visited surf destinations, now available on WSL Studios, this former European champ is well placed to lead a new wave of surf exploration. Listen to him as he tells Tom and Rob about some of the places he's visited, his inspirations, travel companions and philosophies. We also learn a few tricks of the WSL commentary trade from an insider's perspective, and about what exactly is needed to get a PhD in surf travel writing.

We formed this podcast to chat with legends, and here they are! To celebrate the WSF turning 50 this year, Crest has pulled together quite a guest list. Mark Vaughan and James Jones have joined Tom and Rob on the couch, alongside none other than Linda Sharp and Herbi aka Huw John. These guys pretty much are the WSF over the past few decades, and once again, Linda's encyclopedic knowledge of Welsh, European and World surf culture is as expansive as it gets. Flanked by the storytelling of Herbi, it's quite an experience to chat to the pair together. When we did a Surveymonkey of who'd you'd most like to hear from back in 2020, Herbi was one of the most suggested names. So, here it is. You want legends... We give you legends...

Crest Podcast Ep26 - Luke Cromwell
Crest Surfcast
03/15/21 • 44 min
We all gazed longingly at the images shared by 'Photo Boss Bali' last year, but what are the actual stories behind them? What was it like to shoot Kelly Slater at Padang-Padang, to stare at empty Sumatran perfection as the rest of the travellers went home? Originally from Pembrokeshire, the tale of how Luke Cromwell came to be a resident of the world's most surf-rich nation is one of adventure, ambition, luck, dreaming - and of course hardship. For the debut to Season 2, Luke tells Tom and Rob about life in the archipelago, its surfers and spots, the mad year that was 2020, and what he misses about home.

We've been huge fans of Adz Lison's The Grumpy Surfer Podcast since it's debut moment, so we simply had to do a crossover episode with him. And why not make it a triple? Also joining us, therefore, for this special, are the 'Pagans', Pat Langdon-Dark, Callum Thomas and Logan Nicol. In this three-way edition, Tom, Rhino and our TGSP/Pagans counterparts embark on a review of the 2021 international pro surfing season, followed by a pertinent discussion about what an up-and-coming surfer from the British Isles might need to do if they want to get to the next stage. Given the Pagans are there or thereabouts themselves, and that Adz has a rare ability to get people talking about things they didn't even know about themselves, the result is an incredible insight into what makes the talented trio tick. Thanks again, Adz, for journeying over the Severn Bridge, and we look forward to welcoming you on the show again in 2022 for a life-story episode. In the meantime, enjoy this fun hour of chat with a great bunch of characters...

Crest Podcast Ep27 - Jenny Jones
Crest Surfcast
03/29/21 • 79 min
Has any single person made a bigger difference for British board sports than Olympic snowboard medallist Jenny Jones? Arguably, her contribution to slopestyle's debut at the Sochi 2014 games was one of the most significant catalysts in spreading the popularity of surfing's mind-boggling sister discipline. As our beloved sport approaches its own date with Olympic destiny later this summer, what can our riders expect, and what of the jocks v purists dilemma? As an absolute ripper on the water too, and an ambassador for Bristol's The Wave, Jenny is uniquely placed to have a say on such things. Beyond that, though, it is the sheer stoke of Tom and Rhino's conversation with Jenny here that makes it a must-listen. A pure frother with a love of travel - including mishap, of course - and a passion for all things surf, Jenny's ocean story is every bit as enthralling as the chalet-hand to medal-winner tale we all know so well.

Crest Podcast Ep28 - Jem Evans on Tom Curren
Crest Surfcast
04/12/21 • 88 min
Who could forget that little nugget last season when Rhino told us Tom Curren had written a song about him? Well, the central part of that incredible story belonged to former Welsh Seniors Champ Jem Evans, who would go on to host Curren at his Bourdaines home for three consecutive summers. What were the circumstances that led to a Gower and Porthcawl ripper suddenly sharing his every surf with one of the world's most famous surfers? And what is it like to spend so much time in the company of surfing's great enigma? Jem shares his remarkable insight with Tom and Rhino here, as well as offering some amazing analysis of Curren's surfing approaches and style - a wave-riding repertoire unmatched to this day for its flair and aesthetic. This is one of Wales' great storytellers, sharing one of Welsh surfing's great tales!

Crest Podcast Ep38 - Greg Owen, Part Two
Crest Surfcast
09/20/21 • 68 min
One of the landmark interviews the team have done to date sees its concluding part here, with Greg delivering more of his masterclass on what he thinks makes good surfing. Stand by for Vaughanie to challenge him on some of these points, before fond reminiscence from Greg about being among the first travellers to surf Cloudbreak as non-Tavarua residents, and getting ridiculously tubed at the world-famous reef pass. More fond tales of dream sessions on UK shores follow - before some banter as Tom and Vaughanie remind Greg about the legendary phone pranks he's been caught by over the years. Will Vaunt get the better of him one last time, or is Greg wise to such shenanigans nowadays? To finish this amazing life story double, one of Wales' finest voices has both some wise words for us... and of course one of his trademark awful jokes. We wish this one had been ten hours long, not one!

Crest Podcast Ep37 - Greg Owen, Part One
Crest Surfcast
09/05/21 • 59 min
The one the people wanted! If you've ever had anything to do with Greg, you'll know what to expect here. One of these shores' finest ever surfers is also one of our most colossal characters. Of course it was only a matter of time before we hit Greg up for his life story, and as with some of our other legends, it's just too much for one episode alone. In this first instalment, Tom is joined by Mark Vaughan and the pair walk Greg through his early years, from being paid to 'go down the hyrdro-slide at Coney to make it look busy', through to running No Limit Wetsuits and gathering a slew of national and international titles. This journey, naturally, was via some hilarious mishaps - such as the infamous time one of HM Constabulary was minded to swim into the lineup at the Esp to stop him breaking a little known by-law. As Tom puts it, 'listening to Vaunt and Greg bounce off each other is one of the finest experiences', and now here it is for your patient ears! Enjoy. (Part Two to follow in a fortnight.)

Crest Podcast Ep32 - Linda Sharp, Part One
Crest Surfcast
06/07/21 • 47 min
The most influential female surfer in British history! For this special occasion (and thanks to the wizardry of Martin John) we’re on video again, as Tom and Rhino catch up with the icon that is Linda Sharp. In this first part of her amazing life story, we hear Linda’s thoughts on the ISA Worlds across the decades, as well as the origins and foundation tale of the Welsh Surfing Federation - an organisation Linda has spent four decades in service to. From a life of travel, which of the many places stands out? In 2021, is it any surprise she chooses to talk with nostalgic longing about the land that will see the sport’s Olympic debut? Part Two will follow on June 21st.
