The Craving Creativity Podcast is our cry for help, a way to help ourselves as creatives to talk about how we get inspired, how we create but also how we deal with stress, mental illness and everything in between.

When you are a creative, it has always been hard to fit into a “normal” life with 9-5, career plans and dreams of a wonderful retirement. If you are a true creative then all you want to do is create.

If you are a creative you are most likely seen as the black sheep of the family, making different choices than 95% of “normal” people would do. Not going for the safe choice but always living a little on the edge

Throw in a pandemic and confine us in our homes during multiple lockdowns, with no creative outlets in the form of galleries, theaters, cinemas, music venues and creatives will have a much harder time adjusting than the regular Joe.

With the Craving Creativity Podcast it is our hope to create a safe place where we can talk about being creative. We want to build a community of like minded creatives and help each other. Subscribe, email us [email protected] and be part of the creative journey.

In our first episode, we talk about how rules can set you free. This may sound counterproductive, but Danish filmmaker and provocateur Lars von Trier proved that you can become more creative by restricting yourself. In 1995, Dogme95 was created by fellow Danish filmmakers Lars von Trier, Thomas Vinterberg, Søren Kragh-Jacobsen, and Kristian Levring to limit themselves on a film production.

Some of the rules were:

  • The camera must be handheld.
  • Actors have to wear their own clothes.
  • Filming must be done on location.

By using the strict 10 rules the directors could concentrate more on the actors and the film and not wait for technical departments like camera, lighting and wardrobe.

In this episode, we talk about how creatives are often misjudged, mislabeled, and mishandled by the traditional school system. We talk about not fitting into boxes and being labeled by your latest test score. Does a test score really represent who you are, your values, and your beliefs? If you don't fit into the traditional school system and you score low, does that make you feel less smart?

Should you accept the rules, status quo, and conventional wisdom that society gives us?

In episode 5 we talk about how to manage stress. Thomas easily gets stressed while Zane absorbs stress. Meditation, breathing techniques, music and good long walks might be the solution. We discuss how stress affects our work and how we deal with family, people and our focus.

Most importantly we take action in order to remove the stress.

Episode 6 - Crazy Creative

In today's episode, we talk about Mental Illness. Co-host Zane shares that he has been diagnosed with Insomniac, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Anxiety, and Depression and how that affects his workflow, creativity, and life.

Are there more people with mental illness in the creative arts? Do creative arts cause mental illness or if you have a mental illness are you more drawn to creative arts?

Quote from Lord Byron

“We of the craft are all crazy, some are affected by gayety, others by melancholia. But all are more and less touched”

Should we talk openly about our mental illnesses or should we try to hide them?

Storytelling has been essential for human survival. Before humans could read and write we relied on oral storytelling to pass down vital information from one generation to the next generation. These berries will kill you, but these berries will nourish you. We are hardwired to listen to stories.

We tell each other stories externally but also internally. "The quality of your life is in direct proportion to the story you tell yourself"

Editing is about refining, chipping away, honing in, changing, and adapting your creative work. Editing is part of the creative process and we need to talk about how important it is as a creative. But when do you know it is ready?

Quote:

"To me, the single biggest mark of the amateur writer is a sense of hurry. Hurry to finish a manuscript, hurry to edit it, hurry to publish it. It's definitely possible to write a book in a month, leave it unedited, and watch it go off into the world and be declared a masterpiece. It happens every fifty years or so. For the rest of us, the single greatest ally we have is time. There's no page of prose in existence that its author can't improve after it's been in a drawer for a week. The same is true on the macro-level – every time I finish a story or a book, I try to put it away and forget it for as long as I can. When I return, its problems are often so obvious and easy to fix that I'm amazed I ever struggled with them. Amateur writers are usually desperate to be published, as soon as possible. And I understand that feeling – you just want it to start, your career, your next book, whatever. But I wonder how many self-published novels might have had a chance at getting bought, and finding more readers if their authors had a bit more patience with them?" -

Charles Finch (The Vanishing Man, The Last Enchantments)

In today's episode, we talk about creative works and if they capture the zeitgeist and if they can stand the test of time. Just completing a creative work is a major accomplishment, but then it has to "compete" against similar works in the same time period.
