Alexis is a craftsperson and woodworker that is currently running a local maker space, Protohaven, in the Pittsburgh area. Alexis has always been creative and went to college for industrial design. After college she had the amazing opportunity to work as a designer at George Nakashima Woodworkers which really cementer her love of the craft and the materials that are a part of furniture. Her dream is to design furniture, specifically chairs, that are specific to the individual she is making them for.

Prior to beginning training as a violin maker in 2017 at Merton College (London), Emma worked as a book cover designer and typesetter where she learned the joy of small details which has translated into her approach to violin making.

During much of her training as a violin maker she worked part time as the manager for Les Aldrich Music, where she developed a particular interest in violins for children and adult learners, wishing to provide access to instruments for players from a wide variety of backgrounds.

Emma even plays violin herself as she has found being able to fully appreciate the art and sound of playing a violin aides her ability to make a high quality violin.

Katie Thompson is an independent artist, author, creative consultant and speaker based outside of Charleston, SC. She is a disabled mother of two, and wife. She lives and works out of her home and shop in the swamps of the Lowcountry.

Katie has a passion for people and sharing their stories, and pursues her inclinations as a storyteller through her writing. Her ongoing project the Women of Woodworking series features some of the craft’s most talented artisans from around the globe. Her children’s book Little Beaver Builds a Bed was published in 2016.

She got into woodworking because she needed a piece of furniture for her entryway where she can drop her stuff off at the end of a long day of work. She still has that first table in her home and it serves as a reminder of just how far her skills have come since then.
