Complicated Fatherhood Episode 1: The Eighth Of Whom Was My Father
Courtside Forever
11/30/20 • 62 min
In the first episode of Complicated Fatherhood, Ryan details the events that led him to create this podcast, describing how the loss of his Grandparents and his desire to further understand his family lineage has affected his journey through fatherhood. During the research of this podcast, Ryan discovered his southern family ties and how the brutal lynchings and atmosphere of the Jim Crow south caused a migration of African Americans from Shabuta, MS to Albany, NY.
In their first of eight conversations, Ryan asks his biological father, Maurice, about his childhood, his upbringing, his siblings, and about how his father affected his life and fatherhood. For the first time, Ryan learns about his paternal Grandfather and begins to understand how family of origin has affected his own fatherhood, for better or for worse.

In this episode of Courtside Forever, we dive into the thought-provoking story of Rudy Gobert, 4x NBA Defensive Player of the Year, who faced an extraordinary decision during the 2024 NBA playoffs. As the Minnesota Timberwolves competed in a pivotal playoff series, Gobert chose to miss Game 2 to witness the birth of his first child. His decision sparked widespread debate about the intersection of professional commitments, family priorities, and societal expectations of fatherhood.
Gobert’s story is not just about basketball—it’s a lens into a broader conversation on paternity leave and the evolving role of fathers in the modern era. Despite the overwhelming support from his team, Gobert faced criticism from some voices in the sports world, including former All-NBA guard Gilbert Arenas, who questioned his decision to prioritize family over a playoff game. Arenas’s comments, along with those of others, reveal a lingering cultural tension: should men sacrifice professional duties for personal milestones, and is it acceptable to put family first, even on the biggest stages?
This episode explores these pressing questions and more. Using Gobert’s story as a springboard, we examine the challenges and opportunities surrounding paternity leave in the United States. From navigating outdated societal norms to dealing with limited workplace support, we highlight the hurdles that many fathers face when trying to be more present for their families. Host Ryan Rucker shares personal anecdotes about his own paternity leave experiences, shedding light on the stark differences between workplaces that support family needs and those that fall short.
We also delve into the benefits of paternity leave for families and children, backed by statistics and compelling studies. Did you know that fathers who take just two weeks of leave are more likely to actively engage in early childcare tasks and build stronger bonds with their children? These moments are about more than just time off—they’re about setting a foundation for family success and challenging outdated notions of masculinity that prioritize work above all else.
But this episode isn’t just about advocacy; it’s also packed with actionable advice. Ryan provides tips for fathers considering paternity leave, from researching its benefits and navigating workplace policies to having meaningful conversations with partners and advocating for better family-friendly practices.
As we wrap up, Ryan leaves listeners with a powerful reminder: work is temporary, but family is forever. Paternity leave isn’t just a perk—it’s an investment in the people who matter most.
Join us for this inspiring, thought-provoking episode of Courtside Forever as we celebrate dads, redefine priorities, and champion the idea that the best seats in the house are the ones where we show up for our families.

In Episode 3 of Courtside Forever, host Ryan Rucker dives deep into a growing crisis that impacts us all: the mental health and well-being of parents. Inspired by the U.S. Surgeon General’s 2024 advisory, Parents Under Pressure, this episode explores the immense challenges modern parents face in balancing work, caregiving, and societal expectations.
Ryan begins by sharing personal stories and statistics that highlight the staggering pressures parents endure today—pressures that are amplified by rising costs, demanding work schedules, and a lack of genuine community support. Drawing on the advisory’s findings, he dissects the link between parental stress and mental health, emphasizing how unchecked stress can ripple into every aspect of family life, from strained relationships to children’s long-term well-being.
Listeners will hear about the personal struggles Ryan faced as a working dad, including battling paternal postpartum depression and navigating unsympathetic work environments. Through these stories, Ryan underscores the importance of acknowledging and addressing mental health issues in parents—not just for their benefit but for the stability and success of future generations.
This episode doesn’t stop at identifying the problems. Ryan shares actionable solutions, both individual and societal, to improve parenting in America. From advocating for paid family leave and flexible work policies to building supportive communities, he challenges listeners to rethink how society values caregivers. Ryan also offers practical tips for parents to nurture their mental health, connect with others, and find small but meaningful ways to care for themselves.
Through empathy, humor, and honesty, Ryan reminds parents that their struggles are valid and their work is sacred. Courtside Forever champions the idea that parenting is the most important job we’ll ever have—and that supporting parents today is the key to building a better tomorrow.

What makes someone at the top of their game walk away? In this episode, we unpack the surprising retirement of Adrian Wojnarowski—better known as “Woj”—the most trusted NBA insider and the man behind some of the league’s biggest breaking news.
After a 30+ year career and a $20M ESPN contract, Woj made the bold decision to step away from the spotlight, leaving behind a career defined by relentless hustle, sleepless nights, and an unmatched ability to deliver the news first.
But why did Woj choose to retire at the peak of his career? We explore how a diagnosis of prostate cancer, the death of a colleague, and the constant pressures of the 24/7 news cycle led him to rethink everything.
Woj’s story isn’t just about leaving ESPN—it’s about reclaiming his time, prioritizing his family, and finding joy in life beyond work as he transitions to his new role at St. Bonaventure University.
This episode isn’t just for NBA fans—it’s for anyone who’s felt the weight of burnout, struggled with balancing work and family, or questioned what success truly means. Episode 16 | Dads, Please Keep Your Personal Pursuits
Courtside Forever
02/25/25 • 13 min
"Say goodbye to the next 18 years of your life!"
That was one of the first things someone said to me when I told them my wife and I were expecting our first child. And while I laughed it off, the more I thought about it, the more I realized how messed up that mindset is.
Because here’s the truth—becoming a dad will absolutely change your life. But it won’t ruin it. If anything, it’ll make your life more meaningful, more exciting, and more fulfilling than you ever thought possible.
I’ve always been someone with passions. I love basketball, I love writing, I love creating. And when my first daughter was born, I started hearing all the warnings:
"You won’t have time for that anymore."
"Your hobbies are gonna take a backseat."
"You better get your fun in now before the baby comes."
But here I am, years later, still doing the things I love—just differently. I learned how to adapt my hobbies instead of abandoning them, how to communicate better with my wife, and how to reject the idea that being a dad means losing myself.
And that’s what we’re talking about in today’s episode of Courtside Forever.
Here’s what I’m diving into:
✔️ The "Negative Ned" mentality and why so many men think fatherhood is the end of their personal freedom
✔️ How I found ways to keep my passions alive while being an engaged, present dad
✔️ The power of communication and planning (aka, how not to be an idiot)
✔️ Why resentment happens when dads don’t carve out time for themselves—and how to avoid it
✔️ Actionable steps you can take to balance fatherhood and self-care
Fatherhood isn’t about giving up who you are—it’s about evolving into the best version of yourself. Yeah, my life looks different now. I don’t have endless free time. I don’t spend entire weekends on the couch playing 2K. But you know what? I wouldn’t trade what I have now for anything.
So if you’re a new dad, an expecting dad, or even just a guy wondering if he’ll ever get to do the things he loves again—this episode is for you.
Let’s talk about it—because as parents, we’ve got the best seats in the house - let's enjoy them.

Episode 12 | Parenting in Unprecedented Times
Courtside Forever
01/28/25 • 14 min
Our kids are waiting for us to build them a better world. Can we? This is a question I asked on July 17, 2024, following the assassination attempt on then-candidate and current President Trump. As millennial parents, we are raising kids during one unprecedented event after another. I don't know about you, but I am tired, and after the past week, I'm even more tired.
This isn't a political podcast, though I am a political person, so while there is no apology coming, this is a heads up, and if you choose to listen, you'll likely find that I'm pretty measured in my feelings. I want Courtside Forever to be for all parents, but as a dad who preaches empathy, honesty, authenticity, and community, the foundation of my work is in stark contrast to the bullying behavior that's become more and more prevalent in the current administration. My philosophy is that everyone is welcome, but not everything is tolerated.
On today's podcast, I read my July 17, 2024, piece titled Parenting in Unprecedented Times. It was originally published in the A Parent Is Born publication on Medium. In it, I make my case as to why parents need to lean into being fully present for our families like never before.
The pace of current events is designed to be fast and confusing and leave the general public feeling so overwhelmed that we have nothing but apathy to give. But as I held my baby girls for the first time, I promised to do my best to build a world they could be proud of, and as long as I’ve got breath in my body, I’m going to try.

Episode 18 | With Love, Ryan
Courtside Forever
03/11/25 • 14 min
On this episode of Courtside Forever, we’re talking about joy—the kind of joy that shouldn’t be controversial but somehow still is.
I recently watched With Love, Meghan, the new Netflix show featuring Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, as she hosts friends, cooks, and gardens in Montecito. It’s the kind of peaceful, feel-good lifestyle show we’ve seen for years with Martha Stewart, Rachael Ray, and Joanna Gaines. And yet, the backlash Meghan has received? It’s different. It’s louder. And let’s be honest—it’s rooted in something deeper.
This episode dives into why the internet seems to hate joy, how Black women—especially Black moms—are scrutinized for simply existing in peace, and why we struggle to let people enjoy life without attaching some grander meaning to it.
We’ll talk about the viral tweet from a woman who dared to enjoy morning coffee with her husband in their garden—and the absurd backlash that followed. We’ll explore the internet’s pattern of building people up just to tear them down, from everyday folks like Daisey and Michael the Librarian to someone as high-profile as Meghan Markle. And we’ll ask the real question: Why do people love wealth and celebrity culture until the person enjoying it is a Black woman?
But most importantly, this episode is about reclaiming joy. Whether it's making ice cream, watching a cozy cooking show, or tending to an arugula garden, we all deserve simple pleasures—without the internet ruining them.
So, what’s something small and joyful in your life that you refuse to let the internet take from you? Let’s talk about it.
