Today on the podcast we welcome Stephanie Cowie. Throughout Stephanie’s professional life she was a Vice President at American Benefits Consulting and she also served as a Senior Employee Benefits Consultant for Fortune 50 & 100 companies in the U.S. for the past 22 years. Today on Courageous Wellness, she shares with us a more personal story -- of suffering a stroke in her spinal cord, prior to her 50th birthday. This spinal cord injury created paralysis for Stephanie from the waist down.

By sharing her very courageous story with us, we dive into Stephanie’s experience from being a temporarily abled body person to a person living with a disability. She not only shares with us concepts and language that are important to be aware of for individuals living with disabilities but also that we are all only ever having an experience of being temporarily abled.

Stephanie shares the ups and downs of navigating a new normal and inspires us with her intelligence and sense of humor surrounding how she navigates experiencing physical paralysis.

She remains an incredibly active and dedicated member of her community as the Co-President of the PTA at Greenwich High School, Vice-Chair to the First Selectman Advisory Counsel for People with Disabilities and has previously held a long list of leadership positions including the United Way of Greenwich and the Junior League.

Stephanie lives in Greenwich, CT with her husband Jim, their son Sean, and their English Golden Retriever Walter. Her interests include golf, spending time with family & friends, singing, playing basketball with her son, travel and volunteerism. We learned so much from Steph’s experience and are grateful to her for sharing her courageous wellness with us today.

Today on the podcast we welcome Richa Gupta, founder of both, Good Food for Good, and Turmeric Teas! Growing up in India, Richa was used to eating fresh home cooked food, but as a marketing executive and mom, she found it challenging to find prepared shortcuts that met her expectations in terms of ingredients and taste. She grew frustrated with all the compromises she was expected to make for convenience.

Driven to make a difference through food, Richa launched Good Food for Good in late 2013. This was also how she found her true purpose, which she explains in this episode. She started Good Food For Good with a Buy One, Feed One Model and has proudly fed over 225,000 people to date and made a positive difference by donating over 225,000 meals.

Richa’s ardent belief in the power of real whole food and love for cooking delicious food made it easy for her to develop products -- loaded with nutrients, whole foods, and a delightful flavour making it easy for people to live healthier lives. She is actively working on reaching her goal of feeding 1 Million people by the end of 2020! Good Food for Good is a certified B Corps, and all products are made with organic ingredients free of gluten, soy, corn, refined sugars, and preservatives.

Similarly, her other company, Turmeric Teas is also certified organic and also supports the Buy One, Feed One Program. The mission of Turmeric Teas is to make it easy for everyone to enjoy the healing benefits of Turmeric. Drawing on the wisdom of Ayurveda, Turmeric Teas is inspired by the rhythms of nature and the therapeutic gifts of the extraordinary root which has been a fixture in Indian cooking. On this episode we really dive into the importance of ingredients, falling back in love with preparing your own food, getting back to the basics with food and nutrition, inflammation, and so much more. We really loved this conversation, and hope you enjoy the episode.

Today on the podcast we sit down with PLATEFIT creator and founder, Rachael Blumberg. On this episode we discuss Rachael’s inspiring journey in fitness, entrepreneurship, and the incredible technology of the medical grade vibrating plates that are used in the 27-minute PlateFit classes!

PLATEFIT classes are taken on medical grade devices that utilize rapid harmonic vibration — a unique means of destabilizing the body. This destabilization forces reflexive, subconscious neuromuscular action, in both muscular and connective tissue, in order to re-balance the body and maintain stability. The plates are always moving three directions at once: left to right, front to back, up and down. The vibration activates your muscle reflexes, and during the workout classes, muscles are contracting 30 to 50 times per second — roughly 900 – 1,500 contractions every 30 seconds

The benefits of the class include: increased muscle toning, serotonin, bone density, endurance, increased metabolism, lymphatic drainage and blood flow, and a decrease in cortisol levels, among many others. We are huge fans of PLATEFIT, which is fun, challenging, and allows you to break a sweat in just 27 minutes.

Rachael is widely regarded as one of the most innovative and knowledgeable Power Plate® instructors in the industry and her mission is to help individuals achieve their goals, while feeling good in their bodies and in their lives. We loved this conversation with Rachael, learned so much about the power plate technology, the ups and downs of entrepreneurship, and why you should never be deterred by "no!"

To learn more or sign up for a class you can visit: https://platefit.co You can also follow PLATEFIT and Rachael on instagram at: @platefit + @rachaelblumberg

This week on the podcast we welcome Dr. Diva Nagula, author, physician, and stage IV non-Hodgkins lymphoma survivor. On this episode he shares his remarkable non-traditional battle with cancer and share tips and ideas about how we can take a more functional and integrative approach to our own health before facing health battles. In his new book FROM DOCTOR TO PATIENT: Healing Cancer through Mind, Body, and Spirit, Dr. Nagula tells readers about the diagnosis that compelled him to take a hard look at his own life and choices – all the way back to a very young age – and the long journey to not only beating cancer but reinventing himself and his relationship to the people, work, and the world around him...for the better. The book chronicles the decisive and winning course of treatment he followed that blended Functional Medicine and traditional Western therapies and it includes "Medical Crash Courses" that inform readers about everything from the risks of inflammation to the power of psychedelics — which we also discuss on this episode. We gained a lot from this conversation and we hope you enjoy! To learn more you can visit: https://fromdoctortopatient.com

On today’s episode of Courageous Wellness, we have an incredible conversation with Dr. Que Collins, principal scientist of Deuterium Depletion Therapies and the co-founder and principal investigator, at Cignature Health Metabolic Clinic – the first clinic in the world to use deuterium and tracer technologies to describe and follow the health status of patients with metabolic disorders such as cancer, diabetes, and autoimmune disorders.

Now, if you are wondering what deuterium depletion is -- don’t worry, we had no idea either, before this conversation and our minds have been blown. Deuterium depletion is so crucial to our overall health and in this episode, Dr. Collins breaks down why we all need to be aware of this in order to prevent major diseases.

Dr. Collins shares his own personal journey and his background in cancer research, shares with us about facing the devastation of cancer in his immediate family, breaks down the science of deuterium, and enlightens us on eating for optimal health. Spoiler: Dr Collins is not dogmatic about defining or labeling what diet you follow as long as it depletes deuterium, and we don’t think listeners of this podcast will be surprised to learn what kind of diet that is. We learned so much from Dr. Collins and can’t wait for you to hear this episode.

To get in touch with Dr. Collins you can visit: https://www.ddcenters.com and follow on instagram at @ddcenters
