Owning a vintage shop is hard, but in the year 2023 it's even harder!
In today's episode, we'll be talking about what the hell happened this year and what we're going to do about it in 2024.
We did things a little differently this year and had to say goodbye to what we're expected to do as a micro-business.

Just imagine you're a vendor at a market selling vintage clothing.
To get to this market you had to hunt for the inventory, buy supplies and possibly even travel to be a vendor.
Now imagine a celebrity in the music and fashion world comes to this market to find "inspiration" for their next collection.
This would be a very exciting thing for any seller to have a celebrity with fashion influence shop your booth!
What if that celebrity went into your booth, studied, photographed, analyzed a garment you're selling for a half hour to 45 minutes?
What if in that time someone would've bought it, but didn't because this celebrity has a hold on it?
What if that celebrity then put the items back and left without purchasing anything from your booth, but obtained valuable resources from you for free?
In today's episode, we'll chat about how for some vendors, in London, this became a reality.

IS FASHION ART?
What's your immediate response and why?
In today's episode, I'll be discussing the two sides of whether fashion is art or just a way to make money.
Trust me when I say that this topic can get pretty heated from those I talk to on both sides!

What's something that everyone who starts a business has in common?
Receiving BAD ADVICE!
Since I started my adventure is opening a vintage shop way back in 2018, I've received my fair share of bad advice from other small business owners, big business owners and those who mean well.
I've picked out three of the worst pieces of advice I've received and I'll tell you why it's BAD!
I'll also be giving a little shop update as well as what movies I'm watching that I think you should give a try!

Conversations In a Vintage Shop - #23- BODY IMAGE & RETAIL: How to Push Back On Arbitrary Body Standards
play

05/09/23 • 48 min

Send us a text

I'm BACK from an unexpected hiatus!
Let me just preface this episode with a HUGE apology!
I had my shop music up louder than I thought, so you will here a lot of background static and noise. The Last Shadow Puppets had me feeling the feels the day I recorded this episode :)
In today's episode, I'm going back to a topic that I will never tire of speaking about and that's fashion and body image.
How has decades of social media and print media eroded many people's sense of body image?
Why are the sizes and numbers used to make us feel excluded from the fashion conversation completely arbitrary?
Let's do a little history dive into why we have "Standard Sizing" and why it's complete bull.
Want to read the article I'll be referencing ahead of time? Here it is below!

Conversations In a Vintage Shop - #22- OH THE DRAMA! Why Is There A Social Media Backlash On Resellers?
play

03/14/23 • 54 min

Send us a text

This week's episode is all about THRIFTING and RESELLING!
Is it ethical? Do resellers of popular platforms like Depop take garments away from low-income families? What's the alternative?
I recently read an article in Buzzfeed News about the backlash a Depop seller is facing on TikTok after posting a thrifting haul for her Depop shop. There have been some very divided and heated opinions!
Want to read the article before you listen to this episode? Find it HERE!
I also went down the Twitter rabbit hole and explored a thread on the ethics of retooling and customizing vintage clothing. Should vintage garments be altered?
Check out the original thread HERE!
Have your own opinions on these topics? Let me know!

I'M BURNED THE F$%& OUT!
When I opened my vintage shop back in 2018 I knew that it was going to be a long and tiring road to get my shop to where I wanted it to go.
Flash forward to 2024 my shop has changed, but the way I interact with it hasn't.
In today's episode, I'll talk about my struggle with burnout after working 6-7 days a week for 5 years, in my vintage shop. The feeling of shame when you have to admit to yourself that you CAN'T do it all and need to step back.
This is a mental health issue that faces so many people across all walks of life and industries!
Listen in to find out what I've done to help preserve my sanity and my business!
